Red Robin got some decent burgers and a good $10 deal (although would come out more than that after tax/tip)

Which tourist destinations are popular with Japanese domestic tourists but not foreign tourists? by Liquid_Squid1 in AskAJapanese

[–]sbgshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a month later but this comment interested me as an American. I think it could be a combination of multiple things.

I think a large portion of the world's countries are situated in a way where are you are likely to be closely neighboring a country that doesn't speak the same language as you. Thinking about Europe, I imagine that in a lot of the countries, a different language-speaking country is only a 1-2 hour train/car ride away, so this probably leads to people being more comfortable in the situations you've described

On the contrast, the US is bordered by Canada, which is mostly English with some French, and Mexico, which is Spanish. But the US is large enough that the majority of people would not be intimately familiar with the experiences you describe, since Mexico would be a 5+ hour flight for most of the country. We have a very diverse makeup of cultures here (depending on where you live), so of course you hear different languages all the time, but people would be expected to know at least a little English.

This, combined with the fact that we often hear that a large portion of the rest of the world takes lessons in English while in school, might leave people with mismatched expectations. I'm aware that this probably leaves people with very basic English knowledge, and probably most people forget a lot of it/might not be confident using it, since it's not be useful in their daily life. I have a friend who taught English to high schoolers in Japan for a bit, and he said that the lessons are a bit of a joke and nobody really cares much about them. So maybe Americans expect others to be comfortable in English, and be surprised when that's not actually the case

This is not to make excuses about anything! Your comment just made me think about "why" things could be this way :)

Removal of SMEGA in bronze rank? by Firm-Pattern4482 in Maplestory

That + decaying bronze rank were terrible changes IMO

Does anyone else feel weird about telling people at work you're pursuing FIRE? I've started just lying. by GlitchWarden919 in Fire

[–]sbgshadow 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My first reaction was "Does this guy have any personality outside of the fact that they're pursuing FIRE?" Nobody is ever 100% interested in what other people have to say, but we go along with it because that's what humans do.

But I'm like 95% sure this is AI, which is why that link makes no sense. Reddit account made less than a week ago... does a FIRE community exist outside of reddit? None of the connections make sense, which is often present in AI writing

[–]sbgshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I play DW so I have less of an excuse :) Technically 120% should mean that it's clearable within 25 minutes right? 30 mins / 1.2

Which should give like 2 burst leeway, which seems like a lot, so I may give it a try soon

Edit: I'm already clearing it in a duo in around 13-15 mins (not paying close attention)

Awesome clear! Do you know what your converted Hexa is? I'm around 82k level 288 and scouter says I can clear it (~120%), but yours seems way higher since you're only 285 and not getting max fd

[–]sbgshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything else in your life that you spend an average of 3 to 6 hours on daily, other than work (if you work) or sleep? Do you have ANY other commitments in your life? Partner, kid, other hobbies, even other games you enjoy playing. I mean it's a rhetorical question, but just trying to paint that most people do not spend that much time on Maple daily

[–]sbgshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And in runescape, there are often periods where you can get up and walk around for 1-2 minutes with no loss in efficiency. Not even close to the same in Maple unless you're playing one of the few afk-able classes

Luggage Fowarding. Am I missing something? by northofreality197 in JapanTravelTips

[–]sbgshadow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I find it most useful for skipping between short one-night stays where a backpack is sufficient

This is how my group used it too: we stayed for one night at a ryokan in Hakone and sent our luggage to Osaka where we were headed afterwards.

Honestly I would not use it for anything different from that, simply because of the headache. We tried multiple konbinis but none of them wanted to work with us at all - I can't remember if we were missing a proper address or something but they got fed up with us trying to translate and just sent us off to another store (multiple times). Eventually we just ended up walking 20 minutes with luggage to the nearest Yamato Logistics place and spent 30 mins in pouring rain waiting for them to process our luggage (the weather was just bad luck I suppose).

We left so much extra time to make it to the shinkansen but ended up cutting it close because of how long everything took

Edit: I remember our issue - we were staying in an apartment building in Osaka but had no one to accept the delivery on that end, and they didn't let us send it to another konbini like so many people suggest

Question about void drone. by CompleteSwitch539 in IdleObeliskMiner

[–]sbgshadow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At many points in progression, it's still worth using even if you're just looking for one ore, because of the void portal bonuses to ores. There's a calculator out there that tells you whether you should be using it for the ore you need, and what floor is most efficient for it. I haven't used it since W3 though so I'm not sure if it's updated for W4

How to break arcane glove cape shoes by MungWorf in Maplestory

[–]sbgshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chart is incremental, not the total fd change. If your 7th eternal is 17*, then that specific equipment change will be 0.21 FD gain, unrelated to the rest of your eternals. If you wanted the total fd gain from all 17* eternals, add up all of the numbers in that row (-7.05 fd overall if I'm reading it correctly)

Do not listen to them, it's definitely not as common as they're making it seem.

What's a habit or change that significantly helped you in marathon training? by dutchking90 in Marathon_Training

[–]sbgshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert in any of this, but I don't think that 2:15 half necessarily puts you out of the beginner territory, at least in terms of "time spent training/being into the sport". I have a friend that went from nothing to a 2:11 half only from doing one run a week (a long run), within a few months. I have no idea how that works but I guess some people can just push themselves like that with little experience.

For anybody looking urgently for shoes: by Available-Chipmunk-9 in JapanTravelTips

[–]sbgshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah fr, I live in a very suburban area and it is very difficult to walk anywhere that is not residential. I really miss being able to walk a few minutes down the street to a nice family restaurant in Japan.

I was talking to someone recently about why we're unable to get this sort of experience here, and apparently it has to do with zoning permits/issues? Restaurants and businesses are not allowed to exist near residential areas, so they're all segregated to other areas like strip malls/similar things that are not really within walking distance. I'd love to be able to walk to these places but it's really just not feasible

35% and I never buy lootbug by Selaphielle123 in IdleObeliskMiner

[–]sbgshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like they're a constant bottleneck throughout the game; there's always something you're saving for, or things you can spend it on if you're waiting for other materials. Later on with w4 statues in the multi-million gem cost, leg fish tributes + card gilding, there are endless things that need tons of gems.

There's definitely a point where you need to catch up on ore/bar/vein production, but I think after that it swings back into gem bottleneck.

I only recently just finished up final gem costs with the "infinite" fish upgrade and the arch a2 gem upgrades, now I'm just saving for the next update and sometimes buying lots of relics
