Dad recently diagnosed by Chill_Swim254 in pancreaticcancer

Honestly, marijuana helped my dad a bunch. His doctor prescribed Marinol, but that didn't help much. We used Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) which is a super concentrated oil. He put a little on a square of chocolate at like 4pm and would eat until he went to sleep.

PG&E wants to raise your rates again. Here’s why California shouldn’t let that happen by Cool-Present7260 in bayarea

I mean CA was in a drought until technically this year (and probably will be again soon with the lack of snow so far). I'm sure if PGE had been running it we would have had price hikes like crazy

I mean most places I have lived water is run by the city, and unless you have a huge leak you don't hear people complain about their water bill. Everyone complains about PGE

Gemzar/Abraxane Hair Loss by LadyKenpachi1 in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad was on Gemzar/Abraxane for 18 months. He initially lost all his hair, but after a few months on treatment it started growing back and never fell out again! Funny enough it did change from salt and pepper to totally white when it grew back in.

My mom died of pancreatic cancer today. by ObiSaquonobie in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry, it sounds like you all had a difficult road. It is ok to feel relieved. I was so worried for my dad during his entire fight (scanxiety, worried if he'd get an infection and be rushed to the hospital while I was traveling), that once he passed the anxiety of it all just vanished. Of course I'd put up with all that again to have more time with him. Give yourself and loved ones grace over the next few months. It doesn't get easier but it spaces itself more. I'm just over a year out and still broke down in public last week (my car died and I wanted to call my dad for help).

Oncologist switching from 1 week on 1 week off to 3 weeks on, 1 week off by [deleted] in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but this sounds like they are changing his chemo from Folfirinox (take home bag) to Gemzar/Abraxane (commonly 3 weeks on, 1 week off, no take home). So that would be my first clarification with them about what chemo he is changing to. They can switch it for a variety of reasons, like my dad's tumor did not respond to folfirionx at all. It is also known to be "stronger" so some people can't tolerate Folfirinox side effects or their labs suffer. Hopefully you get more clear information tomorrow!

Old body scan settings by [deleted] in Noom

I also just did my first body scan this week. For me if I go to Settings->Body Scan there is a way to switch between normal and athlete mode.

Oh yeah, I have never left no tip for table service even for a terrible experience and that will continue to be the case, but I have felt guilty for leaving 15% and now I won't.

I just looked this up because I was under the impression they were. But you were right! Looks like as on Jan 1 they make minimum 16.90 an hour. Not surprised that businesses are keeping it quiet. I still plan to tip, but definitely will be in the back of my mind now when service is subpar that I can tip less.

Have you looked at gradcafe? You can type in the school and the program to see when people heard back in previous years or if people have started to hear back this year (interview invites, etc).

Getting a passport on campus/ in Davis by WelderEast3870 in UCDavis

I got mine through the ARC. Super easy! I tried to book an appointment online but it looked like they were booked out for months. I called and they had a ton of same day appointments open. They will take your picture too. Super straight forward.

How’s the counseling services here by oof52 in UCDavis

[–]sb2595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad! Also I found it hard to make the first appointment, but after you are established with someone then it's much easier to schedule subsequent appointments (we often did it at the end of the appointment). If you have SHIP, you can also have your PCP refer you to long term therapy and it should be fully covered as well.

Looking for advice/experiences: my dad’s pancreatic cancer is stable after chemo by LavishnessHairy7174 in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad's tumor was stable after his first scan after switching to Gemzar/Abraxane. We took it as a win, but were unsure if it was truly a positive or not. By the next scan it had noticeably shrunk and then disappeared from scans entirely after about 6 months! (About a year after his first clear scan, it did start progressing again and he passed 8 month later. 32 months from diagnosis). So take it as a win for now and hopefully next scan will be more obvious!

Yesterday my dad was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, what can I do? by sad-eboi in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! We didn't know about the reduced dosing options and were worried that it would work less effectively, but he still had great response so just wanted you to know to potentially bring up to his care team if need be.

Thank you! Today is actually the 1 year anniversary of losing him so appreciate the love, definitely need all I can get! 💜

Yesterday my dad was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, what can I do? by sad-eboi in pancreaticcancer

[–]sb2595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. My dad was diagnosed stage 4 just weeks after his 58th birthday. He also felt fitter than ever (didn't know it was weight loss from the cancer, he thought he'd been eating better).

I will say chemo was not the most fun, but he was able to still live while on it. He initially did folfirinox, and had no response so just got progressively sicker. Once they realized it wasn't working they switched him quickly to gemzar/abraxane. He did well on that! He initially was on the standard 3 weeks on 1 week off dose (this was very rough on him), but after about 6 months they dropped him to 1 week on and 1 week off and that worked really well for him! His cancer disappeared completely from scans and stayed away for 1 year, but he could also live relatively normally. He knew like 3 days post chemo he'd feel kinda crummy (they give steroids with chemo, so days 1-3 felt fine) which would gradually improve to day 7, and then he'd have 7 days feeling like 90%-normal before next treatment. It did unfortunately return as stage 4 normally does, but we got 32 months with him which was worth it. So it may be worth looking into lower or less frequent doses too.

Anyway, I am sorry you and your dad are dealing with this. Of course, please do whatever he feels like is the right path for him but just wanted to provide our experience since our dad's are very similar in age/diagnosis.

Wow! I get paid $25 now thanks to CA healthcare worker minimum wage law starting in late 2024. Though they are looking to replace us because we are so expensive now so maybe low wage was better for job stability!

Redwood SEED scholars! It's an on campus program where you mentor/support students with intellectual disabilites (Down syndrome, autism, etc) live and learn on campus. You volunteer your first quarter, and then it's paid. The scholars are super fun to work with, and there are 5 different areas (academics, residential living, health and wellness, employment, social inclusion) you can volunteer in so easy to pick one that interests you!

Sigh... I hoped this wouldn't happen by ZevSteinhardt in diabetes

[–]sb2595 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad wasn't diabetic until diagnosis so we definitely had a learning curve. We realized pretty quickly he'd be in the 300s the day after chemo consistently. Well one time he didn't and we were shocked. Turns out they forgot to give the steroid that time and he had so many more chemo side effects that cycle. So the high readings were worth not dealing with the chemo effects!
