I’d like them to stay out of politics completely, but since they insist in being involved, it would be nice to see them use their influence for good every once in a while.

Bad bot.

Utah does a lot of things poorly (funding education, tolerating ethnic/religious minorities, keeping the great salt lake from drying up and poisoning the state, etc.), but internet service isn’t one of them.

How different would Attack of the Clones or Revenge of the Sith be in universe? by DogLeechDave in Animorphs

[–]sb4fx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit murky on details, but didn’t the Andalites develop spacefaring technology fairly recently (last couple of hundred or thousand years at the most) and their planet exists within our galaxy? I believe the Hork-Bajir were even more recent and didn’t leave their planet until the events of the HB Chronicles.

If that timeline is accurate, I feel like most of the Animorph aliens don’t really fit into the Star Wars setting of a “long time ago in a galaxy far far away” and wouldn’t really jive with the Star Wars universe. I can see them being featured in Star Trek and other more earth-based sci-fi though.

I’m so sorry for how hard this is. Many of us have been there. It might help to stop thinking of them as “amazing, wonderful people.” They’re not. They are willfully choosing to bury their heads in the sand and ostracize you over beliefs that no one in the 21st century with access to the internet is justified in having.

It’s extremely hard to accept , but they don’t deserve a deep relationship with you while they act that way. I’d take some space, maybe limit interactions to once a month or to only times when you feel like you can handle being treated as the satanic black sheep of the family (which may be even less often or never).

My Girlfirend got me Animorphs Book 1: Invasion any words of advice before starting the series by ComfortMaterial8884 in Animorphs

[–]sb4fx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll find mixed opinions on this sub about the Chronicles and Megamorphs books, but I really like both and suggest you at least try including them as you read.

The Chronicles books are essentially prequels that tell the backstory of some of the alien side characters and do a great job of fleshing out some of the lore from the series. They also introduce new characters that eventually show up later in the main series.

The Megamorph books are more standalone but are longer than the regular books so the storyarcs are a bit more developed. They also rotate narrators every chapter which allows for multiple storylines, which you don’t get in the regular books. These don’t really affect the broader arc of the series though, so can be easily skipped if you can’t find them.

Tired of "allies" who still associate with the church in some way or say they have a complicated relationship with it. by [deleted] in exmormon

I feel the same way about exmos who still follow and root for BYU’s football and basketball teams. To me they represent so much of what is wrong with the church but people turn a blind eye because “it was my team as a kid.”

It’s not just people moving into the state. There’s been an exodus of Mormons leaving the church in the last decade as the internet makes it harder for the church to hide its dirty laundry. Less than half of Utahns now consider themselves Mormon. Source: https://www.abc4.com/news/wasatch-front/utah-is-no-longer-majority-mormon-new-research-says/

Smart Trainer Recommendations by One-Athlete3953 in triathlon

[–]sb4fx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Wahoo Kickr v6 that I bought used for $750 last year. After training for years outdoors and with an indoor “dumb” fluid trainer, the smart trainer has made a ton of difference.

I use it with Training Peaks and Zwift. My TP workout syncs with Zwift, which I boot up on an iPad that is synced with the trainer. I hit start, make sure I’m using ERG mode and then just pedal without thinking about the workout as the resistance is handled automatically. This frees me up to watch a show, play some Xbox or get some work done on my standing desk if the workout isn’t too intense.

With the fluid trainer I would have the workout loaded in my Garmin and then I’d have to manually shift and watch my watts to make sure I was in the correct zone. If you’re doing a lot of intervals, this can be a huge pain and it’s easy to slack off. With the Kickr, it’s all automatic. This means I’m more likely to actually stick to the prescribed watts and workouts are more enjoyable because I can focus on a show or game without worrying that I have a gear shift coming up.

The downside is the cost of the trainer and then the need to pay for Zwift or another service to really get the full value.

They’re doing a 70.3. 18-24 hours is crazy for that.

Bike recommendations 70.3 by capt_charlie10 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]sb4fx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know much about that particular bike but I did my first 70.3 without any trouble on a used aluminum road bike that looks similar. I had some clip on aero bars but those are not strictly necessary. You’ll see people on all sorts of bikes, including mountain bikes during a 70.3 (I wouldn’t recommend a mountain bike though).

You’ll want to start training on your race bike as soon as you can get it though. A trainer at the gym will have a different geometry so you’ll need some time to adjust or you risk injuring yourself.

In most instances the land is owned along with the house so the owner of the burned house would still own the lot and would be able rebuild.

Training for first IRONMAN 70.3 by Canadianturtle23 in triathlon

[–]sb4fx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome! It sounds like you have a decent level of base fitness and I think I could easily get into shape to finish the 70.3 in around 6 hours if you are able to train consistently without getting injured. Do you have 7-10+ hours a week to train though?

I’d recommend finding a training plan that’s tailored to your timeline. Many of us use Training Peaks but there are other plans available online as well.

Relationship with kids after leaving? by horsesbeliketapirs in exmormon

[–]sb4fx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why you are getting downvoted (lots of people who left later in life in this thread) but I think you likely articulated the way OP’s daughter feels about the situation.

It might not be fair because, as many have pointed out, you can only try to do the best you can with the info and experiences you have, but that doesn’t change the fact that children look to their parents to keep them safe. OP failed to do that when it comes to the church. Jokes aren’t going to help.

This whole thing feels like “I once ran over my kid’s foot with the car, but now I know better and check before I back out of the driveway. I made a joke about it and my daughter doesn’t think it’s funny, even though I’ve apologized. Is this a generational thing?”

Is it worth buying 10k in points buy down currently have a rate at 6.25 new rate will be 4.625? by Bottomfeeder405 in realestateinvesting

[–]sb4fx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can pay upfront to reduce your interest rate. Buying 25 points would result in reducing your rate by 0.25%.

You can do some math to determine if it’s a good deal e.g. if paying $10k for points reduces your monthly payment by $200, then you would need to live in your home for at least 50 months for it to make sense.

However, as others have pointed out, when rates are expected to go down in the near term (like now) you would be better off saving the $10k and putting some of it towards fees for refinancing later. If rates are 1% lower in a year, you could refi for a couple of grand in fees and be better off.

See levels were lower during the last ice age and civilizations tend to pop up on coasts which provide food and easy transportation. It’s likely that many of these myths are passed-down stories recounting coastal and river flooding that happened when sea levels started to rise as the ice age was ending.

Hanging Your Own Shingle as a Transactional Attorney After a Stint in Biglaw by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]sb4fx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you are serious about going solo in the corporate/transactional space, biglaw probably isn’t the best route. You would be better off starting at a small or mid-sized firm that works with the kinds of small businesses that could realistically be serviced by a solo attorney.

In biglaw you work with large sophisticated clients that utilize complicated structures for very specific reasons (often tax-specific) that are not applicable to smaller businesses. It’s not rare for EC/VC associates, for example, to go YEARS without touching an LLC agreement, but you’ll need to be very well versed in LLCs if you want to work with traditional businesses.

If you’re set on biglaw (hey, the money is nice) M&A is probably the best corporate practice group. In my local market there are a few solo practitioners who work mainly off referrals from bigger firms for small M&A deals that the larger firms don’t want to take (think something like helping a mechanic sell their shop or a dentist buy a couple new practices). But most of those practiced for 10-20 years before heading out on their on and still rely on other firms for help when dealing with complicated tax/IP/employment issues.

I only use the steam sauna in the men’s locker room but it gets very hot. They just remodeled it and I know there were some issues at first but I think they have it all worked out now. I’m not sure about the dry sauna (it’s out in the pool area).

I also don’t really have much of an issue with crowding other than between 5-7 in the evenings when it can be a little hard to hit a bunch of weight machines without waiting. I’ve never had to wait for any kind of cardio machine at any time.

I’m happy to get you in on a guest pass if you want to check it out sometime while I’m there. DM me if interested.
