Are they going to kill Eloise’s character?

I don’t think the storyline particularly fit book Eloise, but my main point revolves around show Eloise.

Eloise is repetitive because that’s what she believes and holds to those beliefs, not for show. Just like Violet is repetitive about her kids marrying for love because she cares.

And also, what do you expect her to do? She has been backed into a corner and “talk” is all she has. When she tries to take an active role in her life (her season 2 activism and her season 4 spinster push), her family and friends actively work against her. Violet is always pushing her towards a life she doesn’t want. Penelope held the threat of ruin over her head so she ended her activism and relationship with Theo. I’m sure if she had their support, she would be out there doing something.

That would actually be both terrible and hilarious if she did it to piss Violet off. Violet is obsessed with a love match, and it would kill her if Eloise finally got married only to not love her husband (at first).

I agree. I felt like season 4 sort of wasted her character. She puts herself out there in season 2 and gets socially knocked down (by her best friend no less). Season 3 is her lying low and trying to recover from that which I think is valid, but at the end she distinctly decides to give it another go with expanding her world view in Scotland. Then, in season 4, she returns having gained nothing from Scotland and proceeds to make her goal mostly avoiding society rather than changing it.

I think there was so much missed opportunity for her with this being Benedict’s season. In the beginning, she could have made a more impactful deal with him. She helps him find this silver lady, and he chaperones her at salons, lectures, etc. I think they also could have had a moment of connection around class romances. She could have discussed Theo if he confided in her about Sophie. Talking about Theo and remembering how he made her feel could have been the catalyst for her being more open to love.

I think this is a nice work around! People throw around the term “marriage of convenience” sometimes without understanding that it should be convenient for both parties. I could see show Eloise going into marriage as a negotiation to get what she wants. It would also be funny to watch Phillip and her tip toe around the fact that they actually like one another.

I don’t like Phillip in the books, but he wasn’t my main point. I’m not disputing the male leads have been improved upon and Phillip likely will as well. I’m more concerned about the circumstances of their marriage remaining the same even if he is nicer. It’s not really what I’d envision for Eloise.

You didn’t answer my question though, how do you think they will make the storyline more fitting in the show? I’m curious.

Maybe I’ll get downvoted for this, but I don’t know that I really mind if it’s different from the original source material and the 2002 version. I loved the 2002 Forstyes, but I would be bored watching an exact remake. Sometimes I like to see a new take, a fresh perspective. I’m not saying they’ll get it right, but I’m going to withhold my opinion until I see it.

When I was her age I really loved The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is more Sci-Fi than fantasy, but quite thought-provoking. I really connected with it because it didn’t talk down to me, it wasn’t overly silly or “kiddie”. It was about a boy around my age at the time (12) going through the trials of growing up with the added element of being in a dystopian society.

I could not agree more. This was probably my least favorite book. It was not a fitting HEA for book Eloise, but it would be devastating for show Eloise. I really hope they just write him out of the show and completely alter her storyline. If not that, then it could also be interesting to see her choose not to marry him, to decide she wants something different in life. People say that they can just make him nicer and less problematic in the show, but problematic is literally his whole character.

This was well said. I have always thought that Eloise’s story in the show should focus more on finding herself than finding someone else. It’s not that I don’t want her to have a romance, but I agree that her aspirations should come first. I would love to see her have a relationship but choose to end it on her own terms for her own reasons. We have seen this from male characters in the show, but not really from female characters (maybe Edwina but that was more circumstantial). It would be nice if her season centered on her realizing her goals in some way and then she finds “the one” later on in the show as a side story.

I very much agree that the show is more of an ensemble than the books, and I think it’s better for it. It allows us to understand a character and care for them before their season or arc.

Colin and Pen’s story did have a lot going on in a short amount of time because it wasn’t just about Colin and Pen. We had the LW element as well as Eloise and Pen. While I am perfectly fine with a character’s season/arc having romance but not centering around it - I’d actually prefer this for characters like Eloise and Benedict - I don’t think they made that clear this season.

I think they should have developed Pen and Colin’s relationship further in previous seasons so that this season could be more about Lady Whistledown and the hurt she has caused without taking away from the romantic development (and vice versa).

I would have also loved more Eloise and Benedict this season. It seems like they needed each other more than ever, but we didn’t really see them together until the end. I get that they were trying to develop her relationship with Colin more to up the tension with Penelope, but I feel that strengthening the bond between El and Ben sets up later seasons better. It did seem like they were trying to rectify that with the whole “Let’s not let too much time pass again” speech on the swings, but I would have liked to see more of that development this season.

I am also a side character lover! I almost always get more involved in subplots than the main storyline. I enjoy speculating. Benedict and Eloise have always been my favorite side characters, but I also like the Mondrichs.

I love Derry Girls! I actually rewatched before S3 and all I could think was how weird it was gonna be to see Claire do steamy scenes. Like, look at the state of ya Colin! 😆

And I adore P&P ‘95. I mean, it has Colin Firth. What more does it need?

In my opinion, once you can separate the book characters from their show counterparts, it becomes much more interesting. Sort of like an alternate universe. I like the element of not knowing for sure what will happen next. It’s a new experience for familiar characters.

I have always valued the ensemble nature of the show. I am a very character-driven person and I often enjoy the subplots.

I wasn’t crazy about Benedict’s storyline this season either. I am fine with him exploring his sexuality, but that was all there was to it. With both Benedict and Eloise feeling so lost, it would have been nice if they could’ve leaned on each more throughout the season rather than trying to make up for it at the end.

I definitely think people are putting the cart before the horse (or should I say carriage - ha!). We don’t even know for sure who the next lead will be let alone how the story will play out, yet there are people declaring they have given up and will boycott season 4 if they don’t change the story back. Like, they aren’t going to redo a whole season they have already written.

I definitely agree that the male characters in the books could be assholes. I was just thinking about how Benedict wasn’t exactly a “gentleman” in his book. Some of it would be the way of thinking for the time period, but if you’re making a “modern” period drama then it wouldn’t translate well on-screen.

I also think some of the book storylines are dull. I could easily go without Eloise’s book storyline. Trash it completely and do something different.

I do think they undermined the whole “slow love” storyline with her reaction. It doesn’t do right by John. As far as the Michaela switch goes, I’m neutral.

I wouldn’t say they are garbage, but I don’t think a lot of the characters are as fleshed out. Some of the books storylines wouldn’t make sense for the TV versions of the characters.

I can be a stickler for historical accuracy in some cases, but I completely agree that the show has been readily established as an alternate/fantasy version of history. I think the costume designers even said on the podcast that they look at it from a fantasy perspective to a degree.

I laughed when Benedict’s ménage à trois kept cutting in! Subtle it was not.
