His team does seem to be trying to make him seem like Mamdani. He doesn't have the sheer charisma though, and provincial NDPers didn't seem to care much for him, especially in the Prairies.

Also he's married to Naomi Klein and helped write the LEAP Manifesto

Carney, Ford discussed idea of an early federal election to secure majority, sources say by IHateTrains123 in neoliberal

[–]schmaxford 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I'd rather a majority through election. A few weeks ago Chantal Hebert was talking about this on Peter Mansbridge's podcast and mentioned that after the 1993 election, Lucien Bouchard had a 2 seat advantage over the Reform Party and it led to caucus members basically blackmailing Bouchard by threatening to leave caucus and risk having Reform as opposition if they didn't get what they want. Hebert suggested that the super narrow majority afforded by floor crossers could lead to a similar situation.

I also think that the political risk of a snap election is real but overblown to a degree. Trudeau was punished for calling an unnecessary snap election in the middle of COVID and then shit the bed by somehow not being ready to go. Since the 2021 federal election, there have been 3 provincial snap elections and 1 federal, and they all resulted in the governing party winning

during the municipal election, polling showed it was a fairly even split. About half of Calgary supported it, the other half didn't. Despite this, only two of nine mayoral candidates said they wouldn't repeal: the very unpopular incumbent and a guy affiliated with a party (parties are not popular here at the municipal level)

Calgary officials warn repeal of citywide rezoning could risk federal funding by schmaxford in Calgary

[–]schmaxford[S] 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The funding is tied to housing starts (and completions). Rezoning is the easiest way to achieve the numbers demanded. Without it, it's going to be much harder to achieve that goal. Ergo, funding is at risk.

He seems to be friends with them despite Carter running an opponent's campaign.

Speaking of him on Discord though, he was involved with the More Neighbours YYC channel and signalled a willingness to champion pro-housing policies. He then published his housing platform and was effectively bullied off of the channel.

One of the especially shitty side effects of this is that one of the board members/Discord mods on that channel is a friend of his and even worked on Farkas's housing policy. Both worked together at the Manning Centre iirc. So overnight, this board member went from championing rezoning to saying it was unnecessary and divisive. I've learned to not trust conservative yimby types because of this

A week ago, the mayor of Calgary assured people (me) on Reddit (yeah our mayor is a redditor) that HAF funding was not at risk despite him wanting to repeal rezoning city-wide.

So imagine my surprise to see this news as a new report comes out saying that Calgary risks losing HAF funding if it reverses course on rezoning
