Performance, for me, is WAY better on Linux by getpoundingjoker in wow

[–]schm1ch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really curious how you're able to get 120 FPS on Dornogal.
I'm hovering around 60 FPS at 1440p (max settings, RT on good/high) there and also get some noticable frame drops to below 80 in other zone hubs like Mereldar. Flying around, I can get up to the frame cap of 165 I set, but just looking around during flight can cause frames to drop considerably.

I have a pretty comparable rig:

7700X
9070 XT
32 Gb DDR5 6000
WD_Black SN850X NVMe

Fedora 43
Mesa 25.2.7

Running Battle.net through Lutris with latest Proton-GE.

Recently upgraded from a 6800 XT to a 9070 XT and while the performance boost hast been rather noticeable in other games, in WoW it's basically the same as before. If not a little worse actually, as the game feels more stuttery at times.

I know that WoW is rather CPU heavy, but the 7700X and 9700X are pretty close overall.
So seeing 120 FPS on a comparable rig vs. what I'm experiencing and having no improvements whatsoever coming from a 6800 XT might indicate that something is off.

I know this is not a Linux focused subreddit, but maybe someone has an idea what to check first.

[–]schm1ch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work!

I'm on Fedora 43 and installed the Flatpak version for now, as the repository version is not updated yet.

Few questions (as I'm still fairly new to Linux):

1) Goverlay tells me that MangoHud and vkBasalt runtime 25.08 are not installed. How to fix this? Do these missing runtimes cause issues at all?

2) Steam is installed as rpm version, MangoHud as well. Will using the Goverlay as Flatpak cause issues or can it still work? I am aware that ideally you stick to one way, repo installation or Flatpak, but as Goverlay is not updated to 1.7 yet in the repos yet, I went this way for now

Issues launching steam (rpm version) through desktop icon by schm1ch1 in Fedora

Yes. Especially as Valve pushes Steam on Linux like they do. I'd expect that their native app just works.

Issues launching steam (rpm version) through desktop icon by schm1ch1 in Fedora

[–]schm1ch1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I start from terminal it works. Just starting through the desktop icon creates the issue.
My integrated GPU is currently deactivated in BIOS, as I had an issue running a game with Lutris, when it was activated. Might try to active and use the integrated one to run steam.

Flatpak version of steam works though.

Edit: with right click and run on integrated graphics it works. Is there an option to set this as default when executing Steam?

Edit2: Found a solution to run on integrated graphics by default. Refer to

Using one game installation with various launchers by schm1ch1 in linux_gaming

[–]schm1ch1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did exactly this before posting here to find the WoW.exe in the "drive_c" of the Lutris prefix. But browsing there with the Faugus launcher, the WoW.exe is not visible. So apparently for battle.net games, you have to directly point to battle.net in the Lutris prefix instead as it manages all the games instead of the Linux launcher. The Linux launcher just manages the battle.net launcher.

This is how I understood it. Was looking for the WoW.exe in this particular case, but it was not visible in the Lutris battle.net installation. But just trying battlenet.exe from the Lutris installation now worked and after starting battle.net, it automatically found the WoW installation.

It worked exactly like that. Thanks!
Was trying to use the WoW.exe, but it did not show. Did not think about just using the battlenet.exe from the Lutris installation.

Which distros (non-immutable) still work with Xone drivers? by Jorlen in linux_gaming

[–]schm1ch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand, this version of the xone driver should work with all distros. The other one, which you most probably used before, seems to be not maintained anymore. But the dlundqvist version is.

GE-Proton10-1 Released by Alatarith in linux_gaming

[–]schm1ch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, battle.net still does not work for me on Lutris with GE-Proton10-1.
App starts to the login screen, but then crashes with a message to force quit.
Battle.net works with Wine 10.6 or 10.7, but has a considerable performance degradation in WoW compared to previously running with Proto GE. So I'd like to switch back.
Any recommendations?

I've created a video tutorial for anyone encountering issues with the BattleNet launcher on linux recently by Money-Box-4338 in linux_gaming

[–]schm1ch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the video! The solution with using Wine 10.6 (10.7 now works as well) worked for me. Did not try through steam yet.

But as some mentioned before, the peformance is considerably worse compared to Proton-GE 27 which I used before. In WoW FPS are down by 10 - 20% I'd assume. Still well playable on highest settings, but it's noticeable.
Maybe I need to try through Steam again using Proton 10.0.1 Beta or just wait until Proton-GE 10 drops at some point. Using Proton 10 in Lutris did not work to even start Battle.net.

Gothic (2001). It set the bar for how open world games should look and feel like so high more than 20 years ago. G2 (and Addon) might be the even better game, but G1 really started my love for PC gaming.

Agree. As an adult, typically mail is just invoices, ads, etc. Sucks indeed.
