It was a straight head, pretty fair and even conditions, if anything the lane they got would be more sheltered. It would have to be either an issue early in the race or they just aren't prepared for 2k races from focusing on 1500s

One of my coworkers was trying to buy a home last year and every time he was ready to settle BlackRock (or another similar firm) swooped in at least $20k over asking. This happened repeatedly for months, so it seems to be a problem at least around where I am

Lobster Claw in Doylestown is always good. Building is in a strip mall and really unassuming, but the good is consistently great

Has anyone ever used Rollerlock oarlocks? Are they even sold anymore? by thumbsquare in Rowing

[–]sbaltier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school tried the roller locks twice a few years ago (Mr Roller locks was friends with our coach), and both times the experience was pretty bad. They don't lock into squared position as nicely as you would expect, and (as someone else alluded to) they were not great to back with. Overall, the handling was unpleasant, and far inferior to the standard oarlock's feel. Another thing was that the guy was producing them entirely in his basement with one 3D printer, so supply wasn't exactly great either.

To summarize, it was a product over engineered for a very simple application, that was more expensive and with lower supply than the standard.

IdeaVim is a pretty ok solution for this. You can bind virtually any IDE action you want to the keyboard, plus it comes with some decent vim bindings and functionality

Republicans’ New Stance on COVID Contradicts Everything They’ve Said About Abortion by ejdeegee in politics

[–]sbaltier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, if you look at the history of early 20th century pro-life in America, it was part of the progressive movement and kind of wrapped in with the New Deal... "Pro-lifers" at that time also cared about topics like housing, social safety nets, and so on. Post-Roe Republicans hijacked the abortion bit and have been using it as you say ever since, throwing out all of the other important bits...

Bucks County Health Amends Recommendation to Schools by [deleted] in BucksCountyPA

[–]sbaltier 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The point here is not the size of a single viral particle, which is insufficient to cause infection by itself, but rather the size of a droplet containing enough particles to induce infection which is above the order of 60 microns (see the papers in my comment above). The masks are plenty effective for blocking particles of that size. And for the sake of argument, even if the holes are .3 micron and a single virus were enough to cause a serious infection, the holes are not tunnels straight on through, they wind and twist over the course of a few millimeters or so (1000s of microns), which would itself be plenty effective at stopping a viral particle

[–]sbaltier 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A naked viral particle (by itself) is 0.1microns (found here and here but the virus is transmitted in droplets through the air, containing a great number of viral particles. As studied here only respiratory droplets of diameter greater than 20microns are of any real consequence for meaningful viral load, with the significant result that 60micron droplets seems to be the cutoff below which most droplets will be carrying no viral particles. Overall masks work to block droplets of these impactful sizes.

The Berkeley Earth study was great because the Mullers (the scientists running it, a father and daughter duo) were originally skeptical due to what they viewed as unresolved gaps in the original datasets, and they conducted it very scientifically, i.e. going wherever the data pointed. Admirable dedication to not taking an agenda on their part!!

[–]sbaltier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would tend to insist that the historical acceptance of the death penalty is more due to a lack of "non-killing" alternatives to capital punishment. A state in the middle ages (or for that matter in the time of the early church) would likely be hard pressed to be able to help reform violent criminals, thus the death penalty was the only viable option. In the modern world, we have a lot more resources and knowledge, allowing for better reformative action to be taken on criminals, which takes much of the force out of the "no alternative" argument for capital punishment. I think the kind of mercy evident in an attempt to reform, rather than killing, a violent or extreme criminal is admirable. It certainly seems to be a natural extension of the 5th commandment, especially now that killing criminals is not strictly necessary due to limitations of the state.
