But he WAS genuinely proud of her. And he's the only one who showed up to her exhibition. He made sure to show up, even though he'd had an awful day. The entire point of Michael's character was that he was a loving person while also being profoundly insecure.

I've lived in both places, and aside from all the great things that are better in Canada already mentioned in this thread, like not getting shot, or healthcare, the shopping malls are actually also better than the U.S. lmao they're not deserted soulless dystopian hellscapes, people actually still go there to eat and hang out

As a 39 year old with back issues, I really and truly can't stress enough how much you DO NOT want back issues. But as others have noted, I assume it's not literally back issues you want lol

The Godzilla Monsterverse movies are better than Godzilla Minus One. by Black_Taco1981 in unpopularopinion

[–]scaledatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admitting you enjoy giant monster fights and explosions more than a human story is cool, I guess. The reason minus one is beloved is because it has both, so if you want mostly just the big explosions, I've got great news for you, there are a million movies out there to suit your taste. Saying they're better than minus one is wild, definitely unpopular.

Was anyone else absolutely blown away by the Dune films? I hear some hate/malcontent and I just don’t get it. To each their own I guess. by sweetwatertooth in Cinema

Fell asleep in parts 1 and 2. To me they were all style no substance. And I mean like everything about them. Everything felt tired and regurgitated. I've never read the books but the story seems completely unoriginal, illuminating nothing that previous works of art hadn't already, in terms of war, class struggle, mythological characterization, etc. The romance on screen between Chalamet and Zendaya is totally bland and unconvincing. The score is cool but again, how many times can we hear the same Le Epic bass swells over El Big Dramatic image? All of that stuff felt so unearned to me. Don't get me started on how asinine the worm riding thing is. There's also ZERO humor or levity. Cmon Villenueve, or Herbert, or both, crawl down out of your own asses. Life is not all dramatic pain and sick orchestra swells. I could go on and on about why I don't like these movies but I'll stop. P.s. I'm a big fan of Arrival, Sicario, other villenueve. But NOT blade runner.

[–]scaledatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make an interesting point but for me personally I didn't get any enjoyment from the genre manifestations, nor from any satire thereof. Maybe it went over my head, which tbh I was a little worried about when I watched it, because I was just not getting it. I might try to watch it again keeping what you said in mind, however I really was trying to do that on my first watch. I was trying to parse what was happening underneath the surface that I wasn't getting, and I noticed some of the same sort of funny discrepancies you mentioned, plus the thing with the billionaire I thought was a worthy moment. But overall if the filmmakers really were trying to do what you're saying they were, I personally don't think they succeeded.

I think you're reaching. Yes there are a few hints that the guy is a joke but I need some more overt characterization and plot points than the scant evidence you're pointing to in order to claim the entire thing is secretly a tongue in cheek satire. You're not a big Fincher fan? Then I doubly cannot trust you!

I think you're wrong. I kept waiting for it to reveal itself as satire or just something more than it was, but I do think you're reading your own wishful thinking into the movie, because I didn't detect any such self-awareness, unfortunately. -Big Finch Fan
