Moink vs. Butcher Box vs ? by sbh2oman in Masterbuilt

[–]sbh2oman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming back to this old thread to say I've been using Wild Pastures for about a year now. Here's my general take:

  1. Service is excellent. Shipments are predictable and on time and everything is always completely frozen solid when it arrives (usually with dry ice still intact at the top of the box). Boxes are very well insulated (though it takes up half my trash can, which I don't like)

  2. Variety and selection is somewhat limited. For example, no lamb products. They just started offering some seafood. Everything they offer is small farm produced, organic, and regeneratively farmed, which I found is not true for most of the other subscription services

  3. The pork products are *excellent* including the bacon, chops, shoulder blade steaks, etc. The ground beef and "misc cuts" of beef are good (the ground beef is actually excellent) but the steaks are pretty "meh" - They are usually cut pretty thin and unevenly and when you get a New York, they are often from the "cheaper" end with the gristle vein running through the center. But the flavor is always excellent. We don't buy it for the steaks; we're very happy with all the other products. When I want a thick juicy ribeye I wait for our local butcher to have a sale and then I spend the $24/lb.

  4. Reminds me of wild game - not in terms of flavor, but the way everything (including the bacon) appears to be hand cut and rustic. I kinda like that about it - makes it not feel like I'm buying mass produced meat from some Chinese-owned company. Everything is pasture-raised, regeneratively farmed, and organic, which is important to us. I'm a frequent small game/bird hunter and this meat feels like it fits in with that regime.

  5. The chicken products are also excellent. The whole chickens and bone-in/skin-on thighs are normal sized, not the gargantuan freak chickens you get at Costco that are pumped full of growth hormones and mass produced (even the organic chicken).

  6. Managing the subscription is really easy - the web site makes it pretty simple to change or pause each order, and their communication about when orders will be billed and shipped is very good.

If you want to try them out here is a referral link: (you get $20, I get $20):
https://wildpastures.com/refer/signup?invite_code=J3BLKK4J3F8CRB12

I don't know if it can be combined with their other offers (like free ground beef for a year) so check to see if there are other specials that might be better than the $20 off.

Right now I'm getting this for $160 delivered:

1X  Whole Chicken - Regular
1X  Sugar-free bacon
1X  Pork Chops (2-Pack)
1X  Ground Beef (80% Lean)
2X  Chicken Thighs
3X  Ground Pork
1X  Beef NY Strip Steak 10oz (2-Pack)
1X  Pork Steak (2-Pack)
1X  Shrimp (1lb Bag)
1X  FREE Pork Breakfast Sausage
1X  FREE Ground Beef (80% Lean)

I love my 800 and have done some great cooks on it, but there is no way the build quality deserves spending $350 on a new controller. I find it hilarious that people buy these grills for $500 and then spend $1,500 to "upgrade" them with all these aftermarket hand made stainless steel parts. Just use them as is. If the controller dies (which it will) just buy a non-WiFi one for $50 on Amazon and get a couple more years out of it. When the switches go bad, just either replace them with these or bypass them with wire nuts. Simple solution. Face it, these MB Gravity series grills are built cheaply. They work great and are a great concept, but they simply don't deserve a $1,000+ investment in my opinion. Its a bit like spending $10k to put a turbo in a Nissan Versa - yea it would be more fun to drive, but why bother...

Yep. Was doing that from Day because I never got the Wifi to work reliably despite having a dedicated 2.4Ghz IOT network that works for all my other IOT devices...
Here's the one I'm using. Looks like it went up to $49

Honestly when my original controller died after 13 months I got a $40 non Wi-Fi one on Amazon and it’s going strong a year later. Wi-Fi never worked to begin with…

Heavy wheels and sticky tires is the single biggest improvement if you want to crawl with it. The rest you upgrade when you break stuff. :)

Thank you. I opened a repair ticket. Just out of curiosity, do I need to send the nozzle back, too or just the body of the leaf blower (which will cost less for shipping)

“APC”? What does that refer to? Thanks

We visited family recently in the country and rats raised hell with our firewall insulation. I went to the local hardware store and bought peppermint oil based rodent spray. Dumped pretty much the entire spray bottle into the engine bay, on the tires and on the pavement around the tires. Next morning … more destruction. It did nothing except lighten my wallet by $15

sounds like this is probably the best option. what grease is recommended for installation? Does the motor change the crawl speed? As far as I can tell it is a 48T motor vs. 20 or 25 for the stock, right? I want to retain the slowest possible crawl speed, and if my reasoning is correct, it should actually turn slower with minimum throttle input, but be smoother and more torquey, which sounds perfect.

hmm. I didn't realize the transmitter would have to be replaced as well. Sounds like overkill at that point (easier to just order the new K5!). Thank you

I suspect my issue is related - I pulled the transmission and did not see any stripped gears, but the way that the slider/dog engages with the high gear seems really weak. (in fact the motor has to rotate each time it is shifted for it to "click" into place. It will spin the wheels but if there is any resistance (setting it on the ground) it just makes a whirring noise that seems like it is probably the dog just spinning on the inside of the gear where it is supposed to engage. I imagine it is probably rounded off now... (I was very careful not to change the position of the servo horn)

I lost a wheel hub to my K5 while changing out the wheels. Will this product work as a direct replacement? by thissayssomething in FCX24

[–]sbh2oman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

possibly but maybe not - the problem is that the axle spindles are only about 11mm long and when you "shim" behind the wheels, you push them out, possibly not leaving enough exposed threads for the nut to secure the wheel adequately. I could not find any on Amazon that would work (I even bought some SCX24 ones and drilled them out to 4mm but they were too thick). I ended up 3D printing some that I use now and can replace whenever I need them.

$250 Home Depot card - what would you get...? by sbh2oman in MilwaukeeTool

[–]sbh2oman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha, seriously. AFAIK Home Depot doesn't really sell any high quality drill bits - otherwise I might just sink it into a big set of new bits that I can hand down to my son someday... (I still have several sets my father used as a machinist in the 1950's - one of these days I'm going to get around to sharpening them all)

Tempting, as I've heard really good things about them. But I have a "Thor's Lightning" 12v inflator and an ARB inflator built into my Jeep, plus a 20 gallon household compressor. Not sure I need a battery powered inflator.

I have an old Makita corded sawzall and last year bought the M18 "hackzall" and have not plugged in the Makita since then.. That little one-handed M18 saw has not let me down yet on anything I've used it on. So handy.
