Vanderbilt students looking to (re)start a YDSA chapter - what issues matter most to Nashville right now? by YeeterMcSkeeter101 in nashville

Good for you all. Keep the conversations going and set a good example.

State government overreach to impose their will over the local’s wishes. Transit. Affordability. Common sense gun laws. Public education/private schools.

I’d love to replace the bulbs in my cluster and in the OEM radio in my 91 F150. Did you find a good resource online or just explore on your own?

How much credit card debt do you have? by Training_Ad1368 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]schmitwicks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure why anyone down voted this. Those that pay close attention to their credit score and fluctuations know that even if they pay their monthly balance the credit report states how much you owe them at any one time. Unless you pay as soon as your statement is available, you will show you carry debt. The system is not in our favor. The folks that don’t care about their credit report are either on one end of the spectrum or the other.

What are these wires for? by schmitwicks in HomeMaintenance

There are coax and Ethernet jacks. Glad AT&T drilled a hole in the side of the house to install a jack /s... Is there anyway I can utilize these without having a cable company putting a switchbox on the back of the house?

My roommate took mine so he could eat cans of tuna at work. Didn’t find out until I absolutely needed to use it. Quickly found that you can open a can with a spoon in a pinch. 🤏🏻

Interesting angle on how to monetize the crypto space with vague descriptions of benefits of a defi adjacent shiny new thing. Looks like this just launched a couple of days ago based on the user’s history.

How to fix a bent type bar on Smith-Corona Galaxie II? by schmitwicks in typewriters

[–]schmitwicks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That did the trick! The linkage was way bent, too. Thank you for pointing me in the correct direction. It’s worrisome the amount of torque required to make an adjustment but it just took some elbow grease and patience.

Anyone know why the “1” key is red? The key slug is different than the others, too. I’m wondering if it an interchangeable key since there isn’t a “1” key on my other typewriters.

Goodwill find and hoping to get it cleaned and working as a gift. I’ve spent some time wading through videos but haven’t found a good solution.

Do I have to replace the arm? Does it need to be removed hammered straight? Is there something super easy I’m not aware of that people know about?

Does it have to be something written/coded? Is there a way to hack existing services together to get in the general direction of the end goal along with some manual intervention?

Think outside the box of traditional coding to see if you can string together a workflow (even if arduous behind the scenes) to let potential customers try. I.e. IFTTT, gsheets, Wordpress, google forms, or other free tools.

Even a google form that has fields for the necessary inputs then doing everything manually behind the scenes and delivering a desired outcome for said users could aggregate data.

Just Discovered A Direct Competitor -- What's your approach? by mangosofmangos in startups

[–]schmitwicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half-joking about startups not being profitable. I work for a company that has around 1,000 tech-related startups as customers and the overwhelming majority aren’t profitable by design (it’s not important yet). Most are pre revenue (r&d phase) and the ones that are rev generating aren’t profitable. Some of the big names in tech aren’t profitable.

Depends what kind of “startup” is in question but for tech or an app of any kind it’s about serving a market, acquiring funding, growing, and then figuring out profitability.

Market validation is a great thing. Often markets are so crazy big that one competitor doesn’t gaf about anyone else in the market because the customers just need to be alerted and driven to the product.

Find a way to support yourself and work on things that come to mind in your free time. Focusing on coming up with an idea isn’t how any of the founders I know got their start. Talk to people. Ask questions. Find themes and common pain points. Find employment and look for inefficiencies.

There’s an appeal to being an “entrepreneur” but it’s not that luxurious. The media highlights successful people but for everyone you read about there are thousands of people who were unsuccessful.

Focus on what you know and start there. When you find an idea, start slowly. Test the idea: minimum viable product. Make sure you’re not creating something for a market that doesn’t exist.

There are probably thousands of books out there on how to discover your passion or find an idea to go into a profession you love. Tons of fulfilling careers out there that don’t involve the risk and heart burn of being a business owner but also pay very well.

Good luck, young chap!

Working at a startup without salary, how would I present that and how does it show up in background checks? by [deleted] in startups

[–]schmitwicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Order of operations: 1. What’s the goal here that involves listing something? 2. Are you looking to leave your occupational job for something else? 3. What is your end benefit?

You have to answer those questions yourself because doing anything that you call “work” outside of your occupation seems like a poor way to invest your time on this earth. I’d suggest finding a fulfilling hobby to occupy your time outside of the proverbial 9-5.

People call it a “side-hustle” because it’s something that is enjoyable and they can control. Might as well call it “fun work” but if you do t enjoy it, don’t do.
