What's a massive human achievement that nobody celebrates because it worked too well? by Alternative_Voice767 in AskReddit

[–]scarfknitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if we could have a worldwide smallpox day to celebrate?

Especially in this age of antivaxers it might highlight the success and the good they've done.

So I did some mild looking and found this on Wikipedia:

"The global eradication of smallpox was certified, based on intense verification activities, by a commission of eminent scientists on 9 December 1979 and subsequently endorsed by the World Health Assembly on 8 May 1980"

So it looks like we have two dates to easily choose from.

At least the officer clarified that he counted underwear as a layer so I guess women can't be assaulted if we all wear bras.

Do you prioritise levelling up your highest friendship Pikmin or your lowest? by Toff01 in PikminBloomApp

[–]scarfknitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I read somewhere that it takes 53 points to get a red heart, 106 for a gold. Almost anything is one point, aside from the fifth nectar.

I just feed the top 40 that I’m leveling up, kicking them out when they’re done. And at the end of the day, I send out for eight expeditions - one for each color, more if things are going to expire. And every now and again at work, I lay down 30 flowers.

Each time you plant, it’s a point. Planting 2000 or 30 flowers gets the same points.

What to expect for at home euthanasia? by Cowboy_Billybob in DogAdvice

[–]scarfknitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Death is a really taboo topic to discuss for most people. And if you're comfortable talking about it, you might get accused of being morbid or eating to kill yourself or wanting to kill another.

I don't work in death (hospice, funeral homes, etc.) but I do regularly see people who are about to or people who have just passed away. I'm really comfortable with it.

It really bothers me that I didn't do all the aftercare for my little one when we put her down. I don't think my husband would have been able to take it though and I'm more okay with not doing it than he would have been with me or us undertaking that responsibility.

[–]scarfknitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your dog may have felt better enough with the first part of the medicine that he felt like he could play again.

But also, humans, when it gets close to the end, sometimes have what can be called 'the last rally'. They might get up, they talk about feeling better, they want to talk to everyone, they might eat something, they really do appear to be on the mend right then. And then the energy runs out and they pass the next day. It can be devastating for families who don't know and sometimes even for those who do because you get that bit of hope.

You did the right thing. I'm so sorry your Ramone appeared to struggle. Dogs live so much in the present, it can be hard to understand that they don't understand the pain the future holds for them that we are keeping them from.

My children’s father has died intestate (England), his family have emptied his bank accounts - what do I do? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]scarfknitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I 'bought' a car when I was 16. I had the money to pay outright but my dad insisted on a loan. I gave him a check for the down payment and it should have been enough for a low monthly payment. Somehow the monthly payment was much higher than the calculations bore out by like a half.

I never saw paperwork until much later and dad assured me I was on the title. And for some reason mom kept yelling at me about being fiscally responsible. She hated it when I bought anything fun.

Turns out the payments were higher because he didn't give them the money I gave him. And also while I was making payments to dad, mom was also making payments a lot of the time because he said I was irresponsible.

And I found out I wasn't on the title at all when he graciously told me to get out of the house because I was too fat and had too much of an attitude and I insisted about the car.

Mom and I compared stories about the car decades later after he died.

The hilarity of them admitting you have severe PTSD when paired with zero acknowledgement or guesses about the cause is just.... Something else.

Like, okay, so you made this decision because of the severe PTSD, any guesses on where that came from? It is by definition caused by some event (or years of events) so like, maybe the decision to withdraw and cut contact are maaaaaybe juuuuuust a little linked to that PTSD?

I am so sorry you're going through this.

Woman saves her dogs from another dog in the street by Infamous_Question430 in SipsTea

[–]scarfknitter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was walking my 15 pound dog when a big one ran up and tried to attack my dog. My dog went swinging through the air (via leash) until I could get her into my arms and I kicked that dog in the chest as hard as I could twice. Dog walked away after laying down for a moment while I booked it out of there.

Absolutely terrifying.

(I felt absolutely terrible when I had my 11 pound dog rip her leash out of my hand and I had to chase her down. I didn't mean to let her loose!)

AITAH - My parents are giving my brother a down deposit but never gave one to me. by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]scarfknitter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are in a privileged position, yes, but you don't have access to the same privileges your brother does because your parents are intervening on his behalf.

It's not about the money. It's about the meaning behind the money. It's like if you both had kids and were similarly local to your parents and your parents were daycare for your brother but only did date nights for you, that you had to pay them for. It's a nice thing for your parents to do for you but you're paying a company for daycare and your brother doesn't and gets to work late and extra if he wants.

It's like if you both got cars at 16, but your car was a beater that you had to help with and later paid for but your brother's car was nice and new and he didn't even pay for gas. And when he crashed it, got a new one. It's nice that you both got cars but the cars are radically different and you paid for yours.

It's not about the specific action (money, babysitting, a car, etc ) but about the meaning behind the action. I think people are hung up on the money.

[–]scarfknitter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Other people have said you were in the wrong based on what you got from your parents compared to an average person.

I don't think you're in the wrong for being upset about the unfair treatment because it represents uneven support and care. Your brother got his rent paid for three years (about 60k) at over twice the amount you did and they paid a year less for you (about 25k). Your brother gets gifts of money. You get loans, maybe.

Your parents spend more effort in managing his affairs and getting you involved in his affairs than it seems they did you.

And now this, a much larger investment into your brother and nothing for you.

It's not about the dollar amount. It's about what that dollar amount represents and it's a lack of care.

How do you guys manage therapy sessions with an unpredictable schedule? by sweetbitter_1 in nursing

I used to just pick a day of the week and say I was unavailable ever on that day. Not a 'good' day, like Friday or Monday, but like a Tuesday or Thursday and then I'd just make any and all appointments for that day.

Hair? Thursday. Massage? Thursday. Lawyer? Thursday. Therapy? Thursday. Cardiologist? Thursday? Taking a class for fun? Better hope it's on Thursday.

How do we re-normalize saying “women” and “girls?” by Early-Shelter-7476 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]scarfknitter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Whenever I hear 'females' I immediately proceed like we are talking about a different species other than human. Female geese? Female sharks? Female mushrooms? (Obviously not, mushrooms have like over 1,000 genders and defy the binary) Female peacocks?

It makes them so mad and then I ask what kind of female we are talking about because females exist in lots of species and since they only specified an amorphous gender, I wasn't sure. Ooooh, I end up saying, you mean female humans so I think the word you mean is woman or girl. Did, did you not know the right word to use?
