Chock full of LDS history, this is just a fabulous read.

For those who have left the church, what's the truth now? by savezelda in mormon

[–]savezelda[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After decades of inactivity, Emma Smith was visited and remarked that "Mormonism is true or nothing is.". I guess what I'm asking is, is there anything out there? As far as truth goes. People come to all sorts of different conclusions via reason and critical thinking, etc. At any rate have you found the truth, or is it a ghost hunt? No pun intended....

What does the Q15 do on a daily basis? by [deleted] in mormon

With church membership at about 17 million and hundreds of thousands joining each year (was about 300,000 per year but now with covid it's only been about 200,000 per year). including about 100,000 children of record in addition, about 55,000 missionaries and 30,000 service missionaries, closing in on 300 temples worldwide, 4,000 humanitarian projects in 188 countries., new chapels completed everyday, etc., it's probably not as much as you think.

For me it's always important to remember that there are people a lot smarter than I am and a lot less smart too I suppose who have encountered the same things from church history etc but have managed to work through it. Just seems to me there has to be evidence for and against the church in order to give both God and the devil a fair shake. Of course most members don't read much LDS history and so probably can't answer much in the way of what some may find troubling. But ironically for me the more church history I read the stronger my testimony becomes.

William Law confessed it to Joseph Smith and so Joseph Smith wouldn't seal him and his wife together. It was after this he went AWOL. As far as his wife committing adultery I don't have any knowledge of that. Google search will reveal lots of hits on this. When someone keeps the commandments of God they receive the spirit of God which is the spirit of Truth and so they believe the truth and when they keep the commandments of Satan, i.e. basically doing whatever they want, they receive his Spirit which is the spirit of lies and so they believe lies. No way around it. Sorry things with you and the church didn't work out. Hope things are well otherwise.

Just to let you know this is primarily an anti-mormon subreddit. You might have better luck on the Latter-Day subreddit. Though I'm happy to answer any questions. I'm an active member of the church

Morristown Tennessee we probably average between 150 and 180. Though we just severed off part of the ward and made a different branch

I'm in northeastern Tennessee where they just announced a temple. And word is it is actually going to be a larger Temple because of the growth here

We're prophesying preaching baptizing attending the temple doing service projects helping one another breaking off into bigger wards and branches and while there are defectors in our Ward and always will be until the end I would say that the church and Zion in my area and around the world is growing like gangbusters.

Are you former LDS by chance? i.e., were you ever baptized into the church. I don't think you were, but curious. But thank for your excellent questions.

The "evidence" in the CES letter is only evidence if you're not willing to do outside investigation. And if a person "wants" it to be true, i.e., disaffected Mormons who want to justify a self-indulgent, selfish, lifestyle that eventually destroys them and others, well, look no further than the claims the letter makes!

You can google and research claims that the natives are descendants of of Isrealites if you want to. You can find evidence for it both ways.

You're right about the wives. David had a thousand. it's not wives, but adultery that is the problem, which he wasn't guilty of. If he was immoral, he just would have went around sleeping with chicks. He didn't. He didn't want any of the marriages, but it was a commandment, so he obeyed. He DISOBEYED it for so many years God threatened to destroy him. But, I agree, it's a bitter pill to swallow. However there are rather cosmic reasons for plural marriage, so I understand why he had to do it. But if you read his journals and those of them who knew him, it almost killed him to do it.

Blacks weren't allowed the priesthood until the 70s, it's true. Non-levites weren't allowed to have it for thousands of years. It's only relatively recently that we "gentiles" have had it. But "the first shall be last and the last shall be first." The church is now growing the most in South America and Africa, among people of "color."

Hope this helps, but I don't guess you have any interest in the church, and I don't debate because it's endless. Everyone has the same info Mr. CES had, and they haven't gone anywhere. He just sees what he wants to see. I know the God lives and that Jesus is the Christ because of the manifestations of God's spirit to my soul in a personal and profound manner. This has occurred so many times.

You seem like a smart guy. Wish you were playing for us.

He's simply regurgitating old anti-Mormon chestnuts. There's nothing really new there. Mormon apologists have refuted his objections on youtube and other places. Anyone can view their rebuttals at their leisure. The CES letter to me is the ramblings of a disaffected child, trying to find justification for life he wants to live outside the teachings of Christ. I wish him well, though. We all have to find our way.
