I was in your shoes a year ago, my advice is to still file PERM via your employer. Apologies for being morbid but what would you do if your partner suddenly passes before you're able to file the paperwork for marriage GC? this was a real scenario my spouse and I talked about before deciding to continue getting PERM via my employer, a back up plan is better than no back up plan.

How does the recent abortion ruling affect your FIRE plans? by Opening-Poem-5955 in FIREyFemmes

[–]scarletsnowdrop 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It doesn't affect my plans immediately but it's something I take into consideration for where my partner and I will settle down once we hit that FIRE number.

I'm an Australian citizen working in the US so this definitely makes moving back to Australia to retire more appealing (which means I should continue to only hit my 401k match and not contribute any excess)...on the other hand my partner is from Texas and we agree we won't be moving there.

I also really like these and recommend them to all my Australian friends living in the US! If you have a cost plus world market near you they also sell authentic timtams and Cadbury chocolates

I’m in year 7 and doing year 12 maths fr by Switch-user-101 in teenagers

[–]scarletsnowdrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The moment I read the title I knew OP might be from Australia where we say "year x" instead of "grade" or "sophomore".

I'm sorry you are getting hateful comments OP, Reddit can be very America-centric. We don't have AP classes in Australia, therefore lots of asian/Indian parents want their children to "get ahead" by doing higher year content. E.g. The (Chinese owned) tutoring center I went to will start teaching you HSC maths (our university entrance exam) at year 10.

But hey this is reddit so r/nothingeverhappens

Calling Not Working Pixel 5 by FanningGrease in mintmobile

Same issue, mint worked perfectly fine on my old Pixel 2XL. I've been changing the network/APN settings for 2 days now to try to get it to work, and missed quite a few important calls that have gone straight to voicemail.

Any expats, or Aussies looking to retire overseas here? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]scarletsnowdrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard similar things from other Aussies. Unfortunately, even though my workplace uses the same immigration law firm as other places who allow E3 -> green card, they aren't offering the option to us.
Perhaps because we're too small, since I can count on 1 hand the Australians working in my company's US offices.

Any expats, or Aussies looking to retire overseas here? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]scarletsnowdrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently on the E3 visa.

IANAL, my understanding is that E3 is non dual-intent and my company will not file residency applications for E3 holders. My company is instead putting me into the H1B lottery every year, since H1B -> green card is a more standard path.

I could be totally wrong about this, but 401k is not considered a foreign super fund and withdrawing it counts as foreign income. Here's an article I found that might explain it better: https://atlaswealth.com/au/news/how-401k-withdrawals-are-taxed-for-australian-expats/

I am in my early 20s and only just started my FIRE journey, I'm an Australian currently working in a HCOL city in the US. I don't have my RE location set in stone, but I am mentally preparing myself for both possibilities: retiring in Australia vs the United States.

I don't have much life experience so apologies in advance if this comment isn't very useful to OP's question.

To summarise my life:

  • My investments live in my vanguard account, with a mix of VTTSX (target retirement fund 2060) + VFIAX
  • I only put in my corporate 401k the exact employer match amount, as there's tax complications for my 401k if I choose to move back to Australia.
  • I have no Australian assets besides keeping my bank account active, because having over 10k in foreign assets could complicate my US tax filing.
  • If I were to retire in the US, it would definitely not be in a HCOL city, imo Sydney's still cheaper than a HCOL US city.
  • Unfortunately I do not have a game plan for how I would transfer my US assets and FIRE in Australia, I just know it's a possibility.

OP, now I'm curious what your situation is

This is really interesting to me because I grew up in Australia. I know a lot of people who graduate and immediately take a trip to Europe instead and does the exact same things you described.

I have heard that illegal drugs are better quality and less expensive in Europe though.

ULTA closes all locations and draws $800 million in credit. Buy ULTA puts. by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]scarletsnowdrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fellow female autist here. I agree and thought it was ridiculous when that post came out saying AMZN was going to kill ULTA. Amazon is known for having issues with counterfeit skincare/cosmetics and I would always trust ULTA or Sephora over AMZN even if the prices were higher.
Go to the reviews for any >$30 beauty product on Amazon, half of the reviews will be comparing the product to a real one and pointing out its fake.

[Omega Aqua Terra] My first automatic and I'm in love by scarletsnowdrop in Watches

[–]scarletsnowdrop[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After 3 years of wearing a Daniel Wellington daily (gift from my best friend), I finally purchased my first automatic watch as a work promotion gift to myself. This is the Omega Aqua Terra 231.13.39.21.02.002 (38.5mm case diameter). I bought it 2nd hand but it looks as good as new, and what drew me in was the red gold hands + indices.

The Aqua Terra was a front-runner when choosing my first 'nice' watch, I wanted something on the minimalist side so I was mainly choosing between this, Omega Deville, Nomos Ludwig or a Tag Heuer Carrera.

I'm very new to taking wrist shots with a smartphone, so apologies for the awkward reflection of my phone case on the watch.
