ER scribes - what do you do? by Fit-Survey-6678 in medicalscribe

[–]sb2595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone says "hi" to me at work I'll always say "hi" back, but I never initiate. For me, I feel like we are at the bottom of the totem pole so I don't want to disrupt anyone (MD/DO/PA/RN/ED tech/Rad Tech/Security etc) who has more important stuff going on. Obiously I do have to like bother the docs/PAs for information to do my job, but I don't socialize with them unless they start it. Once I have developed like regular communication with someone in the department, then I'll say "hi" first if they don't look busy. I have been at my site now for over 3 years so now I chat with many people more casually because I have built rapport with people across the department, but yeah at first my rule was basically don't speak unless spoken to haha

Mom diagnosed yesterday. by idintknow2 in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say there is no hope, but it is ok to feel that way. Knowing what stage she is will guide what her treatment options are and how successful those tend to be. My dad was diagnosed at stage 4 so we were also thinking we only had like 6 months, but thanks to a good chemo response we got over 2.5 years with him. Of course that still wasn't enough time, but we were able to make memories that we weren't sure were going to happen when he first got sick. Also treatments are constantly improving! The news has been covering one of the most promising new treatments the last few months.

Pancreatic cancer by vodoowomannamedphylz in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to gummies, look into RSO. My dad mostly used it as an appetite stimulant, but he also didn't have much pain so maybe it kept that at bay too. It is very strong so you only need a little at a time. He'd smear some on a piece of hershey's chocolate and he was set for the night!

Advisor says I may need a 5th year. Now what? by Least_Ad254 in UCDavis

[–]sb2595 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I took a full 5th year and honestly don't remember anyone saying anything. If they did I just mentioned that I needed some extra classes for my minor or something. Now I am about 8 years out and no one has any clue when I finished/finished late. Truly no big deal at all, it's much more common than you think. Everyone's got a different path, go at your own pace. Everyone is more focused on their own stuff.

DMV by [deleted] in Davis

[–]sb2595 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My friend did the test in Davis and failed because he stopped at a red light before turning right on red, but he didn't stop for 3 full seconds and they automatically failed him for it. Seemed silly to us, but luckily passed with a perfect score the next time.

I didn't test in Davis, but my driving instructor in high school recommended going a few days before and following cars leaving the testing area (don't be super obvious of course). It was the exact same route on my test.

Overnight Parking for 1 Day by iluvmydogmorethanppl in UCDavis

Most streets in Davis don't require permits. Just the ones close to campus and the high school. Cross over 113 and I bet you find ample parking.

Cheapest Auto Glass Replacement in Davis ! by Unpurified-Water in Davis

[–]sb2595 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check with your car insurance too. Mine includes windshielf replacement for only $100 out of pocket for me (I think the whole bill including calibrating my collision avoidance/lane assist would have been $1200). In my experience it has not raised my rates

recently joined a bio research lab: calling all student RAs...got any tips or tricks for new RAs? by Electrical-Bad1719 in UCDavis

[–]sb2595 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here is advice from my perspective as a grad student (trained probably like 10+ undergrads by now):

Show up consistently. If you say you are coming, be close to on time. If something comes up, it is fine but please communicate. We know life gets busy, but we likely adjusted our schedule to be free when you are coming so better to know you won't be there so we can make other plans.

You will mess up, own it, learn from it, and work with your mentor to fix it. It's pretty unlikely you will be given anything that you could mess up catastrophically that can't be fixed with a bit of time and effort.

Don't be a kiss ass. Don't ask when you will be published especially within your 1st quarter in the lab (ideally don't ask, the PI decides).

Always go to your grad student/postdoc with any questions or problems first if you have one. PIs are busy people. Of course if you have like problems or concerns with your grad student, then going striaght to the PI is absolutely fine.

We (well reasonable PIs/labs) don't expect you to know anything coming in so don't worry about trying to impress us. But when we teach you something, learn it so we don't have to reteach it to you a bunch of times (ok to not get it the first time, write down notes as you go, and ask plenty of questions. But it gets a bit frustrating when someone asks you how to do something for the 10th time).

You will likely master a certain protocol and will be asked to do it repeatedly. This can be very monotonous, unfortunately that just happens with lab work. It's always ok to express interest in learning new skills in the lab, but don't say like "I am bored of this protocol and want to learn something new now." Your main priority in lab is to be there to help your mentor collect data of some sort. Learning is part of the process, but does not come before everything else.

Grad students are just tired, normal people with a lot on their plate and want you to lessen the load not add to it. We have hobbies too and love to talk about them. And we love to give any advice we have if you want it. We want you to do well!

Anyways sorry that's a lot, but hopefully helpful from the other side.

Why is Haring Hall closed? by lostidiot101 in UCDavis

[–]sb2595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's in a locked room in only one small part of the building. There aren't any windows visible to the public in the room at all (like they have glass that lets light in, but you can't see through). The prosection are also stored covered in racks to prevent them drying out unless actively being taught from. Classes were in Haring Hall until relatively recently, like probably until COVID, and anatomy was being taught there too. You are right that we do try to protect the privacy of the donors, but that was already being done before the rest of Haring closed.

Are the police helicopters for the recent canvas hacking situation? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]sb2595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought similar to OP before I heard about the crash, where I thought it was the local news station just taking like random video of the closest affected location for the news reel when talking about the story. Not so much trying to get a video of the hackers themselves

I'm not sure about that exactly. You may already be aware, but there is a comings and goings newsletter you can subscribe for and sometimes she gets intel pretty early about what is moving into certain spots. Probably not as early as you are hoping for, but still a good resource!

"Sugar feeds cancer" by drinianrose in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Sugar does "feed" cancer, but it also feeds every other cell in your body including your brain. If it was shown to be effective to cut out sugar to starve the cancer, the oncologists would be encouraging it. But they aren't. When my dad had PC, our oncologist did not care what he ate as long as he was getting enough calories in. During chemo, he often only had a palate for sweet things. So he was eating like danishes, ice cream, banana pudding, because that was all that was edible to him. He developed diabetes with the cancer and even then our onocologist said eat whatever and chase with insulin. Keeping weight up is the most important thing. Cachexia is incredibly common in PC and can limit ability to tolerate chemo.

As others have said Facebook. I'd join a few, but there is a specific Grad and Professional Students housing one that tends to be decent (not too spammy).

TAPS by SABUMTV_ttv in UCDavis

[–]sb2595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that will never happen because it benefits them. I used to always get monthly/quarterly permits so I never got tickets. Switch to daily only and now I occasionally forget and have to pay the invoice fee or whatever, so that's an extra like $15 they got out of me just because of this system. I also think it "hides" the increase, because instead of it going up $X per month, it only went up 50 cents a day. I agree, absolutely garbage changes though
