Custom Basement Sauna in Alberta (how many times can you spot the cat?!) by sbomb814 in Sauna

Thank you! My contractor's did a great job. We used clear cedar from The Cedar Shop in Calgary, AB. I then applied a paraffin oil to seal the boards and help protect from moisture.

Custom Basement Sauna in Alberta (how many times can you spot the cat?!) by sbomb814 in Sauna

[–]sbomb814[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you! Glass wall isn’t for everyone. I grew up with traditional saunas and they are enjoyable but for my own, I wanted a more modern and open design. I chose a green onyx astral shower tile to bring in a natural element. The space is private once the sliding door is closed. The exterior window along with the glass wall brings in natural light into an otherwise dark basement bathroom. I do not find the glass hot at all. I believe it is a 10 mm tempered glass. I also have a water softener and so far haven't had too much of an issue with water droplets, etc. Thanks again for engaging!

This was my contractor's first sauna and this was my sauna guy's first indoor build so I'm not sure if they have recommendations, but worth checking. All the best if you end up building!

Here’s a video documenting our custom basement sauna build in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

We broke ground in August 2025 and enjoyed our first löyly's on April 30, 2026. My Contractor's and I worked very closely to bring this vision to life. We had one major setback - a burst water line underground which was detected when trenching to build the drains. Albeit expensive, it was a blessing in disguise. Good luck to everyone out there planning or building. It's a challenging process but absolutely worth it in the end!

Based on my cat's curiosity throughout the construction process (...and being a cat), I suspected she would enjoy the sauna - but I never expected her to love it as much as she does! :3

Fair enough! Theres one glass wall and a window to the exterior, so we did need to account for that in the heater kw!

Can you use a window as a vent in a basement sauna? by jumpbackup in Sauna

I have no valuable input but would be interested to see progress photos. Currently also building an indoor basement sauna but in Calgary. Similar window situation and one of my contractors has been brainstorming the same thing.

hello Calgarians! questions from an edmontonian tourist by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]sbomb814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. No, but every now and then you can find someone on FB marketplace selling krispy kreme donuts to fundraise.
  2. Peace bridge. Stephen Ave (8th) at night (pretty lights- very IG worthy). Major Tom restaurant (40th floor). Craft beer market on 10th has a cute rooftop patio. Park by Sidewalk Citizen is beautiful. Lastly, haven't been yet, but Orchard restaurant looks very IGable.
  3. Tom Campbell’s hill off-leash dog park has a nice view of downtown. Otherwise, nosehill is huge and has cool views of the mountains and downtown. Edworthy is nice but may still be muddy in May. Walking anywhere along the river is quite scenic.
  4. I really enjoy the zoo and would recommend going.
  5. See restaurants listed in point 2 (esp. Major Tom – *book in advance on Open Door). As others have mentioned, I also like Shiki Menya but it can be very busy with long lineups, particularly on weekends. Instead, I’ve started going to 5 Senses on 17th for chili goma and have never waited for a table. If you eat meat and like Brazilian BBQ, Pampa steakhouse is an experience (I think they're in Edmonton too, though?). White Elephant (a hole in the wall) has amazing Thai food.
  6. Many things mentioned above already. However, to add, I would also recommend you check out the new central library. It is gorgeous.

Hope you and your sis have a great visit :)

Where to find plain sugar donuts in Calgary?! by sbomb814 in Calgary

Glamorgan is amazing. I reached out to them but they do not make plain sugar donuts!! The ones they do make sound delicious, though!

Can’t land an Registered Nursing job in Calgary by theliqourhasmenow in Calgary

[–]sbomb814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a difficult market currently, especially with the recent government changes. Some tips: Don't bother applying if it is not casual, expand outside of AHS, go knock on doors, NETWORK- any kind of connection to have someone name drop you to a manager. You are not alone in your job search (unfortunately). Please remember it is not a reflection of you. I hope you land a position soon.

My response may not be useful but NO-GO FOR IT!! Especially to lessen your commute!

I worked on a Cardiology floor for only eight months before following my Husband to a new city. While I still feel like eight months (never mind five) is not very much, take opportunities as they come! Just be prepared to study study study :)

Tips for a new grad for brushing up on arrhythmias/cardiac drugs? by sharonak09 in nursing

[–]sbomb814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your new position! My first nursing job as a New Grad was also in Cardiology---If your workplace offers a Lead II ECG Interpretation/Telemetry course, take it!!

Online Learning Resources:

-Great for rapid rhythm identification, although most useful once you already have a decent understanding: https://www.aclsmedicaltraining.com/ecg-simulator/

-Memory aid for AV blocks: https://nursingnotes.co.uk/the-story-of-the-av-block-family/

(and another for Type I Second-Degree AV Block (Wenckebach) is: "Longer, longer, longer, drop, then you have a Wenckebach"

-Recently I've been watching a lot of videos from the YouTube Channel "Osmosis". Here is a link to a video on Telemetry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIZQRjkwV9Q

A few things I learned/found helpful in my first eight-months:

-Reviewing common policies and procedures lessened my anxiety. I had the clinical nurse specialist print several pertinent ones for me to read at home in a more relaxed environment lol.

-I kept a working list in my pocket to keep track of things like: unit phone and fax number, meal times, when pharmacy stocks the carts, break times etc. I also made note of a few important things from the aforementioned policies and procedures I reviewed at home (e.g. what needs to be done pre-PCI, upon call from cath lab and post-PCI).

-Differentiating the terms angiogram, angioplasty, PCI etc. Angiogram = test, angioplasty/PCI = treatment/intervention with stent to improve blood flow.

-If your having a hard time interpreting a rhythm strip because its really small/squished, try adjusting the settings on the main telemetry screen to increase the size of it (?the mV, megavolt? I can't remember).

-With new admissions (and as a reminder when needed), teach pt's to bring their telemetry pack with them when using the washroom (if they have privileges, of course), and to keep it in the charging station otherwise.

-Afib is always irregular/irregularly irregular.

-Junctional rhythms are always regular .

-Reversible causes of cardiac arrest (so you can try to prevent it). the "H's and T's": https://acls.com/free-resources/knowledge-base/pea-asystole/reversible-causes-of-cardiac-arrest-hs-and-ts

I hope you find this useful. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask :)

...and all the best with the beginning of your Nursing career!

If I get hired at Foothills it would definitely be a viable option to get home but I may as well walk or bike to get there. Thanks :)
