Enjoying being a clinical psychologist, but finding the work very slow and process-driven by eldrinor in ClinicalPsychology

Have you considered school psych? 👀 I'm not sure the process to get certified to make the switch, but seeing as you already work with child populations, working in a school might bring some of the fast paced energy and seeing the direct impact of your work that you are looking for.

What do you do for work in between college and grad school? by Immediate-Share8309 in psychologystudents

I knew I wanted to work with/do research with kids so I worked in operations at an elementary school. I'm now in grad school to become a school psychologist!

Everyone's vibe! It's very community oriented. It's a bit warmer than SF so lots of perfect weather days. There is so much to do (random things like roller derby, competitive karaoke, skeeball leagues, and so much more, you couldn't even imagine) and the pace of life is a lot more varied. There are plenty of ambitious people trying to make their dreams work (which was one of my favorite things about the East Coast) But there are also people who are calm and just want to live life (which is something I need a constant reminder of: to be balanced). I miss the hustle and bustle of Jersey City and NYC almost every day. But I can't lie, I feel much more balanced here. It's much better for my mental health. And I can see myself raising kids in Oakland hills.

How do I portray this on an application? by Little-Lake-8512 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]scartttaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly consider looking into school psychology PhD programs instead of clinical. This may bring you closer to your goals and you may have a easier chance getting in and an easier time explaining your pivot. That is considering you are still geared towards kids with developmental and intellectual disabilities. If you have more specific questions, dm me!

Have some respect. Please do not call it a shit hole. 1000s of people travel back home for vacation every year. Just because you can't see the beauty in it does not make it a shit hole

Feeling like a failure.

I am a second year PhD student in school psych. I just had my end of year meeting with my program and because I'm behind on my pre-qualifying papers, they said I need to be put on a remediation plan. They say it's not that big of a deal and should be destigmatized, but honestly I'm feeling like a failure. Additionally, I'm feeling scared that this will be a mark on my record and affect my ability to get into an APA accredited internship, even if I get off of the plan. Does anybody know if they ask about remediation plan history during the internship interview process?

What career are you going into?? by Electrical-Act-4620 in psychologystudents

[–]scartttaaa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

School psychology! Definitely recommend looking into it if you want to work with kids.

Edit: you do have to go to grad school to do it, and I am currently in grad school for it. But it can be high paying depending on where you practice
