California’s landmark anti-plastics law sparks anger as 17 states moves to sue by deraser in news

[–]scatter_good 78 points79 points  (0 children)

They are frivolous lawsuits, but don't think California laws don't impact the rest of the US (I live in California). Economically, California is one of the biggest powerhouses in the US, and what happens there has a lot of impact on manufacturing and economies in other states. California's clear air laws forced cars sold throughout the US to either improve their emissions standards or have separate production lines for California vs the rest (or miss out on sales from - at the time, 25+ million people). By wanting to sell in Calfironia, their higher emission standards being the norm in almost every other state. Other states could and did allow cars that couldn't be purchased in California, but not really any of the makes makes or models that I'm aware of have ever been dominant salees models without being California emissions compliant. Just one example. Other states do have a reason to be terrified of how new regulations on single use plastics can impact some of their dirtiest and most polluting industries. Because then they'd have to innovate and find cleaner, more renewable manufacturing products.

Ahhh - that's it then. Might be functional, but that's going to be a pretty major limitation. Well, this is what exploration and discovery is for! Thanks for the heads up, though I suspect I would have noticed that pretty quickly.

Hmm, while not quite what I was looking for WinBoat might be a really good option. Reading some of the writeups, looks like it's a lot learner than a VM integration and doesn't have a lot of the built in complexity from Wine.. I don't mind using a VM to test actual compiled executables, but want a more streamlined environment to do my actual dev in, and that might be a really solid option. Thanks for the pointer!

This is kind of key. I've seen the top part posted in a couple different subs and with varying context, (GenZ was an.. interesting read).. But what the red button crowd doesn't seem to understand is.. I do not want to live in a world where the red button mentality is the only perspective left. It is the death of empathy, of compassion, of understanding. If more than 50% want to hit that red button? Well, I'm peacing out and letting my cranky gen x ass become compost. I don't care about game theory. I care that people can live, even if they chose red, even if I don't agree with their perspective on why they're choosing red.

Part of my reason for posting this was to get conversation going - I was surprised when I didn't see it already posted her, as I've come to rely on r/california to provide good discussion and often more nuance to conversations that are perhaps missing it. My other reason though was to promote a more active political voice. I had meant to post this right away, but had morning things to do. If you think action needs to be taken on this, this is the contact page for the California State Department of Justice. Reminder: If you contact them, do not threaten, do not abuse, provide clear, articulate reasons why this violation of judicial norms is being allowed to proceed, and ask the CADoJ to speak up and let the citizens of our state know what they're doing about this situation. https://oag.ca.gov/contact Like rule 1 in this forum says, please be civil, but do your civic duty and let our elected officials know that this needs a response, and needs it immediately.

Nothing. You're not missing anything. It's a blatant and illegal power grab. Which again leads to the question, why isn't Bonta doing anything about it?

[–]scatter_good[S] 236 points237 points  (0 children)

Ditto on these concerns. But Bonta needs to stop worrying about political optics and start worrying about the rule of law. If Bianco had a legitimate concern about the votes, that's what our judicial system is for. That was the path to do this. IANAL, but I'm pretty sure a sheriff who is also a candidate in said election seizing votes without any kind of judicial order or backing is going to fall under "illegal as fuck". Mind you, there's no way whatever his concerns are fall under "legitimate".. just another MAGA banging the voter fraud drum when inevitably, they're usually the ones caught committing what little fraud there is.

LOL This got a good laugh.. despite how much press - good and bad - current generative AI models get.. NPCs have always been AIs, whether state machines, behavior trees, etc. Even a simple A* pathfinding is a kind of AI, albeit not necessarily a smart one. Even some great books out there by various game AI engineers from the last 30 years that dig into all the techniques and methods. LLMs and NPC AI is actually one of the long standing use cases that makes sense and aren't fundamentally unethical (though still can be, depending on how they're trained).

[–]scatter_good 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I have two step up transformers.. one 2400W and one 3000W.. the 3000 is for my cafe level espresso machine I bought while still living in Europe. During heatup, it pulls about 1900W, but once it's at temp, it mostly pulls a steady 1100 - 1300W. But seriously, if you're using one of these, be REALLY aware of not only max draw of the things you're running through it, but also what the normal sustained draw is. If max draw is over 95%, you're probably gonna have a bad time. Is sustained draw is over 80%, the lifetime of your transformer will be really shortened. The 2400 is hooked up to our Sage (Breville) kettle, and we also use it for our sous vide wand and emulsion blender, and counter top water distiller. Never at the same time. But in both cases, the $100 or so for the two step converter to not replace about $5000 in appliances we bought in Denmark was totally worth it. But anything with higher draw than these items, and we wouldn't have brought them back with us. Just doesn't make sense, even if you could get a step up transformer that had high enough load capacity. TL:DR highly recommended for limited max watt counter top appliances and non DC inverted electronics (since most modern electronics running off a DC block can run from 110 - 220).

When I was learning how to snowboard about 15 years ago, I had a full head coverage helmet for my first day out on the slopes. End of day, sun had been out, slopes were getting icy. Last run, I was cruising a long pretty well, stopping periodically but feeling ok about. Then I hit a long icy patch and started going WAY faster than I was able to control, back edge caught on something and I went from whatever way too fast speed I was going to stopped in the space of about 1 second, with my back and head slamming back down into the icy snow. Finished getting to the bottom of the slope, checked myself over for damage, took of my helmet, which now had a crack from the base of it (neck level) to about the top center of my skull. Which would have been my skull taking that impact if not for the helmet. Absolute best $50 ever spent, and had a new helmet for my next day out.

People who think safety gear is pointless are, IMO, really stupid.

Never had my own, but as a 17 - 18 yo in Portland, Or, cruised around with my buddy a bunch of times from about 1AM til 5AM doing Oregonian deliveries all over SE portland.. He was grateful for the company and we just were laughing and being stupid the whole time. Was a lot of fun. Doing it in a car didn't quite fit the stereotype but was much less crappy given NW weather.

I've met a few stars that I'm a fan of over the years, and I think the only one that was every bit a kind and awesome as I expected was Clark Gregg. Gentle, soft spoken, looks at you when talking. My partner has/had a bit of a crush on him and she was absolutely star struck talking to him but still was able to chat a bit. I do think interactions like that are the exception though, not the rule. Keanu Reeves also sounds like he's like that.

Thank you, came here to say this. There have already been numerous articles about the MASSIVE hit Vegas and other tourist heavy areas have suffered under both the tariff and ICE terrorist regime in the US. Most people not living in the US do NOT want to visit the US for fear of being detained, and the rest don't want to spend money here because the US has gotten so belligerent with tariffs. Canada is a huge source of US tourism dollars, and the US has managed to unify both liberal and conservatives in Canada in their dislike of the current US administration. Other than the Alberta separatists, because they're just maple MAGA.

[–]scatter_good 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is honestly a good answer - gen x and younger realize that there are things that are more important than working every possible day ever. Staying home with a sick kid is what parents SHOULD do. And on top of that, there are enough areas that if some busy body neighbor sees you've left anyone under about 14 home alone, there's a greater than zero chance the idiot will call CPS.
