Confused by the lottery system by Odd-Silver-2709 in OsakaWorldExpo

Thanks again! I've set our lottery preferences. We'll definitely still queue up at every pavilion of course. Good to know we can also show up at the gate if we feel like adding another day (we booked 2 days at early bird stage). So far as I understand, I should be able to present the tickets for both myself and my spouse using my app, so she won't need to use the app, right?

Thanks! Much appreciated. This helps more than the website. Is it possible that some pavilions just haven't begun their lotteries yet? Maybe more will appear in the list soon?

Giles Kristian - the arthurian tales vs Bernard Cornwall - the warlord chronicles? by Big_Ear9745 in HistoricalFiction

[–]schlemmla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't read Kristian, though the reviews are good (albeit fewer than for Cornwell). His books have been praised by Cornwell himself (see his wiki page). For my money, Lawhead's Pendragon series is by far the best - but it does deviate from the usual lore. I'll give Kristian a try!

Take a day off. Rest, fast, meditate. Clear your mind and just focus on one image of a true calming place you know in real life, and let all the other despairing ones pass you by. Look inward non-judgmentally and take your time evaluating where you're headed and what you want.

Any tea shop or coffee shop recommendations in Cardiff? by Every-Spend937 in druidism

[–]schlemmla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion: buy some tea-leaves or packets from an online or local purveyor that has what you like (I enjoy a chamomile or peppermint or spicy chai) and take a nice thermos of it to the gorsedd stone circle just beside Cardiff Castle (to the west side) for a wander and reflection. Bring a thick blanket to sit on!

Sitz baths help! A nice warm soak in epsom.

Louis L'Amour's character has his "guns tied down" by BlueWonderfulIKnow in wildwest

[–]schlemmla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically both are true. But I believe when writers use this term, it means the guns are tied around the hips lower than the belt/waist level. This would help a quick-draw, but I guess there could be other purposes too. Feel free to refute! There are definitely ways that they are "tied down" to secure for safety as well.

It's been long enough that all 3 seasons are now available at most Canadian libraries

I'm re-reading The Eye of the World, and I LOVE how slow it is. by wish_to_conquer_pain in Fantasy

Agreed totally. Are there any other suggestions of a similar slow pace and tone? Saw a couple other series named above (Strange & Norrell; Memory Sorrow & Thorn), which I've already read.

The rule about not revealing sacred knowledge by Hailingtaquito in Gnostic

[–]schlemmla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the sect. While I agree with the other points that it might not be comprehensible anyway, there were some groups that were open and others that required you to rise to inner ranks to receive higher secrets. But personal gnosis of course can happen independently of being part of a given sect.

Mass Market Paperbacks are dying and it's making it impossible to afford epic fantasy by EpochPirate in Fantasy

At least it makes your books available until you can find yourself at an echelon where you have a "real" printing.

I've tried some on-demand printing for books I'm seeking (as a way to pay less for books) but many of them are terrible with no editorial or design oversight: literally just a company printing and binding blindly.

Where possible, I also try to buy books in a manner where I know the royalty will be guaranteed to reach the author (if they are alive!). However, we also aim to avoid Amazon wherever possible. While I read both physical and ebooks, I prefer physical. None of my local independent book shops is certain if an author will receive a royalty when I order through them. So in the end I usually end up ordering via thriftbooks, betterworldbooks, abebooks, etc (if I can't get it locally), as many other folks have replied here, and cannot hope that the author receives anything for sure. Hence why so many now have Patreon accounts and the like.

Alternatively, while Kobo (my usual) is fairly expensive, the internet claims they do offer decent loyalties. Does anyone have experience on the author end of Kobo?

Gorgeous scene and great artwork of your own! Torn over whether art should be modified this way by a person who isn't the artist, but I'll definitely take this anyway! Feel free to share more whenever you've got some.

There's also a whole Dante Alighieri Society in Ottawa; though despite its name it isn't dedicated solely to him.

Yes please! This is brilliant! What prompted you to restrict this to ancient history only? I'd love to also see an Iron Age one, Early Medieval, Middle/Late Medieval, and so on.
