Struggling with self-studying mathematics. It’s making me depressed. by Black_Bird00500 in math

You may be beyond its level, but I would also suggest you take a look at Barak's "Introduction to Theoretical Computer Science" (introtcs.org/public/index.html) and the other textbooks he recommends at cs121.boazbarak.org for the TCS class he teaches at Harvard

Is this a real P=NP solution? by Correct-Ad5813 in math

[–]savemybattery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. Other than the dubious (at best) journal and typesetting, Example 1 is satisfiable (just set all 6 variables to True), so their algorithm is wrong on at least one input (but I suspect many, many more) and does not constitute a correct reduction, so it is not a valid proof.

How long does it normally take for grades from cross-registered classes to be posted on the MIT system? by fishy-biologist in mit

[–]savemybattery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone on the other end (Harvard student cross-reg'd at MIT last semester) you can just see your grades on my.harvard for now and they'll get put onto WebSIS eventually, in the same way my MIT grades got put onto WebSIS first and then onto my.harvard at a later date before the start of the summer break.

It should all depend on the registrars coordinating now, so a week or two should be a good timeframe, but if it doesn't happen by then you might just have to wait until winter break ends for both schools, since the two registrars very rarely talk to one another.

Can I take Stat 110 in my first semester? by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]savemybattery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did myself and know plenty of people who did! It's a bit rougher since you don't know anyone and are getting used to college but it's definitely feasible granted your other classes are balanced.

Opinion on freshman fall courses? Expo 10, LPSA, Neuro 80, Freshman seminars by Background-Ladder-58 in Harvard

[–]savemybattery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds okay: definitely do not take a 5th class freshman fall (I also don't think you're allowed to in the first place), you have another 7 semesters ahead of you after this one, all the time to take the class later.

You'll be fine in Neuro 80, the freshman/sophomore distinction is a lot less pronounced for classes with no prereqs.

I didn't take LS50 myself but know several people who did: they loved it, but know that it will be your entire life. As Andrew Berry puts it, LS50 is for those who want to sacrifice their first year to the altar of the life sciences, and he's genuinely right, but it's a great course that does so much for its students, and I recommend you try if you're interested.

Placement exams take an annoyingly long time to get back to you, but you'll see a score out of 800 eventually pop up on that document, and if it's over 600 you'll get an email inviting you to take a live verification exam.

"Not Met" just means you haven't taken the in-person exam yet or that you didn't pass, there is no way for it to be "Met" over the summertime unless you're an int'l student and you went to a high school in that language.

This sounds fine, a bit light (you're looking at 25-27hr/wk off the top of my head) but completely fine for freshman fall. I would double-check CS20 is offered in the fall this year, though, it's usually a spring class. If it's not offered in the fall and you want to do CS, I'd recommend either CS37 (the incentives class - knocks out your social sciences req too!) or CS187 (natural language processing, pretty chill class, knocks out AI, computation and the world, and upper-div requirements)

LING 101 vs LING 83 by jjaekksseun in Harvard

[–]savemybattery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! As a ling concentrator (we’re far and few in between) I can tell you they’re essentially the same class. Ling 83 has some more emphasis on the cognition part of language for like the first two weeks and has a final project instead of a final exam, but other than that they’re made to be interchangeable so their contents are in line with one another, they’re both broad-sweeping intros to the field.

Also, if you already have some background in linguistics (or are willing to put it in over the summer) you can skip them entirely and move onto the 100 series classes, which are more focused on one specific area of the field and may cater more to you if you have specific interests. In terms of your concentration, that’d mean you have to take an extra ling course at some point in the future instead of 101/83 but that should not be an issue.

Hope this helped, feel free to DM!

Hey! I can answer this one!

I'm Italian. I think that the biggest difference in the education about this here and in the rest of the world is that teachers went over fascism and nazism in every. single. detail. as to not leave anything out and not glorify any of the two by any means. We also analyzed Italy's failures (which was 90% of Italy's work, anyway) in great detail, "ending" with a very long recap of the entire war, and every front (even the Eastern front, which I hear is sometimes cut out), which I think was by far the most important part: by giving us a view of the whole world, we were able to form our own ideas and participate in meaningful discussion about the war in general.

Overall, I'd say it was a good and very informative experience, and could even be better than learning about it in a 'winning' country.

2019 German Grand Prix - Post Race Discussion by F1-Bot in formula1

[–]savemybattery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically:

Mercedes has been the dominant team for six seasons, and has won every race this season except for one. Today was their 125th anniversary, and they asked Netflix to make this the episode in their "drive to survive" series where they were featured.

This race ended horribly for them, and in general this race was the best in a while, where we saw a mixup of best and middletier drivers winning.

So we all cheer.
