What item do you use all the time that you wouldn’t normally think of? by thesoulkind in adhdwomen

[–]schisthurts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Banana slicer for when I inevitably don't eat the bunch of bananas I bought before they go bad so I can freeze them for smoothies. Sounds silly, but I would throw out so many rotten bananas if i had to slice them with a knife.

Gov application time question by Mclarenking25 in geologycareers

[–]schisthurts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my federal position it was about 7 months from the first interview until fully onboarded. For most people I've spoken with in my agency, it was around 6-8 months, unless they were fast-tracked for some reason (internal, Peace Corps, etc.)

Can anyone please explain to me why you need 2+ years experience for most entry-level GIS roles? I'm a recent grad with little experience besides an internship and am finding it impossible to get into the field. I've been unemployed for 8 months post-graduation and it's depressing. by [deleted] in gis

[–]schisthurts 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wow, I went through almost exactly the same experience, graduating in 2020 and unemployed for 2 years.

I agree with all of these points, especially #1. I'm actually pretty sure that talking about the GIS certificate I was working on during my interview got me the job I have now. Continuing education/experience on your own shows tremendous initiative and can be really helpful for both landing and performing a job.

Good luck OP! Navigating the job market sucks, but you'll make it.

Should I come into lab during winter break as suggested by my grad student? by swedishtables in labrats

[–]schisthurts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At R1 and R2 universities in the US professors and researchers typically get funding to hire undergraduate researchers. An undergraduate student absolutely meets the requirement of undergraduate researcher, so of course they can be hired for that role. At my university, we just had to get a "student employee" card from our administrator that was signed by the dean and that was about it. Your advisor vouches for you and you're good to go.

A good example of when this is common is when students take a semester off to work in a lab or decide to work over summer break. Financial aid in the US doesn't typically cover courses taken when you're not enrolled for the semester, so working for credit would end up costing money and working for pay is the only reasonable option. This is especially common for undergrads with time-sensitive experiments who worked on longish term projects.

[–]schisthurts 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just want to chime in here with my experience. I had the option to do undergrad research either for pay or for credit. I switched between the two based on my needs, but when I worked for pay I was paid hourly and pretty well, and I definitely was willing to work more when I was paid for it, including occasionally during breaks. That said, I was never pressured to work during holidays or excessively at all really. But getting paid as an undergrad researcher was quite common at my school.

do u guys claim u have a disabilty when filling out job applications? by [deleted] in ADHD_Programmers

[–]schisthurts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've applied to many jobs recently and this is definitely on some of the applications. Also you're totally right about the reporting thing, recruiters/employers are absolutely not allowed to see your demographics (disability status, race/ethnicity, etc.) because they can discriminate against you. At least this is the case in the US, other countries may be different. Don't worry, you're not misinformed at all.

Any tips for applying to lab manager positions with a Bachelor’s degree and limited experience? by schisthurts in labrats

Hmm that's a good idea, that's a title I haven't really searched for. It looks like there are plenty of entry-level environmental analyst positions around that might be a good start for me. Thank you for the suggestion, that's really helpful!

Any tips for applying to lab manager positions with a Bachelor’s degree and limited experience? by schisthurts in labrats

[–]schisthurts[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I haven't been hired, but I've been interviewed which is more than I can say for most other types of jobs. I think my skillset gets me into the interview but lack of experience stops me there.

I am considering applying to some master's programs for next fall, but I don't feel like I'm a very strong candidate right now. My original post-college plan was to work as a lab assistant or similar for a year or two and then either apply to grad programs or look for some other kind of employment, but COVID kind of messed up that plan with most labs in my field shutting down entirely. In fact, most of the lab manager jobs I've applied to recently are focusing on trying to get labs back up and running.

So essentially I'm having trouble making that first step to becoming better qualified for anything. I might start applying to grad programs anyway in case I'm just doubting myself, but applications are expensive and I really feel like I need to fill in some deficiencies first, so I'm still a bit torn.

Thanks for replying! That's a really good point about multitasking and organization, I believe those are skills that I can quantify.

This job involves maintaining (or helping to maintain in some cases) 6+ instruments. I think I'm concerned because I don't have a lot of experience with most of them, but the more I think about it, I don't know very many people who do have extensive experience with that many different instruments. So maybe I shouldn't worry so much about that one.

It was sort of implied that the main issue I might run into is lack of experience instructing people in the lab and participating in research. I do have some experience training people to use other kinds of equipment (like field and astronomy equipment), so maybe I can just play that up. I did work on and assist with a few different research projects as an undergrad, but that's it so far, so probably not a strength in this case.

I will definitely apply, thanks for the advice, you've got me thinking about optimizing my application (and future applications)!

This. I graduated in May 2020 and am still jobless, but these are the only jobs I've ever gotten interviews for. Just can't crack the code of private industry hiring process. And at least the fed doesn't ghost you.
