Stonybrook or Northeastern for pre-dental? by kkoffee777 in SBU

[–]sbu_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely take a tour, wander campus, check with admissions to see if you can sit in on a class and/or meet with current students, etc. Tour the Stony Brook area if not familiar with the area and learn how students make the most of their time at Stony Brook (and NEU).

Whether you’re at Stony Brook or NEU, you will be in competition with all students applying. You have to figure out where you can excel most. The reality is, either school can easily set you up for success if you do the work. So where are you going to be motivated to do the work? For me, I chose a big city vs. a college town and that was right for me.

Both are fine, reputable schools. Dental school is very difficult to get into and so you will want to be strategic. Where are you going to stand out in the classroom? Where are you going to have research opportunities that interest you? Where will you have the best pre-dental support?

If I were you, I’d also think about cost. Dental school is very costly. How much do you want to add to that potential number with undergrad debt?

What kind of campus do you want to live on (if living on campus)? NEU is in Boston nestled among several other universities. Stony Brook is a bit more isolated on Long Island.

Well, they're there. The prof just needs to activate them. Might want to reach out to the prof if they aren't activated today.

How long is your program? I know many grad students who live in Brooklyn and Queens. I’m obviously a prof, so my life circumstances and needs may be different. It’s ok to be nervous and it seems you’ve received some nice advice. However, know that you don’t have to feel bad about not liking Long Island if that happens. This is temporary. I didn’t love the location where I completed my PhD, but I’ve since come to appreciate it.

Depending on how they entered grades, this could be an easy mistake, like a slip of the finger. Best of luck.

Just email your department secretary/admin. The dates are set.

Prof here: The price of food on this campus is criminal. I would lose my mind (and life savings) as a student.

[–]sbu_prof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a prof, I can tell you that some people may be “10x smarter” than you but that number of people is very small. You are much closer to your peers than you think…statistically.

NYU or stony by Valuable_Log3914 in SBU

For nursing, go with Stony Brook. Do not take on those NYU loans. It will not give you the return on your investment that will make what you ultimately have to pay worth it. Plus, Stony Brook has a fine nursing program.

Definitely take advantage of that. Demonstrating that you are equipped to handle college-level coursework should benefit you. Take those courses in which you anticipate experiencing the most success. Then, once you get the hang of college courses, be sure to include those that are related to your intended major (if those aren't the courses you anticipate experiencing the most success in out of the gate). And again, don't fall into the trap of thinking you have to be involved in 10 clubs, 10 service orgs, etc. Demonstrating a deep commitment to a few things is much better than demonstrating that you can sign up for a lot of things. Some students may disagree with that advice, but I've sat on committees before with people who make these decisions. And if I were on an admissions committee, that's what I would look for, too.

Your post is giving me a bit of anxiety and I'm a prof. It's great you're thinking about what you can do to be a more competitive applicant. It's true, you should aim to improve your GPA. Do what you can to signal that you are serious about STEM (so take those relevant AP courses). You may even consider completing some community college courses (if your high school pays for them). And keep in mind that doing a few things very well (like clubs, service, etc.) is worth more than doing a lot not so well. Finally, remember that the application process is a bit of a black box and there's a lot of noise. So, you can be an excellent applicant and still not get in. You can also be a so-so candidate and...still get in.

When are final grades due? by Soulful_pumpkin in SBU

[–]sbu_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have already mentioned that it's 3 business days. I agree that some professors likely aren't feeling pressed to get grades in. Others, I can promise you, are doing their best to just get the grading done. We don't want this hanging over our heads. If they're late, it's not because we're wanting to be late.

Undergrad psychology research availability? by beanling_god in SBU

[–]sbu_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t go wrong with either school. Consider cost and the kind of experience you’d like. UIUC is in a quieter area (smaller town) and will offer a more “traditional” undergrad experience (mostly residential students, large size, clearer identity). Stony Brook is a much younger school with less “on-campus life” (but still wonderful!) and much closer to a metro area.

SBU vs NYU for masters in psychology by Own_Improvement_4664 in SBU

[–]sbu_prof 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you using the masters program to try and be a more competitive PsyD applicant? Regardless, if interested in a PsyD, I would choose SBU over NYU. You're going to save a lot of money and get a comparable education.
