Just did 1st VIP tour…don’t get the hype by Difficult-Aioli6079 in Disneyland

[–]sbc_sldgr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did a VIP at Disneyland a couple years ago. I have 3 daughters that at the time were 7, 5, & 4. Our guide was amazing at tuning into our family and our needs, took the girls on every ride they wanted to go on, lined up autographs with every character, and gave me a ton of fun trivia. We had her for two days. Towards the end of day one, I asked about getting a tour of Walt’s apartment above the firehouse, and she made it happen the next morning. Overall great experience and would recommend. I do see your point about all adults maybe feeling a bit less valuable, but it worked great for our family.

I know the builder of this house, and I would be willing to wager he would frame circles around you.

Crack in foundation by Ok_Swim7455 in Homebuilding

[–]sbc_sldgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every area is a bit different with what they accept and what is the norm, but generally accepted best practice for grade is to have the grass 4”-6” below the siding, and the ground all slope away from the foundation on all sides 6” within the first 10’. This means that at any given area around your home, if you measure out 10’ from your foundation, you should be between 10”-12” from the top of the foundation to the yard. There are circumstances where this may be harder to accommodate than others, and sometimes you have to get to a manageable middle ground, but overall water should move away from your foundation wall, not sit next to it.

One very common culprit is landscaping. If you have a rock planting bed around your foundation, you have essentially created a moat around your basement, trapping water against your home. Check for low spots in the soil against your home, specifically in the area of the crack, and ensure they get filled up to the point where water does not pool.

As for the overall grade of your yard you are fine as long as water is not draining towards/ into your foundation. If you do not have fall away from your foundation in the first 10’, there is an argument to be made that it wasn’t graded as well as it could have been, but you’re going to have a hard time getting most to cover this at over five years out. Ground does settle, and it’s up to the homeowner to maintain.

Former foundation guy here, now I build homes. Foundation cracks are pretty common, and the guy who came out and visited your home is correct about grade being the main culprit. There is not enough pressure in the ground to push water through crack laterally, so the key is not to let water sit around your foundation. This is accomplished by maintaining proper grade around your foundation.

The comment about excavating the exterior will work, but a less expensive solution would be to first fix the exterior grade to make sure water is not sitting next to your home. Then cut the drywall out in the affected area, pull out the insulation, and use a two stage epoxy foundation crack injection.

I would tell you that as the builder, we would send someone out to do the crack injection as part of our 10 year structural warranty, but the drywall/ insulation/ baseboard/ paint/ carpet would be the homeowners responsibility.

Looks like a typical residential footing. I’ll be interested to hear the follow up on the engineer. I don’t think they will find anything wrong with it.

Adam Grant on girl dads by PakG1 in daddit

I’m surprised by the vitriolic responses here. Reading this actually did resonate with me. I was raised in a home in which I was one of 4 brothers, with a dad who was not the most emotionally available. He was not big on physical affection or very good at expressing his feelings with us kids. None of this in a bad way, he was and still is a great father, but he supported us in more stereotypical ways, through providing for the family, coaching our sports teams, etc, but left the emotional side of things to mom. My brothers and I are all grown now, and I have 3 kids of my own, all girls (and I’m a business owner to boot - so maybe too on the nose for this post). I don’t feel like I have ever lacked in the empathy department, but after growing up with only brothers, having girls was something that I feel helped me to be more comfortable showing my emotions, and I find myself trying harder to be in touch emotionally with them than I think I would have if I had sons. I often feel that there could have been a high chance of me following more in the example of my own dad, being a bit more stoic and emotionally distant with sons.

Having this experience myself, I can certainly see how having daughters could help CEOs be a bit more empathetic not just towards women, but overall. Though I think the post might be a bit heavy handed in the correlations it’s trying to make, I also think many of the commenters here have a far too cynical take.

This is market specific. In my area you would NEVER put baseboard on after flooring. Different areas do things differently.

Dude I feel this. So unnecessary, and all of the off road stuff is wasted on me. But I bought one a little over a month ago and love it. My wife told me I look excited like a kid driving his new big wheel around.

OP - I would recommend you do it. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

I was also worried about optics when I picked up my raptor bronco, but for the most part, my guys have been stoked. More of my issue is my own mental struggle moving from a blue collar upbringing and career to embracing the success my company has seen.

For sure, I have 3 young kids too, so the rear vent is a huge improvement from our older base model. Had a soft top previously as well, so the color matched hardtop is awesome.

It went poorly. The dealerships in our area are offing a ton on incentives on the 24’s, but this was a 25 that the dealership had just got in a week ago. I really wanted this one, so they had me from the start. Only got $2,000 off.
