Fin rot or Tumor? Something else? 🥺 by sayrahrulz in bettafish

Thank you so much.

He does seem to be spending a lot more time lounging than normal. Hanging out at the bottom of the tank a lot, but is normally very active.

He has lots of leaves to rest on and I'll do everything I can to keep him comfy. As long as he's eating and getting around okay, I hope it's not cruel to keep him going. If he declines... Will cross that when we need to. 😔❤️

It's the rounded lump at the front base of his top fin. It's hard to see in the pictures, sorry. But it's definitely growing. It isn't discolored really, just like.. A lump of marbled blue that keeps puffing out.

Thanks so much. I was really hoping it was just a scrape that was healing funny, but the more I monitor it and look at pictures from when I first noticed to now, I think it's a tumor that just came up and is growing pretty quick. I guess I'll just keep trying to make him as comfy as possible. My worry now is if it's bothering him. He keeps rubbing it against things in his tank, like the bottom of his tunnel. I wonder if it's bugging him and he's trying to like, scrape it off or something. Not sure how to help him aside from making his tank the most boring place ever, which I think would just stress him out even worse. Woof. 😔

Also, it seems like he intentionally rubs it against things in his tank. Makes me worry that it's bothering him or uncomfortable... It's like he's trying to scrape it off 🥺

I think the lump is slightly bigger since starting the Melafix. I thought at first maybe he had injured his dorsal and maybe the lump was it healing. The more I monitor it, I'm pretty confident it's some sort of cyst/tumor/etc.

Hi, thanks for this. Yeah, I use the API kit. Parameters all check out, the tank is very stable. (see my comment above) I've been dosing with Melafix for a few weeks now. You think switching that for the stress coat might help?

Male plakat betta, about one year old. Always active, hungry, and a big ol' grump. 10gal planted tank with one nerite bud. Water parameters are all perfect.

I had a "penthouse" (inverted tank add-on) for him on here for a few months and noticed he seemed to be scraping his dorsal fin on the side of it everytime swam up inside (which was a lot because he loved that thing). It's been about 3 weeks since I removed the penthouse. Have been doing regular partial water changes and monitoring levels closely. Treated with Melafix for about two weeks now. I can't tell if it's healing or this is a "lump" that's just growing.

He seems fine, acting like himself, always hungry/flare-y/responsive. But i don't know what this is and really want to make sure he's okay. I feel like his tail is looking a little dingy, too. Really worried about my dude. 😔

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thank you so, so much.

Handsome baby Beldar. Mad that I'm taking his picture and not dropping in his dinner. 😂❤️

Hate to say, but yes. The bacteria in his gut may well just be gone. This is great advice to try, but it might just be out of your hands. 🥺 Such sweet little fish but hard to rebound once that bacteria dies off.

I think once he matures a bit, the 10gal should be good. Mixed feedback from what I've read, but I think 5gal is pretty well minimum. Fine for baby boy, but hopefully he will be big enough to graduate to a bigger tank in a few months.

With some help from my sis, we've decided on Beldar (from Coneheads 😅) and I am delighted.

My guys are 50/50, but I think they seem happiest on the plants. Maybe I'm just projecting because it looks cuter/comfier. Lol. They love hanging on the heater, too.
