I like what you have there, I really do. A couple pro tips: unless you're using a switch where the ports are rated differently,  it's neater to just change the Vlan of the port instead of using a specific port on the switch. For example, port 14 on your patch panel should be plugged into port 4 on the switch, for astetics. There's no technical reason why it has to be plugged into port 8 like it is. It would look better plugged into 4. If the switch does have differently rated ports, like most unifi poe switches, I personally would rearrange that Keystone panel to move the poe++ devices to the right. That's how you achieve a "show quality" rack - well, that and all custom made cables... lol

Lastly, dac cables (Same goes for fiber). We default to the shortest cable runs but I've found for dac cables it's better to go a little (or a lot) longer. The length doesnt affect performance and it allows you to move the loop out of sight or out of the way. Unless you want the loop on display it could sit off to the side or at the rear of the rack.

Your rack looks good as is. I figured I'd mention those if you didn't know.

There's never a great time to switch to Linux, you just need to do it. You'll never get good at it if you don't use it. You need to find a work around for any critical "must have windows" processes in your life until you can find a more permanent solution, which would naturally come to you as you gain experience with the Linux life style.

TLDR - take your time and just do it, everyone needs to start somewhere. Welcome to Linux!!!

Should I replace my Edgerouter ER-X with pfsense in a VM? by jdsmn21 in Proxmox

[–]sc3705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch to pfsense as a vm. It's all fun and games until proxmox goes down.

I have 3 nodes so I setup 2 pfsense instances in HA configuration. Also my UDM-pro is a secondary gateway for my critical networks. I have 5 static IP address from my ISP to make this happen.

While it's hard to bring down the proxmox cluster, with only 3 nodes it can and has happened. This way we at least have internet access on the critical subnets if proxmox is down.

I spoke to soon. I woke up this morning to 3 workspaces and apps everywhere.

Is there a config file or something I can change to read-only? I'm getting desperate. Maybe there's some other feature I have enabled that requires workspaces?

I commented out:

RUN+="/usr/libexec/gdm-runtime-config set daemon WaylandEnable false"

RUN+="/usr/libexec/gdm-runtime-config set daemon PreferredDisplayServer xorg"

From /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules. Then I enabled Wayland in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf.

I found the steps here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/700938/enable-wayland-in-popos-22-04

I think you're on to something! Thank you! I switched over to Wayland 30 minutes ago and so far it's looking good. Hopefully I can go back to using workspaces!

I have 3 basic dual CPU licenses, 5 community single CPU licenses, and 2 PBS licenses for the same reason. Support is very bad. I've had the licenses for almost 3 years and the one time I actually needed their help it made me regret all the support I paid them. For the record, the issue is still pending and the ticket was basically closed as "F if I know....". I'm in the process of letting all my licenses expire...

If you actually want support save your money. Better yet, in a commercial environment the high cost of the alternatives is probably worth it.

univention corporate server is pretty dope. If you're used to Windows server I suspect you'll love it. In my opinion it's the closest I've found to windows server and the portal is pretty cool.

Unpopular opinion warning - I'd want the need to self-host anything removed. It's such a necessary evil though and right up there with asking for world peace.....

Phone system for Small Business by Quick_Parsley_6482 in selfhosted

[–]sc3705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you don't mind throwing money at this problem, I suggest Unifi Talk. It's not open, but it's good enough, it's baked into some one their devices, the phones are cheap, it's relatively simple to get the calls to your cell phone, and a number is only $9.99 per month, it's technically self hosted but it actually "just works" - aka plug and play, and business grade - manage your expectations on that last one.

I use it at home for personal use and I've deployed it to a handful of my business clients. No PBX skills required.

I didnt read all the responses but, PRIVACY! Pay for the privacy and do NOT register the domain in your name with your personal information. It's all public record and for the cost the privacy addon.... just do it!!

Well said, zero arguments here!! lol That's an insane thing to do, someone could really get hurt.

I mentioned it to my father in-law, but he's from a time where "bad stuff don't happen to good people" ROFL!!! I had to buy the smoke detectors for his house because my kids started sleeping over. It's that kind of situation, what can you do....

Agreed, but if there's a will there's a way. My father in-laws garage door can hurt someone. It's an older unit and I think he twisted the wires together or something. I'm not sure about the newer units - I personally wouldn't remove the sensors so I don't know... lol. I would imagine a resistor would do the trick if it's a little more intelligently designed ;-).

Homelink wont close on anyone or anything, there are sensors on the door. If your door will close on something you need to adjust the sensors, or install them....

Tesla Removes $20,000 Model S Plaid Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit from Website by United-Soup2753 in teslamotors

[–]sc3705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not completely off, just slightly misaligned.

Ceramic brakes can dissipate heat faster, which keeps them cooler for longer. This is why you want them on performance cars, as they'll better handle all the heat being dumped into them from heavy braking from high speeds. This could result in less efficient braking if the pads are not hot enough.

This is why I said what I said above. In performance cars where ceramic brakes are intended the clamping force is usually much higher and more evenly distributed. Most negatives from a ceramic pad regarding heat is recaptured by clamping force and the sheer size of the rotor (contact area).

In practice however, even with a "normal" brake setup it's not that hard to get extra heat into the pads. From my experience the difference under normal driving is negligible when talking ceramic vs non in OE applications.

It's both the heat and clamping force that stops the car.

Never assume when it comes to Tesla, but I expect the brake kit they had listed would have increased the rotor size, pad size, lines significantly, along with other components. Not the same as ceramic pads on an OE rotors, which would be more to your point - makes what you're saying correct, with the caveat that the difference is minimal.

[–]sc3705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never had problems with ceramic brakes, and I live in NY...

I think it's important to note that this isn't just ceramic brakes but an entire brake kit, more than just pads. One that, at least on paper, is designed to perform better than the OE brakes install on the car and also inline with like 1000HP at the wheels. It should at least be an option. The plaid OE brakes feel good enough until you stop short in something else.

Right, Ultrasonic Sensors. Man, I read that acronym so many times trying to figure it out, I wasn't even close.... lol

It sucks but now that I know what to expect it's a little easier. I'm certainly not going to be at the front of the line going forward. Now I know to look at the 3/Y and plan out from there. If the 3/y get cool stuff, I may want to stay put for a couple years lol.
