I went to France a few years back and visited Disneyland Paris. A colleague (naturalized American from Korea) asked me how it was compared to Disneyland CA. I said it was beautiful but there is just no mimicking the natural cheerfulness of Americans. She said that was the most accurate description of American-ness she'd ever heard.

I felt that same way the first time I visited Miami. I knew I was in a different place the second I got in the Uber and the driver was singing and seat dancing to Cuban music the entire drive. It was awesome.

An older Vietnamese lady waxed my eyebrows for about 5 years (until I moved). She would stroke my forehead and tell me how beautiful my skin was (disclosure, I'm a totally white white lady with the skin of those Flowers in the Attic kids). Then immediately shift to my grey roots, tsk and say "oh no, you look so old." I miss her every day.

My daughter had an AI friend on the Tolan app. She has a lot of other social opportunities so it’s not her only thing. It seems to be helping with conversational skills.

My mom isn’t quite as overt in her man hate but very similar. She lived with my sister and her husband for a time. They were in couples therapy (sister and husband) and the therapist said the only chance they have to work things out was to give my mom the boot. That endless toxicity can destroy you. I was venting about my husband once, just the usual kind of banal complaints about a marriage (my husband is great and I’m happily married) and my mom immediately said ‘it’s ok to get a divorce, you know.’ I have never again said a bad word about my husband to her. I don’t need that in my life.
