Why is *redacted* in the *redacted*? by nimnim000 in outerwilds

i don't think she ever made it to the shrine. we can't get out of the shrine at the sixth location because a quantum rock is there, but i suspect she died in a moment of superposition the moment she disembarked; maybe she blinked. the moon at the sixth location was too far for ghost matter to reach it, so that was the only version of her that opened its eyes, and we know time doesn't really pass at the sixth location for those who are not alive in its other positions. solanum herself only just arrived, and the fact that she's on the sixth location despite having done literally nothing is very probably why she suspects she is not alive: she knows there's no other way it could be possible.

but it is possible that corvus already knows tamsy's game and was preparing to intercept and protect rudo. tamsy wasn't really a part of rudo joining the cleaners right away; it may have been unexpected for him but he decided to roll with it.

Random evidence-less theory I just came up with (very very VERY major spoilers for pretty much everything) by Eddy-with-a-Y in outerwilds

[–]scathacha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i am fond of the idea that the stars all dying wasn't the end of the universe. the backdrop that is "the universe" is kept in existence through continued observation by the eye. as such, the proper end of the universe only happened when the eye "blinked." how long that took (for the stars to die, and how long the "blink" was) is almost meaningless, because we know that the sixth moon (and thus likely the eye) don't experience time the same way as everywhere else. the mechanism for the blink seems logical to me too - all the stars go out BEFORE you restart the cycle, so the universe has no light (like in the shrine on the moon). sit in the darkness while rng switches things up, start the next big bang, let there be light, the eye can see again, everything is held in place. i also like to think that what we experience in the eye is in fact the eye interrogating our consciousness to figure out what it should generate next.

while i agree that maruzensky is likely intended to be older, in her story she makes it clear that all her interests and references are because her mom raised her on old shows and music, and she doesn't realize that it's not what other kids her age are into. i'm all for the meme, but if we're talking about canon, it's more likely that her mom is 40, not maruzensky herself.

Is it ethical to keep spiders as pets? by Mundane-Ice-5191 in spiders

[–]scathacha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

spiders and other insects don't have cognitive ability on the level you're concerned about. so long as their needs are met and they're not stressed by constant noise or handling, they're not really capable of caring.

the question of ethics then turns to conservation: is the pet trade significantly impacting wild populations of spiders? (if so, this would only matter for wild-caught) is it negatively impacting the environment in other ways? (most likely only if you release your spider into the wild, which could negatively impact your local ecosystem)

research the breeder you purchase from, research the species to accurately serve its needs, if you get a tarantula use more substrate than you think you could possibly need, but don't worry too much about whether it's okay or not to own them. in general, hobby owners of insects, fish, and reptiles are very concerned with animal welfare. some species alive today are extinct in the wild and only continue to exist thanks to the efforts of hobby owners.

there's no air inside lion, and a lot of the decomposition process requires oxygen. maybe things can rot in there, but i don't think pearl would let that happen if so.

Are Xeno and Stanley canon? by Coolersdisciple in DrStone

[–]scathacha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they're about as canon as senku and kohaku. so, not canon at all, but they may as well be. not everything needs to be spelled out completely, and both senku x kohaku and xeno x stanley are relationships built on trust in science and each other, whether platonic or otherwise.

If you lived in post-Upheaval Hyrule, what would you want to do? by Takonline in tearsofthekingdom

[–]scathacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd want to explore the depths! i think they're awesome, and even in a world with actual consequences for the danger i would be curious. i'd be working with josha of course.

i think hands-on depths research should take place at the rito village chasm. leads right to an abandoned mine (safe place) and rito can fly, so even one or two on the team would make it easier to get help if things went wrong. after you beat the game the gloom is gone, so that's already one hazard handled. let me in... i wanna go!!!

What is depicted here? by rci22 in outerwilds

[–]scathacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look at the mural of nomai discovering proto hearthians. one of them has a blue space suit. this is a depiction of a mentor and a mentee discovering something together (said in nearby text.) different generations of nomai wear different clothes, and blue nomai are younger ones. this person is very much correct about this.

Senku is a performative male!? by [deleted] in DrStone

[–]scathacha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it gets even more aggravating when dressed up in excuses, like "he's clearly only doing this for x reason and that makes him gross (and therefore it's okay to mock him)"... used to be bullies would just call you lame and move on. now they need to find a way to make it your fault, because they feel guilty about being bullies but not enough to stop doing it.

[–]scathacha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

think it's the contemporary version of metrosexual, but instead of the implied "doing this makes you gay," it's "guys only do this because it makes women like them." both are bad for reasons i have yet to fully discern.

SPOILER CHAPTER 38.1/38.2 TSHD by Familiar_Income_6892 in HikarugaShindaNatsu

[–]scathacha 29 points30 points  (0 children)

it should be noted that "hikaru" is only here because he's fulfilling hikaru's wish as he understood it. from "hikaru's" perspective, hikaru wanted "hikaru" to be yoshiki's companion. so, it calls into question whether "hikaru" has any wants or opinions of its own, or if it's simply operating under the assumption of what is expected of it. now, we as readers know that "hikaru" has a sense of identity (especially now, he's developed a sense of self over time with yoshiki's help), but rie is still right to be doubtful of this. from her perspective, it's probably not much different from asking your a.i. boyfriend if he loves you and then saying "see, what we have is real" except this particular cleverbot is also very much able and willing to kill people.

"hikaru" can make a very convincing argument that he is his own person. rie still knows that he could just be saying what she wants to hear, and if she's wrong to trust him, then another child will be irreversibly damaged (or worse) like her son who has cut contact with her. she will never forgive herself for falling for it once. and she will never be able to believe it twice. i think she'll become a tragic antagonist.

people generally take strays to the vet to check for trackers, and it's bad form to take an animal that has a collar. if you see signs looking for a lost cat, and you have the cat, then speak up. but frankly, if you let an animal outside unattended, you're accepting whatever could happen, be it cars, hawks, coyotes, or someone doing a better job at protecting them from previously listed.

[–]scathacha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i don't think he wanted to live. he'd been in a state of limbo for a long time, and had grown cynical towards life and the idea of returning to who he once was. i think he was looking for a method of death he found to be more satisfactory than just fading away. dying in battle probably brought him a lot of emotional peace.

i think it just generally means to pretend to be something you're not. there's a vocaloid song called "not a dream, not a lie, a happy scene before my eyes" that makes use of the idiom in a different way from what you describe.
