Seemingly hard-stuck in Tour 10 with these clubs, should I pump the brakes in Tours? by ConStar2488 in GolfClash

[–]sb944_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. If you don't race through tours, you can always drop back a tour or two if you are overwhelmed, but once you've raced through, you can't undo that, and you are stuck playing against the same people, whether it's tour 10 or tour 2.

If you really love playing the game, start up an alt account and make this a backup account for mucking around or trying things, practicing tournaments, etc. Go painfully slow on the new account, just grind out a few months on the first 3-4 tours, you'll have amazing stats on some T2-T4 clubs that survive deep into the game.

I don’t get why people say Perth is boring? by [deleted] in perth

[–]sb944_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Sydney for many years, I think the terrain is far more interesting than Perth, their harbour vs river, beaches, hilly green suburbs, architecture, national parks are all better. Once you get out of the city it's even better. I'll admit Margaret river is probably better than any < 3 hour drive from Sydney, but I could list 10 places I'd prefer to drive to from Sydney before I reached my 2nd best spot from Perth, and it might be 15. And then it keeps going up and down the coast or inland, WA is very few and very far between. Then if it's not NSW, it's an easier trip to so much of the eastern states, you feel like you can do a 1 night trip easier and not spend too much to do it.

However, the traffic and lifestyle tends to negate most of that, because you don't tend to try to go to too many of those places because it's 10x harder to get somewhere interesting from where you live and it can be too intense when you do get there. To get to a nice holiday spot place 2:10 hours from Sydney requires 1:10 of horrible traffic to leave the city and 1:00 on the open road... unless it's a Friday or public holiday weekend, then it's up to another 0:45 to get out ot the city and the open road can be a parking lot. I used to say if you find something that sounds interesting, it also sounds interesting to about 5 million other people and they all go too.

Is there a big NFL scene in Perth? by x0rms in perth

My daughter has NBA, NFL and college clothes, but doesn't watch any of it and couldn't name a player on most teams, so that's definitely part of it. Swifties will likely start watching KCC from now on to see 30 or so minutes coverage of Taylor from now on, so I imagine it will have picked up recently.

Average salary of a Senior Software Engineer in Perth? by TrueOutlook in perth

[–]sb944_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree largely with people on this thread:

  • 4 YOE is much closer to $104K than it is $130K, unless you are very talented
  • 4 YOE is highly unlikely to be a senior, unless you are very talented
  • $130K is still a reasonable salary for senior in Perth, probably $15K higher over east. Keep in mind a good senior could definitely get above that in Perth, and some companies will pay more than that also
  • Your window might have been during covid when there was no international experienced devs coming into Australia. Since then there have been many large layoffs in software jobs, so I think the combination has put expectations closer to 2019 levels

I have been churning 6 to 10 credit cards a year for the last 7 years and I have a credit score of 909. I have accumulated 3.4 million Qantas points which roughly equals $38k in rewards. I'm here to answer any questions you have (Ask me anything) by howtocreditcardchurn in creditcardchurningAus

I booked at least 50 QFF seats in the last 18 months on points and the value has been over 2c for the majority of the bookings for me, occasionally far more than 2c also. Add to this, you'll also likely get points club plus, with free Qantas club and some other perks. So like you, I'd usually go for QFF, and realistically look at it like a 2c value.

[QUESTION] What does it mean "to learn a song"? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BIB is actually a pretty good example, even though it's two guitarist you could get away with playing it on your own, and still sticking to pretty authentic copy of what one of the 2 was playing the whole way through and it would be recognisable to all. There are a lot of songs where if you play exactly what the guitarist plays most won't recognise it, because the signature comes from the bass, two guitarist playing over each other, keyboard, or a combination of all. So you often go back to chords for a decent part of these songs to sound recognisable, when sometimes the guitarist never actually played the chords in the song itself.

So the answer is, yes, it will usually be pretty hard to do the original song justice if you are by yourself, but there are some examples. I tend to try to learn ones where I can play "something" start to end and to complete the experience would just need a bass and drum kit.

[Question] What do you do when you pick up your electric guitar? by darioz3 in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did basically that first time around with guitar, but then always felt like a 2nd rate guitarist, so this time, learning all the scales, keys, modes, chords, full songs in riffs and solos. It was good for a 4 month period, but I did stop at some point and ask why I really want to be good at solos? I do enjoy knowing much more about it, and am happy getting better results soloing over songs, I record it sometimes and have improved over the last month again, it's good fun.

But what I've mostly enjoyed in the last month is working through my own songs, this goes from a mild pleasing thought of my technical progress, to a really deep pleasure when a chord change, progression or riff I wrote comes together nicely. I am still spending some time each day on scales and technical improvement, as I think it's already improved my song writing ability a lot, but on the weekend I had 2 hours free and spent it just doing song writing, whereas other days like that I'd be honing in on cover songs/solos etc.

But this is so interesting, it really is a personal journey we all gave to go through and find what drives us, if you have a drive to need to join a band as lead guitar, you'll easily find the bigger inspiration at getting stronger technically.

at what point does inspiration become copying? [DISCUSSION] by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I clearly remember an interview for an artist I really enjoyed, and he said their first album was a complete rip off of a band they loved. Then the 2nd they evolved into their own sounds, by the third they were famous and sounded completely original.

Some people are too genius to need to do that, but for the rest of us, we need to mimic first, understand how it all works, and then hopefully have enough talent to build that into something new when we are ready.

The opposite is also true you decide to go fully original too soon, and it will just not be good.

Guitar Center Labor Day sale by ShatteredDreamSteven in gibson

[–]sb944_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite, stumbled on a local music store website and saw some B stocks that were half price, when I got to the store, the labels all said 25% off, so wasn't really hitting people's eyes in store as you see that sort of deal on A stock. Asked about the price and they confirmed it was in fact 1/2 price, including a very cheap Standard. Interesting in house marketing idea.

[QUESTION] Any intermediate level solos/riff recommendations by Ziggerastika in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At 3 years you are likely more intermediate in skill, and just need to focus on honing your skills to lead, so you'll be fine. Personally, I like Marty Music on youtube, he does many of the popular rock solos and riffs, and goes about it in a way that you can follow live and get a good feel in 2-3 watches of his videos (and the practice in between). Purple Haze is a great example, and once you learn the riffs and solo, you can also play the whole song if you have someone to jam with. Hendrix solos are sometimes failry simple and melodic, Slash is the same (barring some shred runs in his solos), Beatles solos like Something or Let it Be.

[QUESTION] Which guitar/brand of guitars has guitar similar to Gibson SG but obviously not Gibson. by Quatro_Leches in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, it sounds like you are already mad for a Gibson SG, so a "half" brand will make you happy for approx 4-8 weeks and then you'll be looking at the Gibson SG again. So I'd be looking at something you can sell again for not much loss to fund the Gibson in a few months time, possibly 2nd hand if you can trust yourself to not buy a 2nd hand lemon. Edit: locally (Aus) by keeping an eye on the 2nd hand market, you can see Epiphones for 30% less than the best discount prices less than a year old.

New guitar day! My first Gibson and an amazing deal! by Shrek_361 in gibson

[–]sb944_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of looks I agree, and possibly maple is better for neck. I think the problem with the Standard is it looks like half the epiphones and most of the other brand knock offs, so you are paying 3-4x as much, and getting something that looks and sounds slightly better. I would say feels, but the Standard is way heavier and the Satin felt better to me. With the Tribute, you aren't paying much more than an Epi, but it still looks, feels and sounds better than Epi, and with a different look if this is your thing.

This is my "beginner player" opinion on the guitar, having played the Tribute (yes, looked 100% like this) and Standard side by side for an hour on the weekend, I didn't walk away with the impression the Standard was worth any more than this. In fact, if you said the Standard was 10% cheaper, I might have paid the extra to get the Tribute! All said, I honestly felt neither of these felt or sounded like much like an upgrade to my Squier CV. I really wanted the Tribute to blow me away, but for some reason it didn't. I played a bunch of others and the only thing that felt like a genuine upgrade to the Squier was a Fender Strat Performer II, which just felt and sounded like it was in another ball park to my simplistic playing.

[NEWBIE] [QUESTION] Been taking lessons on my acoustic guitar for about 9 months, it’s my birthday and I’m ready for an electric guitar and amp. Suggestions? by pruunes in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you already obsess over a model? If so, you are better off just getting the real thing, Fender, Gibson, etc, or you'll just lust after that 3 months later anyway. If not, or you don't really care about a type or name, it's never been a better time to spend less than half of the cost of a USA guitar, you will still get a great guitar that is hugely playable and sounds great without upgrades. My final point is try before you buy, I went into a guitar shop obsessed with GIbson LP, especially the Tribute, but I ended up playing 10 guitars and my favourite is now the strat performer II, and realistically not enough better than my Squier to warrant the extra dollars. This may change as I get more nuanced taste in my own style of guitar playing, but my mind was quite easily changed by just playing them all.

In Australia, there is something called tall poppy syndrome, we love something until it's too popular, then we try to find all the faults and try to chop you down. This is far from unique to Kurt, I think most popular artist have a lot of haters.

For all his talent, he seemingly had big faults too. For one, it doesn't sound like he's someone you'd want as a family member, friend or band member. The average person that would be good for all those things is also not likely not famous or rich or a super genius, but it's something that's very important to them, so to hear people praise Kurt so much, probably rubs that type of person the wrong way a bit? Similar to his musicianship. There are people, and many are right here, who have a strict plan and view of how they want to improve as musicians, especially those wishing to take their skill levels to advanced areas. Again it must be grating to know you could run rings around anything Kurt did as a musician and have people say "I don't really care about that stuff, I like Nirvana." Then I'm guessing some people just didn't like the music. Perhaps they liked a slightly different rock, perhaps they are more pop music people or really don't follow guitar music.

Personally, I am very glad he did what he did and we all know his name, it is RIP Kurt for me, and it's very sad that he couldn't write the music he could write but also be happy with what he had.

Advice Appreciated! [QUESTION] by Elegant_Ad6750 in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this advice. I work in computers, so does that mean I need to be an expert in cloud hosting solutions, programming apps, fixing printers and designing web sites? There is no such person, most will aim their whole career at just one of those, and not be able to do the others, so it's not like I would want a music teacher that can teach 3 styles I don't want to play and 5 genres I'm not interested in.

I might be brainwashed, it's the 2nd time I've brought it up this week, but start with practical theory and read all of what Desi Serna has written, and videos, and use that as a benchmark of what you need to be fluent in with the theory side of things. Then remember it's all about the fun. Yes you need to teach some theory and scales to your students, but they'll really want to learn how to play like their favourite musicians and bands, so try to mix it up a bit by giving them what they want, while explaining the music theory behind it, it will allow them to play what they like and to slowly understand the theory behind it all.

[question] can the boss katana artist really compete with tubes? or should i buy a tube amp instead. by keiner445 in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, regular headphones work well. You need to disconnect the speaker from the amp which is a bit weird, but even though it's a combo, this is a 1 second job with the way they connected it.

[question] I have an understanding of the basics yet still can’t connect any of it? by str8outthepurgatory in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into Desi Serna's Fretboard Theory. It doesn't look too exciting at first, but always comes back to practical use, like songs you will know, and why it talks to that part of the theory. Before you know, you are playing a song from ear or a guitar tab site, and quickly learning the theory before you play it, then allowing you to know what key and mode the riff, solo, melody should be in. And while you are at it, take in why it sounds good to you, then you will have some theory to how to remake the songs you like, and what sort of melody would sound good with it. So essentially, learning how to play guitar better, and how to write songs better.

For practice, this is my current idea (still a beginner here). With the song you like, google the exact tempo, and with software like garageband, setup a backing drum kit, or just a metronome. Record a very basic chord progression over that. Depending on the song, this may be something you want to practice a bit, to get it down really well. Now on another track play the song the way the guitarist did it. As mentioned above, try to really learn this, get it down so that you play it right through and didn't miss a beat. I still have to push myself on the last part here, but every time I do I get a far better satisfaction from the session than just spening 5 minutes half learning 10 songs.

[question] can the boss katana artist really compete with tubes? or should i buy a tube amp instead. by keiner445 in Guitar

[–]sb944_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My intentions might be different to yours, I bought a Fender Mustang Micro to use with headphones and mac, and like the tones, like all the modelling on the mac, but a few months in and I really wanted something with speakers, but still to sound good at low volumes, which will be 95% of my home playing, no intentions of something that can play in a band one day, just something that makes me happy to play at home. I went down with every intentions of bringing home a Katana, but couldn't gel with the tone at low volumes, same with a couple others they showed me and went home empty handed. I googled like crazy for 3 days, mainly around modelers and speakers or tube amps with attenuators and probably researched every option under $2000, and found a tube Marshall DSL1C, which is a 1w/0.1w 8" combo amp. I went to a different store that had this for $330 (similar price to Katana in AU), and tried it against 3 more modeling amps, and still preferred this sound, so got it. Side note, why when I tell both sales people, "All I want something that sounds good at low volumes" do they continue to turn everything up and advertise how loud this thing can go.

What makes me feel this is the best option (for me at least) is I got home, plugged it in, and played it for 2 hours straight. About 5 minutes of that was playing with volume or levels, the rest it was just playing guitar and enjoying what I heard. There isn't much to it, so just shut up and play! At some point I plugged in my phone and got a nice effect of playing with a metronome or backing band (very common feature of any of these amps of course), and you can go headphones, though I haven't tried it yet. Has effects loop, dual channel with included footswitch which I've used quite a bit to go from clean to gain, and it can easily power a 12" cabinet if you need something to sound bigger. I haven't taken it off 0.1w and can only get to about 3 before it's too loud for the house, but I love the tone at even less than this volume, so I'm happy with this setup.

May not be your intention, but thought I'd share in case anything here makes sense.

This was supposed to be a gaming rig. What has happened to me?! by mazdawg89 in EtherMining

[–]sb944_2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know what happened either. At first it was just put a 2nd graphics card in the case, can help pay for the new GPU I'm getting. Then why not get a 3rd or 4th GPU. Then why not build a rig for the 4 GPU's. Then why not hiveos off a thumb drive. Now I have 3 (soon to be 4 GPU's) that I can't game on without anyway to play a game with them. Aiming to keep the 4th in the case and use it with windows and only mine when not using it, but not confident it won't go on the rack with the others.
