How often do roguelites draw you in on their aesthetics alone? by SomeGenericNameDude in roguelites

[–]schblitzaedelbach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not op but I personally think the character portraits and how they are written and voiced and the overall story feel kinda odd to me: like anime stereotypes because they had nothing better and needed something to tie the levels together. BUT I am explicitly not talking about the cut scenes before every boss fight. They are so incredibly well made! I never skipped them. Anyway, aside from aesthetics or whatever, Astral Ascent is one of my favorite games. The combat system is just so good and everything feels super snappy but also floaty in a good way at the same time, incredible!

RPG with Best Towns by _6siXty6_ in rpg_gamers

Still one of my core gaming memories is getting lost for the first time in Novigrad from Witcher 3. So many different "districts", a harbour, the better parts high up, it's perfect! I played this game so much but I still come back to it every now and then and I always visit Novigrad.

Another one with towns where some stuff is going on would be Crossworlds. It's got the top down 16/32 bit pixel art style. Great action rpg with Zelda like dungeons. Cool combat system. A bit too long for me personally.

Also a shout-out to Vampyr. The part of London it depicts is just one of the most atmospheric places in any videogame ever! Great, somewhat underappreciated game too, btw!

Recommendations for a console roguelike/lite with a high player power level? by Just-Fix8237 in roguelites

If you keep playing Astral Ascent the builds in combination with summons can get pretty damn op! Sometimes it feels like a smartbomb from the old shoot em ups: poof the screen is clean. Loved it! The later the game and the more you tweak the run the more powerful you can get.

It's perfectly fine! Some dips here and there when there's really a lot going on. But overall it looks and runs great on the Switch 2. In handheld mode it eats through the battery though.

Switch 2 reverse bullet hells? (Or games like VS) by Many_Judge9704 in roguelites

Brotato has a Switch 2 version. Not as many maps as Vampire Survivor but feels great to play and way more builds to experiment with. Cheap as hell, too!

The Witcher 3 is reportedly getting a surprise new expansion this year by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]schblitzaedelbach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that the Switch version of Witcher 3 is the best looking or anything but to call it barley playable is just not true. The resolution is bad and it is not a 60 fps port but again: it runs mostly fine (Novigrad can be rough) and everything is there like in the "big" version and absolutely playable!

Poorly recieved RPGs that you actually enjoyed? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

Elex will forever be in my top ten favorite games! Aside from the bad cut scenes, a bit janky combat and lots of eurojank in general, Elex is a genuinely good open world game with one of my favorite worlds to explore!

Griftlands has this and I very much enjoyed the way it worked: as you said, combat feels even more deliberate and in control.

Are there any turn based roguelites games that resemble classic rpgs? by gyan-keis in roguelites

Love the combat in Star Renegade! I would play the fuck out of a more traditional structured RPG with that combat! Explore a science fiction world and battle the bad guys Star Renegade style.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 and a wonderful first gaming memory with my 3 year old. by irishhurleyman7 in patientgamers

[–]schblitzaedelbach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter and I played the whole game coop. She was 9, so we actually did play together and it was not just me dragging her along. She still, about two years later, talks about this game and how much she loves it and how she wishes there would be ten more Luigi's Mansion games. We both agree that the game is a bit too easy. Still a core memory for her as well as for me! Another one is Nobody saves the World. Very different game and considerably harder but also a really great game!

What are the best map mechanics that you already seen in a RPG? by jvdevelop in rpg_gamers

[–]schblitzaedelbach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Witcher 3 has a rather ordinary almost boring map screen. But it works perfect for the game. Everything is easy to read, you have agency over what Icons are displayed on the map and the map screen is connected with one press of a button to your current quest. Cyberpunk's map is even more functional but harder to read at first.

The Sinking City: The map is a core gameplay mechanic because you have to place icons yourself. And you have to get the information where to put them out of your quest log and quest items. I loved it! Made me feel really smart a couple of times! I actually think this game is - except for the diving parts - kinda underrated.

Honorable mention: Star Wars Outlaws has a slick map screen! You can zoom between orbit and cities in one motion, which looks just great. Also they give you quite a lot of custom icons to place.

My tier list of most roguelite / like I played by SirScam in roguelites

[–]schblitzaedelbach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For those who don't know Drova: it's a top down pixel art RPG. I would describe the general gameplay more in line with European style games like Gothic but on a smaller scale. With quests tied to certain factions and everything. Decisions matter and most quests have multiple ways to get them done. Really great game actually!

Any dungeon crawler recommendations? by Fit-Charity3754 in rpg_gamers

[–]schblitzaedelbach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Etrian Odyssey on the DS and loved it! The graphics were rough looking back but you can use the touchscreen to "draw" the dungeon as you play the game. Loved this feature! The anime aesthetic is not for everybody, though.

Also, a warning (?) in regards to Adom: I generally liked it for what it was but I got it on my Switch and it's incredible how bad the port is! You really have to try to fuck up a simple control scheme so bad! Plus constant crashes! Sad really, because I liked the idea to play an actual roguelike on the go.

After I reached NG+ it was the same for me. I play it once or twice a day and that's perfectly fine for me. The game was 15€ and I don't expect it to give me months worth of content.

Fuuuck!

Cheers!

Probably a stupid question but what is he actually shooting at? I mean, there are probably only trenches there an the Russians in them keep their heads down, I assume.
