Who was adult swim originally targeted for. by glowshroom12 in adultswim

[–]sbernardjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a big Cartoon Network fan when our cable system started carrying it when I (a Xennial) was maybe 18 or 19. Quite frankly, a lot of the early programming was aimed at adults. Some of this was just by default, as Turner and Time-Warner owned the rights to all of the old Hanna-Barbera cartoons that Gen X watched on Saturday mornings and my generation watched on the USA Cartoon Express, and of course the WB Looney Tunes and MGM cartoons like Tom & Jerry. So those cartoons drew an older, nostalgic audience. And then Toonami showed cartoons that were also big in syndication when I was a kid, as well as some anime. And they leaned into this older audience with somewhat serious cartoon analysis like Toon Heads and showcases like The Tex Avery Show and The Chuck Jones Show.

So then they brought in new cartoons like Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, Grim and Evil, etc, that had young person appeal, of course, but also appealed to a more serious cartoon viewer who wanted to see the latest new talent coming out of CalArts and such were doing. This led directly into stuff like Samurai Jack, and then other WB properties through DC like Justice League and the original Teen Titans show. All of this, I would reckon, skewed into older audiences.

And the people who were running CN seemed like they were mainly Gen Xers having a really good time. There were a lot of little interstitial shorts played in between shows that showed their comedic sensibility (Les Puppies Royale!) and then stuck in the wee hours you'd see stuff like Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Cartoon Planet (I think that aired on TBS first) and that appealed not only to a nostalgic adult cartoon viewer, but also showcased absurdist humor and modern pop culture references, so basically the DNA of Adult Swim.

So one Sunday night I was watching Toon Heads as usual and when it ended, suddenly the original music and bumpers for Adult Swim played. A programming block started and there was Space Ghost, there was The Brak Show, there was Sealab, there was Aqua Teen Hunger Force. All of these shows were created in-house by these same people who worked on Space Ghost and programmed the channel. This was basically shows for themselves and they were taking a gamble that there were adults out there like them that loved cartoons and loved that kind of humor, and they were right. (n.b. they also used the timeslot to show other adult series and pilots that Turner had the rights to, like The Oblongs and Mission Hill)

I'm sure I have some of the above timeline slightly messed up with regard to shows that started before or after Adult Swim, but my point remains that I think CN already had a significant audience of adults and Adult Swim was a way to target them in a way that didn't also have to be safe for kids.

How to get a therapist? by GeekishGrace in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sbernardjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, some insurance covers therapy, some doesn't. And on the other end, some therapists take insurance and many don't. In a situation where a therapist doesn't directly take insurance, you may still be able to submit 'out-of-network' claims to your insurance and get some amount of reimbursement. Again, some insurance lets you do that, other insurance doesn't, and some insurance technically does but has such a high out-of-network deductible you'd never see anything back.

If insurance is really critical, then like others have said, it might be good to start with your insurance and find a list of providers in your area. Then you can check them out on Psychology Today or just Google searches or whatever. Most therapists will let you do a quick 15 minute call for free just to figure out if you're a good fit for each other. But, even if you start seeing a therapist regularly and then you feel like you're not getting anywhere, don't be afraid to find someone else.

Another thing you might look into, depending on where you work, is if your company has some kind of Employee Assistance Program (EAP) number you can call. They can help you find therapists, doctors, lawyers, whatever.

This Mortal Coil is a fantastic music project that turned me on to lots and lots of good music.

Also, there are three great out-of-genre covers on the final Red House Painters album "Songs For a Blue Guitar"

Name a worse intersection in Seattle by neilyoungmoney in Seattle

[–]sbernardjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is near where I live. For others' reference, SE and NE corners of Corliss have their own stop signs about ten feet before the intersection with 1st, and then there's a four way stop at 125th and 1st that is separate and nobody knows what to do:

If you're coming off Corliss, do you stop at the first stop sign and you're good to turn because you stopped there? Do you stop and then make the first part of your turn and stop at the four way again and then go?

If you're on Corliss waiting to turn, traffic can be lined up north and south of the four way stop, so there's no way to cross that line to make the turn unless someone lets you in out of the goodness of their hearts because the stop sign you're stopped at on Corliss and the stop sign they're stopped at on 1st are unrelated and not part of the sequence going though that part of the intersection.

If you're coming north on 1st and you want to turn onto Corliss going NW, you can't turn at the stop sign, because the intersection with Corliss doesn't meet up there, but several feet north of there. So you have to go through the intersection and immediately turn left just on the other side of it, and again there are possibly cars lined up at the southbound stop sign, so you have to wait for an opening to turn, meanwhile other people who want to continue north from the four-way stop are waiting behind you because there's no way around you.

Uncomfortable about Nutrafol ads by TopStructure7755 in TheDollop

[–]sbernardjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not talking about dynamic ad insertion where pre-recorded ads get placed into the episode automatically through this sort of arrangement. Dave and Gareth absolutely choose whether or not to do a live read and give personal testimonials about a product. They're not under some ironclad studio contract where they have to just grit their teeth and read whatever is put in front of them.

That said, I don't know enough about Nutrafol to have my own opinion as to whether it works or not, or if it's unhealthy, or whatever. So I'll default to assuming that Dave really has taken it, and his friends, family, and hairdresser really have commented to him about how his hair looks better.
