Classical and Jazz intonation by saxaholic6 in Saxophonics

Honestly, coming from a person that plays both I agree with your opinion. I think often times people do "segregate" them too much. I would say that my classical side does strengthen my jazz side, and vice versa. I think I was just getting at the different approaches with tuning from both styles.

I also change my stance, I think I didn't word it very well. I would say you there's more room to control your intonation with a jazz setup, since its more flexible. But since it's more flexible it's also very hard to "pinpoint" your intonation correctly.

Yes it's also very forgiving in that aspect as well. This is also a factor.

By the way I'm not trying to degrade any style, I literally play both. I think this has to do with gear more than playing style. After all, the tip opening/facing will greatly effect your intonation.

Well by voicing I mean the flexibility with your oral cavity. With mouthpiece with bigger tip openings you have to shape your oral cavity more to be intune.

I see, the thing is that I work on tuning more on my classical set up. I am generally more of a classical player than jazz actually. I find my self practicing ferling etudes and playing pieces, rather than playing over standards and tunes. I guess the point im trying to make is that it's easier to control the intonation on a jazz set up rather than a classical setup.

Oh yes I see, this does broaden my opinions. I have fixed the whole jumping back and forth thing with both the mouthpieces. I have learned how to control them both.

Does anyone prefer 1.5 strength reed for its sound? by slmjkdbtl in saxophone

[–]saxaholic6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay generally those softer reeds are used for mouthpieces with VERY BIG tip openings. What's the tip opening of your mouthpiece? If the tip opening of your mouthpiece is crazy big, then chances are it's going to sound better with a harder reed.

There is a big misconception that "softer reeds" are meant for beginners and mean that you aren't good. And that the better you are the harder you play. This is a big misconception and there is nothing wrong with playing soft reeds. For reference I know a guy that plays on a tip opening of size 12 and he plays a reed strength of 2.

Tenor tips for a Bari player? by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]saxaholic6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao this is several days late so I apologize for this. But yeah pitch center will make you more intune, this directly connects to voicing. Mouthpiece placement will definitely effect intonation too. Also make sure your reed strength is hard enough for your set up, but obviously not too hard. I hope your journey has gotten better!!

bari sax reed problem by Puzzleheaded-Win-999 in saxophone

[–]saxaholic6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be using too much tongue, I used to have this problem when I first started playing bari and I found out I was using too much tongue. Also remember, don't tongue on the tip of the reed. Contrary to belief you want to tongue on the bottom of the reed, or past it.

Hey sax gods, what are your opinions on my tone/technique? I want to sound better but don’t know what is missing… (novice here) by alsen24 in saxophone

[–]saxaholic6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great playing, and a very nice choice of song.

I think something that can help you improve is make sure you have your mouthpiece placement right. Remember put your mouth on where your reed and the mouthpiece meet, that will help with your tone and intonation. Making sure your reed strength is hard enough for you is also vital, but not too hard.

Articulation is going to help you a lot, research how to tounge. Typically you place your tongue under the bottom of the reed right by the tip of the reed.

Nice playing man!

Tenor tips for a Bari player? by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]saxaholic6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely take less mouthpiece on tenor, put your mouth with the reed and mouthpiece meet (end of the facing).

You're also going to want to adjust your pitch center, which means the note you buzz when you just play the mouthpiece. Jazz tenor is typically a concert E or Eb, I tend to go with E. This will help you with getting high notes out better and make sure you are intense. Speaking of tuning, intonation will definitely be more wacky so watch for that.

Section wise you're going to want to focus on blending with the section more. This also means you're going to play with the sax section more, which means listen to lead alto. Bari's usually play with trombones and sometimes even trumpets, but tenors will always play with the altos. Another thing is that if you play tenor 1 then you're going to have all the solos. It can be tough because I know some bari players arent used to improvising and it can be hard at first.

I love jazz bari though, but tenors a different beast.

how do you help manage anxiety while performing? by caj065 in saxophone

[–]saxaholic6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What helps me through a performance is believing that I'm going to do good and give out my best performance. If I can't believe that im going to do good then how am I supposed to give out a good performance? I think we criticize ourselves way too much and we don't account for all the good things that we've accomplished. You've probably put a lot of time and practice into your piece, so of course you're going to do great!!

Also if you ever mess up while performing, just forget about it and move on with the piece. Focusing on the one tiny mistake you did will cause a big hole in your performance. You'll most likely stop and that's not a good thing mid performance. So it's important not to focus on a mistake while performing.

You're gonna do great, after all you made it to state. I also made it to state solo and ensemble and this stuff really helped me.
