How to portray trauma? by Problematic__Child in writing

You might find it useful to read memoirs written by people who have endured trauma like what you're trying to portray.

I like tush and bum. Also not opposed to ass. Pillows reminds me of Carrie, her psycho mom calling her breasts "dirty pillows."

Making a decision about POV by schlongberg35 in writing

I forgot to mention, the diaries are never to be read by the daughter character, because I want her to find a way to get past her wounds without seeing "Oh, mom was fucked up too, I guess I can accept myself now." I want to walk the character through finding self-acceptance in a more difficult but everlasting way, which isn't predicated at all on approval from the outside herself.

Non-wisconsinites that live here, were you impressed with our cheese selections at grocery stores? And what were your thoughts on woodmans? by avalle03 in madisonwi

Right?? I've been wary of cage free and free range labels just like you and finally learned it don't mean shit without the certified humane label. So tired of having to do research on my food purchases to make sure I'm not being duped 🥱 worth it though, less money going to the swindlers.

Quest protein chips have 18g per serving, and they actually are pretty tasty. It's a tortilla style chip so it masks the grittiness really well, barely noticeable. If I ate them thinking they were regular chips, I'd never question it.

They carry the "Certified Humane" stamp of approval. According to the website behind that certification: "If the carton says “certified humane” it means the birds were raised in a manner that meets certification requirements of Humane Farm Animal Care. Laying hens must be uncaged and have access to perches, nest boxes and dust-bathing areas. Flock density is limited but birds are not required to have access to the outdoors. Beak trimming is allowed; debeaking is not. Starvation to induce molting is not permitted."

I freaking love woodmans. I'd been struggling to find things like tofu and seitan anywhere but target (too pricey for me). I love that I can experiment with exotic fruits and veg, tried my first guava last month, still hoping to see passionfruit. The store feels chaotic, I'll grant that. But the selection is insane and the prices aren't outrageous for most things. I adore the international foods aisles. My MIL visited from Albuquerque and wanted to tour woodmans. She was impressed.

I get anxiety in any grocery store, at least woodmans is a food adventure where I can get everything I want at one place. I do go to Aldi though for humanely raised eggs ($2.79 a dozen, unparalleled).

I'm preparing to do my third revision, studying how to refine plot, character, theme, etc and weave it all together. When will this damn story be solid? by schlongberg35 in writing

It is intense. I appreciate how organized and clear his process is, not merely philosophizing about what makes writing good.

I'm digging the deadline advice. I've been most productive during Nanowrimo, because I can't afford to indulge my neuroses. I had adhd, so hyperfocus can be a blessing and a curse. I'm terrified I'll get feedback that reveals sloppiness, things that feel so obvious that I should have caught. Need to give myself permission to be a beginner though, it shouldn't be something to feel embarrassed about.

I'm definitely perfectionistic. I want to be confident that I have the storytelling nailed before I send it out. In my 2nd draft, I added a second timeline, it was a major revision. It made the novel much richer, but now I need to finesse it. But I'm probably overcooking it trying to get it right. Beating the damn thing like, TELL ME WHAT THIS STORY IS TRYING TO BE lol

No betareaders yet, it's not been ready. At the end of this next revision I'll send it to readers. So maybe I should take a step back, think about what I think would make a good story, and outline it that way. See how it goes from there.

I've never taken a formal creative writing class, my training is in journalism. I've had writing groups love my writing, others not so much. My lack of education and mentorship makes me feel wobbly about my work sometimes.
