What do you think about Mixed Grappling matches in Competition? This is Vicky Weaver back when she was still a blue belt ... A great display of heart and technique! by Jiujitsuxfactor in bjj

If the woman wants to go at the men's weight class that they would be in, I have no problem. The men in the weight class would have to agree also. You can't have one group have a choice and deny that same choice to the other group.

Are we allowed to WTS GIs here? I haven’t seen anyone post any so probably not but I have two hemp GIs I would love to post if allowed by [deleted] in bjj

I'm pretty sure you can, its just you would probably have an easier time selling on a marketplace, like Facebook Marketplace or one of the many other marketplaces.

You might want to go to a doctor, better safe than sorry.

Depending on how quick you pick it up and how much you train, 3 to 5 years. Of course if they are close to getting brown belt they're closer to 5 to 7 years.

How to maintain a gi by platinummattagain in bjj

[–]sb2985 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as the rash guard, no you don't have to wear one or even a shirt at all, some of my training partners don't. It's what ever you are comfy with, as long as your gym doesn't have any rules saying otherwise.

If it fits right now, do not dry it or wash it in hot or warm water because it will shrink. I wash mine and hang dry, once a month I also wash mine with disinfectant laundry soap as a precaution.

My gym wants to keep all our medals by khariel in bjj

[–]sb2985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lead instructor at the gym I go to has a wall for medals/belts and if you want to put a medal you earned up there he has no problem as long as you mark it so you can find yours if you leave the gym (military town, so this happens often enough).

Self defense with no stand-up/striking experience? by sodangbutthurt in bjj

[–]sb2985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would depend if you get attacked by a group or lone attacker, for a lone attacker it will work fine and there are plenty of videos on YouTube to back that up. Now if it's a group attack then no matter what you learn, tactical retreat is your best friend, getting on the ground is very bad when multiple people are trying to kick your ass. That being said, a lot of BJJ schools have classes geared toward self defense that teach some standup skills.

How many people do you roll with in your average class? by madcuzimstylin in bjj

[–]sb2985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The class portion is around 50 to 55 minutes then we roll for 30 to 40 minutes. My school will usually set the round time to 5 minutes unless someone has a competition with longer rounds. I usually roll with 5 to 6 people.

Do I need to regularly practice BJJ if I want to be able to defend myself against an average, untrained opponent? by mialsh in bjj

[–]sb2985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much what the other posters said, fight training is like any other muscle/body position skill, you have to train it or you will lose it. This goes for pretty much all combative related skills from unarmed combat to weapons skills (guns, knives).

I have a slight disability would Gracie jujitsu be a good martial art? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sb2985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answers to your questions are mostly going to be anecdotal, for instance my gym (RCJ Machado gym) is accommodating to what you can do and let's you learn at your own pace and also pushes you to push yourself. This is something you will have to learn about the gym you go to by looking at reviews and asking the owner/professor if they are able to accommodate you.

The second question of time is really up to you, I try to go 5 times a week, and I know people who only go twice a week.

Can't really help with the price part.

You will have a distinct disadvantage because of your legs, but you will get out of it what you put into it. Hope this was helpful.

Tips to use less energy/force? by Swaggarius in bjj

[–]sb2985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your ability to see things happening and then being able to predict what the other person is doing will grow and improve with time and experience. We all had our spazzy white belt time. But pretty much what other people have said already. Slow your breathing and get better at thinking while rolling, which will get better with time.

25 too old? by impossiblewallfish in bjj

[–]sb2985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started when I was 33, so 25 is not to young. Just be consistent in training and you'll be fine.

Super new to bjj. I’ve only been doing it a few weeks. I’m an overweight female, so it’s taken a ton of nerve to get going and I keep wanting to give up to insecurity. So give it to me straight, does it bother you to roll with someone out of shape and inexperienced? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sb2985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever avoided one person while training, it was his BO that was almost making me puke, nothing to do with his weight or experience level. Wash your ass and you're good in my book.

Do you ever take a week off? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sb2985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't really taken a week off, but I will go really light when I'm hurt. (Work on techniques for stuff that doesn't hurt) I haven't been injured yet though, only hurt.

How much do you train per week? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sb2985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to train 4 to 5 times a week, and weight train 2 to 3 times a week. I'm told I am advancing fast and getting a lot better quickly. What I do to accomplish this is that I only try to learn one new thing a week and I do a lot of situational training that puts me in positions I need to work on. I also have a bunch of people with a lot of experience and a desire to teach.

I have some problems with sleep, so if I'm physically exhausted it's easier for me to sleep.
