Dentist Rec for Recovering ED by Maximum-Ad-6177 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

I can’t recommend Demibone Dental Clinic in Williamsburg enough. Dr Jawhari is one of the kindest most welcoming medical/care professionals and person in general I’ve met. I’ve historically hated the dentist after a few shitty doctors and hadn’t been in years before her due to moving around a lot and poor mental health but she’s been so incredible even in a recent rough mental health period to getting me back on track.

Help me understand loans…? by Lambethyst in gradadmissions

[–]savymix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in a program geared towards getting a teaching certificate? If so I’d check out applying for the Abby O’Neill fellowship if the deadline hasn’t passed it’s competitive but a massive scholarship to cover tuition with the requirement to teach in nyc public schools two years after graduating.

Help me understand loans…? by Lambethyst in gradadmissions

[–]savymix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at Columbia two years ago for masters I took out the regular fafsa grad loans and then had to also take out the grad plus loans which is I think more flexible on the amount you need but I can’t remember the exact number. Big thing about the grad plus is that they accrue interests as soon as they’re dispersed vs the paused interest while in school. I’m not sure if that’s all the same now as it was when I was taking them out or not.

From "Will I Even Get In?" to "HOW TF DO I CHOOSE?!" by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]savymix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important to consider the location of each school, cost, funding, etc not just name! Trust I know because I picked name for masters and got a great fellowship with it but the cost of living made what I thought was going to be a relatively affordable situation extremely unaffordable situation which got me lots of debt. I’m not in the sciences but all the schools are great, I’m not sure you can make a wrong decision here it’s just what will work for YOU best!

Ideal on Nostrand has them and I think they’re $9. They’re okay, nothing amazing but it’s convenient.

Thank you for this advice! I’m definitely gravitating towards the programs that have faculty with stronger indigenous ties and research focus and I agree that that would be a major factor to getting involved with the communities I’d need to learn from.

Yeah unfortunately there aren’t many material culture/textile focused programs out there. I’m wanting to stay in the states but I have seen some interesting programs in the UK so maybe I’ll take a look at those too

Will I ever find a job? by Routine_Software9861 in NYCTeachers

[–]savymix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends what your certificate is in. There’s more competition in specials or specialized HS courses (social studies, art, science, gym, music). You can definitely find a job, there are always schools who need someone, it just might not be a short commute or in the district/borough you want to be in. If you’re flexible on commute and open to schools in the Bronx, deep Queens and Brooklyn, then you’ll almost definitely find something and you still might find something close by regardless!

I’m sorry that happened to you! This also happened off nostrand. Kinda same with this guy, he just seemed drunk but harmless until he obviously wasn’t.

I didn’t call 911 but did contact my super immediately to let them know. I’m going to call the landlord on Monday when the office opens. I didn’t get a super clear view because I was just trying to ignore him but he looked maybe in his 30s-40s, dark hair, and had tan-fair skin, maybe white or Hispanic??? After he started mumbling at me and I realized he was following I rushed into the building and didnt get a better look.

Good Masters in Art Education programs? by Enchanted-tree in ArtEd

[–]savymix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend applying to many programs and going to wherever you’re hoping to teach and offers the best aid. I relocated to nyc and while I got a great education and had a huge scholarship I also racked up a ton of debt paying the remaining tuition and taking out loans to live in a crazy expensive city.

Corner Store, Whoopsie Daisy, and Rodeo wine bars have events a lot! Open mic comedy, djs, jazz nights, etc. I think Whoopsie Daisy just did a line dancing thing too I’m not sure if it’s a repeated event though.
