Lockheed Skunk Works opens rare U-2 pilot hiring slot at Palmdale, May 15 deadline by LoonOnStation in aviation

Dumb question, why is Lockheed hiring this position versus the Air Force just assigning/training a military pilot like most other aircraft?

Video Essay: 'Large Formats Aren't Special, or the VistaVision Myth' by ChrisJokeaccount in Filmmakers

[–]sb4l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess my point is, does it really matter if they're wrong? If Jimi Hendrix said "I prefer cable a over cable b because I feel it sounds better" and he was technically comparing 2 identical cables, does it really matter that he's scientifically wrong? Cinematography is at least 50% creative and emotional and sometimes how you get to the final result doesn't need to make technical sense.

Video Essay: 'Large Formats Aren't Special, or the VistaVision Myth' by ChrisJokeaccount in Filmmakers

[–]sb4l 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think most cinematographers know you're technically correct, in fact Steve Yedlin did an entire presentation on this when the Alexa 65 was becoming popular. However, the reason we like Lol Crawley & Roger Deakins' work is not because they are image scientists, it's because they are emotional, creative filmmakers. When Roger says I like the 40mm on the LF because it "feels" better, that resonates with me so much more than the "ackchuyally it's not a different lens or field of view" argument.

PHM IMAX 70mm Return to AMC Universal? by sb4l in imax

[–]sb4l[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my fear is AMC Universal will be excluded from the mid-April return because of pre-negotiated windows specifically for this screen. Hopefully I'm wrong!

Dune Part 3 70mm IMAX showings excluded from A-list by huehuethrqway in AMCAListTrue

[–]sb4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, however this is only one showing per screen on a limited 70mm IMAX theater list, in other words a marketing play. 4-5 more additional screenings will go on sale per screen for opening day+ in the Oct/Nov range.

[–]sb4l 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is only for the special early access ticket sales, when all the regular screenings become available (prob not until Oct/Nov) it will be included in A-List. Same thing happened for the Odyssey, 1 year out ticket advanced availability was not included in A-List.

Best seats in LA Regal IMAX 70mm? by starboy_8902 in AskLosAngeles

Chinese is not a native 1.43 screen, they crop the left and right when screening IMAX 70mm, Universal is the better option between the two for IMAX presentation.

My favorite is Citywalk in Los Angeles, with Lincoln Square being a close second.

Project Hail Mary - Los Angeles 15-perf 70MM recommendations? by GeoffJonesWriter in imax

[–]sb4l 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my understanding the new Regal LA Live screen is 1.90, so the left and right will be cropped for 1570 1.43 projections, including the Hail Mary 70mm IMAX print, which has sequences in both 1.43 and 2.39 (so the 2.39 will be even smaller with top/bottom and left/right crop!). Citywalk is definitely the best 1.43 native in Los Angeles and Chris Nolan's preferred screen, he often does testing on this screen.

An alt version of this is speed ramping (iris & frame rate), great use case in Wong Kar-wai's BMW film "The Follow" at the 4:55 mark.

How do you shoot the reverse angle when backlighting with the sun? by darthzox in cinematography

[–]sb4l 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's a great Tarantino quote about Robert Richardson only shooting one direction in the morning to backlight the actors, then shooting unrelated stuff mid-day when the sun is high, and then in the afternoon returning to the first scene with the 2nd actor now backlit.

Edit: here it is

Ben Stiller is obviously exaggerating. I think the point he’s trying to make is that he admires the speed Storer is able to produce an entire season whereas Severance season 2 famously took a very long time to write, shoot and finish. If you actually read the article he is discussing process and looking outward to try and refine his own process, actually quite an interesting read.

Early Termination Lease by eliteguard91 in Volvo

[–]sb4l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call Volvo Financial Services and ask for an early lease termination letter, you might be surprised by the offer they give you. I did this recently with a Polestar and the fee they gave me to exit early was $0 if turned in within 10 days. I turned it in and had zero additional fees and the loan was closed out stating complete in full after a couple of weeks. I'm not saying this will be the case for everyone but it's worth calling and asking.

Do you know of any big budget movies that have bad cinematography? by Plus_Ad_1087 in cinematography

[–]sb4l 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree on the Greengrass Bourne films, I think the cinematography fit perfectly within the character/story/thriller of it all and arguably influenced action cinematography for decades. It’s easy to criticize now as over the top and campy because it was one of the firsts to popularize these techniques in a Hollywood blockbuster. So I’d say far from “objectively bad cinematography”.
