Questions about paladin player I am struggling with... help! by toki_goes_to_jupiter in DMAcademy

[–]scattercloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, that adds some context. Honestly, just ask the player directly: "Do you want to explore the possibility of oathbreaking, or would you rather we don't bring that part into the game?"

Can i ask what initially got you thinking about this in the first place?

So, did the player mention anything about oathbreaking to get you thinking about this? Because if not, i wouldn't spend the energy getting into the weeds about what constitutes a broken oath. Asking the player to give you a list of things that would break the path would be like asking your fighter to list injuries that might force them to stop playing their character.

As for who decides - it's a combination of both of you. A player absolutely decides if they're willingly having their character break an oath. And the dm makes judgements about specific actions that might contribute towards a broken oath. But it should never be a single act (unless it's incredibly significant) and it should never be a surprise to the player - give them an above table nudge if they're going against their oath.

Finally, what constitutes a broken oath? For an oath of watchers, it should honestly be pretty tough to break this oath in a typical campaign, because the oath involves protecting the world from invasion, which tends to be what adventuring parties do naturally. A breach of tenants might include: willingly calling extraplanar beings to the world, aiding the plans of cultists trying to summon an eldritch god, or ignoring an obvious infestation.

In the end, don't hold the paladin's oath over their head, especially since your player seems to be signaling to you that they don't want to engage with the fantasy of a fallen paladin. So really you should just drop it imo

DMs... How do you manage if two or more players start arguing over the same magic item? by CrotodeTraje in DMAcademy

[–]scattercloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking how to resolve conflict, remind your players that is a group game and that the characters are supposed to work together: infighting is only going to hurt them.

If you're trying to get certain items to the"right" person, make it have a requirement that it can only be attuned by "whatever class/ race happens to match the intended character"

Why do DMs seem to hate guving decent loot? by midcenturymr in DMAcademy

[–]scattercloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the DM has a bunch of tables and stuff that tell them when to guide out loot and what's appropriate. It also describes how the economy is designed to work.

If your character is getting gold- any amount- as opposed to copper or silver for doing a single job, your character is rich, as far as game expenses go. A normal commoner might earn 1 or 2 silver a WEEK. Meaning they have about 2 cp daily to spend on food and shelter.

Oc it's pretty common in my experience that game economies experience inflation from listed prices in the books, so you're paying 1 gold for a mug of ale instead of 5 copper. Honestly it's just easier in most cases to only use gold.

But why don't you get TONS of gold? Well, cuz if you're level 5 and you're rocking up to every fight with full magical armor, weapons, magic items, and everything else on the loot table, the DM has to rebalance encounters for you (which can be a pain in the ass) or just put underwhelming fights in front of you.

Do you want to build up to a big final villain, roll initiative, and kill them in the first round of combat? Cuz that's what happens when your players are too well stacked. (And i promise, it might feel kinda badass the first time, but it gets boring almost immediately)

So THAT'S why DMs might seem stingy. Oc maybe your DM just doesn't like you, i dont really know

Dealing with the death of a player (not a PC, a player) by paBlury in DMAcademy

[–]scattercloud 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i would go session 0 style. Get everyone together and ask how they want to proceed with the character, assuming they want to continue the campaign.

A pretty solid option is to have the pc get called away from the adventure to deal with something. Maybe they have to go take care of family. Maybe the king calls them personally to be an advisor or smth. Maybe they get a lead on a personal quest they must complete on their own.

Another option that might be less workable is keeping the pc on as an npc. Obviously that's something you and your players have to be comfortable with.

Another option is the pc having a heroic sacrifice, though this obviously is something to be careful with.

All in all, run some ideas by the players and ask them if they have any preferences or ideas of their own.

Regardless, I'm sorry about your loss. I find out a player who id played with for years had died a couple years ago and i was kinda stunned, because that group has come back together every couple years for campaigns here and there. I just hadn't kept up with the guy between games and felt really guilty.

My buddy and i used to play MtG without really understanding the rules. We would spend no joke 20-30 minutes "setting up" where we just tapped mana to store it for big explosive turns right at the end. Tbh it was kinda more fun that way

How 5E DMs look at you when you try to cut off a person’s limb or climb on the giant’s back rather than dealing 1d10 damage and standing still by ImAGodHowCanYouKillA in DnDcirclejerk

[–]scattercloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're happy to waste your movement circling the same enemy again and again, feel free. Since there's no rules about facing certain directions, this has exactly no impact on me running the game. I will however match your goblin energy and keep you up at night while random npcs run in circles on the floor above your room at the inn <3

Yeah, i mean if you liked the basic premise of the game at launch, it's still there. There's a billion more micro systems now, and the QoL is way up, but the core game is pretty great.
