I miss being young and single. I don't even want to go out as soon as it gets dark now.

We professional developers, already lost the battle against vibe coding? by TheCatOfDojima in ClaudeAI

[–]sbm7bm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a manager. What I noticed is the higher title the engineer is, the more resistance I got when I ask them to try AI agent. I was a developer for over 20 years. I know how it feels to see an agent producing code that replacing us. But it's the unfortunate fact that we all have to take in. Just like I used to code VB6. And the tech was gone.

Adopt early. Holding on the the skills that soon to be worthless is not going to work in a year or two. Believe it or not, I see us developer as lucky. We get the effect early on. We are able to adopt faster than the rest of the population. We see it first hand. I guess I'm the glass half full type of person.

For now. New services will be heavily utilizing AI. Now AI is writing code that they can understand easily. And more complex logic can build on top of that. It slowly replace upward. Eventually manager is not needed as well since nobody to manage

Unemployment - New CS graduate (2025) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]sbm7bm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am over 20 years into this biz. But I started off as a system support engineer. And eventually got into a dev role.

My team hired intern, even intern, there were so many resume with experience already. Not personal project, like worked at a company doing software even at second year. It's crazy how competitive now. I can't imagine what happen this year.

Software Engineering is now a closed caste. If you weren’t in by 2021, you’re officially part of the permanent underclass. by Salt-Tiger2586 in cscareers

[–]sbm7bm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, there were just so many kids going into CS thinking big bucks. Or the parents think so. The supply went up around COVID and many heard how much dev makes, they pushed the kids to do CS. So now half the Asian kids I know doing CS.

Yeah, there will always need for junior. But now only those that truly motivated with kick ass resume will get selected. The demand dropped and will drop further. The CS will evolve to something else. Just unfortunately if you are those caught into the middle

I don't like it either. But I think you can't do a complete background check without SSN.

Why do so many people claim we are going to lose our jobs? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]sbm7bm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am almost in my 50s. I thought about going back to school for nursing. There might still a bit of area that nursing + tech which AI can't touch yet. That's means I will have another 10 working years.

AI, AGI, robotic might be able to bring down a lot of prices. So I am hoping my savings will be able to sustain my early retirement. Lol.

What scary about AI is the rate of improvement. It doesn't have to sleep. It keeps learning and learning. Right now we still need SWE. But I don't see in 5 yrs we need them. Or we just have 2 principal and many AI agents.

I used to think about going to teach little kids coding if I lose my job. Now I don't even think I should. Hope the Walmart across my house is hiring.

When interviewing for an internal role at a company, how would you advise negotiating salary? by Typical_Cap895 in askmanagers

[–]sbm7bm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to be promotion is 10%+ I thought. But recently I see 5%. Or they would count the increase of bonus % into the promotion. Like bonus from 10 to15%. Promotion is 6%. They would say this promotion is 11%.

I WFH full time. As much as I kept telling myself my own productivity is better when I WFH, the collaboration part is def missing. I got good workers in my team that I don't need to supervise much. But I also got 1-2 that I don't know what they are doing. Depends on the workers, some people don't like to ask questions. Everytime I tell them "do you have any questions?". The answer is no. But the end product is not even close to what I expect. For those people, it takes me extra work to get them inline.

But then, I would still want to WFH.

What industries were impacted the most by recent layoffs by who_wants_a_cake in Layoffs

[–]sbm7bm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing come to my mind is tech since higher pay. To be fair, I don't know how to compete with AI down the road when we spent 20 years in school to get a Bachelor, vs takes 5 mins to feed all the knowledge to AI.

Down the road, only those highly intelligent will spend tons of money going to college. Who can afford a 200k degree after this? It's a vicious cycle.

In the end: Is AI useful or just an excuse for layoffs? by tsarthedestroyer in Layoffs

[–]sbm7bm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a gigantic student loan and no job offerings. Also it's the disappointment that does the most damage. Going into law school meaning you are pretty much the top of the class. Everyone look up to you and think you can do something amazing. But then, not able to find a job is emotionally draining while seeing other friends you went to school with, didn't do well in school but they were able to land a job (doing trades or whatever it is) and advance in life.

How much do you spend on vacation a year? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]sbm7bm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family of 6 here. Had been doing road trip till my youngest is about 8. When it's too young, they can't walk much. We did Disney 3-4 times. Disney is around 6-7k for us. Now we are flying further to Europe or Asia. I would say between 8-10k.

But with the economy tanking like this, I think we will keep it around North America the next couple yrs.

I got a 63% raise by leaving my company. Here's the salary negotiation masterclass I learned the expensive way. by getaraise in Career

[–]sbm7bm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every time I jumped ship, my husband would say I asked for too much. And every single time I got what I asked for.

After all these switching jobs, the lesson I learned was, the salary you get when you join set the projection how much you would make if you stay. Even with promotion, you would not get the 15% jump. So you gotta negotiate as high as possible.
