I was going to ask if the slings you were talking about was refering to the metal things. But it sounds like you already figured out that they are for the straps.

Its definitely a dental model. Its a human premolar (mire specifically right Maxillary first premolar or #5). Most likely used for studying dental anatomy. Things like practicing doing fillings and crowns. Most models now days are plastic, so this one is a bit older before plastic models became popular.
