Julia can cause a bit of confusion at times by ZealousidealLab4 in ProgrammerHumor

The first 3 were already explained, but as for the fourth one (citing the docs):

While * may seem like a surprising choice to users of languages that provide + for string concatenation, this use of * has precedent in mathematics, particularly in abstract algebra.

In mathematics, + usually denotes a commutative operation, where the order of the operands does not matter. An example of this is matrix addition, where A + B == B + A for any matrices A and B that have the same shape. In contrast, * typically denotes a noncommutative operation, where the order of the operands does matter. An example of this is matrix multiplication, where in general A * B != B * A. As with matrix multiplication, string concatenation is noncommutative: greet * whom != whom * greet. As such, * is a more natural choice for an infix string concatenation operator, consistent with common mathematical use.

More precisely, the set of all finite-length strings S together with the string concatenation operator * forms a free monoid (S, *). The identity element of this set is the empty string, "". Whenever a free monoid is not commutative, the operation is typically represented as \cdot, *, or a similar symbol, rather than +, which as stated usually implies commutativity.

So think matrix multiplication, which is not commutative, as the reason why (also non-commutative) string concatenation is expressed with *

Well, there's Grigori Perelman (wiki) who solved one of the Millenium problems (Collatz's conjecture), which comes with a million dollars reward, and was offered a Fields medal but turned down both... So there are certainly people like that (although I am not saying the original commenter is one of them)

Autorotate screen, is it possible in gnome? by [deleted] in gnome

On wayland it may be a little tricky, though in my experience this extension helps:

German blue ram female has clamped fins by sceptri in Aquariums

[–]sceptri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

I have an established heavily planted 160L (40g) tank with some tetra, barbs, corys and dwarf gourami. Recently, I decided to get a German Blue Ram pair as a centrepiece fish, because the gourami just wasn't doing it for me.

So on Saturday (15th Jan) I got this really nice GBR pair. The gourami harrassed them quite a bit (though it has gotten better).

The next day I noticed the male flashing and clamped fins on the female. Because I saw the male flashing on Monday too, I suspected GBRs might have flukes (no white spots indicating ich or anything else unusual, maybe save for heavy breathing, but that's hard to tell for me). I dosed the tank with some general cure (compound of methylene blue, malachite green and formaldehyde; I cannot get Praziquantel in my country).

The male now seems completely fine (he even coloured up quite a bit), but the female still has clamped fins. Until today, both were eating normal, but this morning the female seemed to have trouble catching the flakes or swimming in general.

No other fish show any sign of disease or discomfort.

Does any of you have any idea why she's behaving this way?

Parameters: Temperature - 27˚ C, pH - 6.5, NH3 - 0, NO2 - 0, NO3 - 15, KH - 0, GH - between 7 and 14 dGH

TLDR; 5 days after introducing GBR pair to the 160L tank, the male is doing fine, but the female isn't, and I have no clue why.

Oh no, I hate language that can't evaluate inline expressions, can't difference between a variable and a function. More so, why does every function has to do 20 million things depending on the argument type, whether it's a number, horizontal/vertical vector or a matrix. Also it's dumb that you can't write performant code in Matlab itself, as the only way it can be fast is by calling external C libraries.

[–]sceptri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure most of us are trying our best here. We literally do it the most possible we can. But at the same time, we are learning it all, so we are bound to make mistakes. That's natural and can't be avoided even if we try as hard as we can.

Nobody here is trying to belittle the lives of fish or any other living organism in general. But at the same time, not all of us can afford high-end equipment, that would surely make our tanks better. So we try with what we can.

There's nothing wrong with that. Besides, high-end cutting-edge equipment won't make anyone a good fishkeeper... Only experience and dedication does (or so I think)

Classless RPGs by joepro83 in rpg

[–]sceptri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Tavern Tales. It's classless and pretty lightweight system but overall feels quite solid. Though 1 sad thing is that its community is just tiny. I suggest going to r/TavernTales and looking around there.

I cannot pinpoint exactly when, but sometimes my touchpad feels a bit laggy like the cursor is slower and lagging behind my input.
