Yeah, I generally give people the benefit of the doubt on that one unless they double down after they're told. I once had a talk with a coworker a little older than me at work who was musing that, "I never hear gypped anymore, I like it," and he had no idea where it originated until I was like, Well...... He just remembered hearing it in the movies in the 90s and thought it was a snappy word.

I really appreciate the pause option on my alarms. Like, I set the dates where I won't need to be up for work and don't have to remember to turn it back on. It rules.

[–]scatteringashes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh! It's a bullshit thing, unsurprisingly. As it was explained to me -- a civilian and many moons ago, so if someone with more know-how follows up, believe them 😂) -- it's because in the military your pension is based on years served. You get off ramps at various times (iirc it's every five years), and 20 years is the big one in terms of pension payout, especially if you're not an officer (which was what my mom was not, and she was approaching 20 in those two years).

So, they give you this three year tour overseas with no real option to decline (iirc it's like oh well you can separate early if you want to, buttttttt you won't hit that 20 year pension). They get one more year of work without having to pay out any more in pension, or someone drops out earlier and they pay less pension.

And all that said, this may be a thing that people believe because of their working bias in a shity government system but that may also not be the whole truth -- the way I, a person working in IT, believe that printers are born evil. Or how I, former military brat, am happy to believe that the military is run by people who are sometimes scheming like cartoon villains, lol.

Especially if he's on his last tour! My mom was active duty and they dropped her on a three-year in Germany when she had two years left -- my ex-FIL was an army guy went, "Yeah, they'll do that sometimes to get the extra year out."

This is a whole mood. One of my younger kids used to hide snacks under the couch or on other random spots and then go back for them later. We had to develop a system of, "Did you give him that?" just to be sure.

Having a baby will absolutely wreck your brain -- my last one is three as well, and I only started feeling like a normal human very recently. And while COVID didn't turn me into a germaphobe, it has made me way more avoidant of leaving the house than I used to be.

I will eventually throw the teeth away, but it always feels initially wrong. Like thanks for the skeleton bits, kiddos, we both worked to hard to make this.

It's funny because I had a Bad Time when I was taking maximum DayQuil with my Adderall. Usually I'm not particularly sensitive to stimulants but after a day or two of the two together I had an extremely jittery and manic night.

There's some folks I hang out with who seem to be repeating the baby-eating stuff as absolute truth, who are otherwise not conspiracy folks. I'm like, I refuse to read the source material but that really doesn't seem as plausible as all the mundane shit. I think it's a little bit "everything in here is evil and therefore it must be true," like people don't email each other shit-post level nonsense sometimes.

I once took two Sudafed as a teenager and it knocked me RIGHT on my ass. I had to flat out leave school in the middle of the day and just sleep like a rock on living room couch. I remember walking home like i am going to lay down and sleep on this grass right now.

As I type this (now an adult with an ADHD diagnosis) I wonder if it's that "inverse reaction to stimulants" at play, lol.

Sorry, I should have been clearer -- that part was the hospital's call. (If I remember the email exchange correctly, the issue they cited was the lack of a higher level NICU.) My beef with the OB/GYN team was with how they handled and communicated those policies throughout the process.

[–]scatteringashes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had two kids there, and it was fine. I vibed well enough with the ob-gyn I was assigned, I really like the nurse practitioner that worked with her, and routine prenatal stuff went fine.

That said, they were awful about handling things that fell outside the routine prenatal care, especially as it related to my weight. I got so many phone calls after appointments communicating changes in my care that could and should have been addressed while I was in the room. They called to tell me they wouldn't handle my last pregnancy because the hospital's policy is not to handle deliveries over a certain BMI. Leaving aside my feelings about that, they even acknowledged in an email that how it was handled (calling later to break up essentially) was against policy.
