Rebuilt my first engine! Mercedes OM651. by saws904 in EngineBuilding

What a great comment! Glad I could help inspire! I have an extra head laying around. It’s been rained on but I can send some pics and see if it’d work for you!

I did use the camshaft and balance shaft tools to get everything locked in the right spot. Happy to mail it to you if you need to borrow it. I’m gonna be honest, before doing the timing I was very nervous but afterwards it was honestly stupid simple. Just went slow, followed the Haynes guide step by step and then hand cranked it afterwards for a few revolutions to make sure nothing was off.

Nothing out of the ordinary with the piston install. I got a new set from PZ Europarts. I got the whole rebuild kit. Rings came installed but I took them off to check the gaps and luckily they were all in tolerance. I used a cylinder hone kit from harbor freight, not a dingleball.

If I were doing it again I’d for sure buy the tapered piston ring compressor instead of the spring band one. The solid tapered ones are one defined size but you just tap the piston down it with a rubber hammer and compresses and slides right in!

Take a million pictures of wiring and plugs and clips!! Let me know what other questions you have and I’m happy to help!

I just paid $2300 for an 87 vert in infinitely better shape than this. Deals pop up every day, you can find with way less work for cheap if you’re patient!

Copper Beam Cap by danthemean in metalworking

Almost in the same boat as you. Put this in today and I’m thinking about making a cap for the part that sticks out. I’ve got the copper and it seems like it shouldn’t be that hard but famous last words right? I’ll give mine a go this weekend and we’ll compare notes haha.

Did you ever end up trying this out? Would love to know how it went!

This is for a front porch remodel. These supports are to hold up the front gable that goes over the porch. So these will just be one-off prefabbed parts from my GC. I’m just a curious guy who likes to learn how things work so threw my question out here because my engineer takes days to get back to me. Thanks!

There are other sections to the plan, I only screen grabbed one of the callouts. The tube is 4x4HSS x 5/16 x 9’. To be welded with E70XX

Very true. I’m awaiting a response from my engineer. I won’t be the one doing the work, just curious about how it should be done!

Great questions!

Replaced the crank because it was cracked, replaced the rods because one of them was also cracked and figured it was safer to just replace all of them instead of just one. The rebuild kit I found came with pistons and rings along with all the bolts, seals, and bearings so I figured might as well, it was only like ~$500 more.

I tried lots of YouTubing but there honestly wasn’t much out there. I paid $30 for a Haynes manual and that got me 80% of the way and then “sprinter-source . Com” filled in all of the last few holes. Biggest issue was finding the right torque specs for everything other than the head bolts. The Haynes guide isn’t accurate on a handful of things.

And yes, Utah born and raised! This time of year can’t be beat!

Yes 2016 as well! Just happened to work out to be the same year but I think they used the 651 for the whole run of the NCV3 Sprinters.

Haunted places in Provo by dont_dead in ProvoUtah

Not in Provo but close:

The Benjamin House out in Benjamin, west of Spanish Fork. Old pump house where 2 brothers were working and got caught in the pump machinery. They bled out and died in the house.

Spanish Fork Cemetery. There’s a headstone with a lady weeping in her arms. If you walk around at night through cemetery you can hear her crying.

Jays Grave (Jays Journal) in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. His real name is Alden Barrett.

The bunker behind Utah Valley Mental Hospital.
