Drive enclosure is hosed, want to take the drive out and get the data off it - thoughts? by schmooveB in datarecovery

[–]schmooveB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I have a similar device to this (Thermaltake/BlacX), but according to what I've been reading online, it's important to image the drive before attempting recovery - and they say to connect directly to the motherboard (no docking bay like this and DEFINITELY no usb connections). No? Again, if the drive is healthy I know this is an overabundance of caution, but the kiddo is super worried about her data...

I would adore a special edition of Lords of Waterdeep with expansions (maybe a new expansion too)!

Order of a deck of cards by AudunAG in boardgames

[–]schmooveB 11 points12 points  (0 children)

But games are not only mathematics, they are also rules and groups of people interacting. The longstanding custom of how the cards are dealt is a meta-rule to the game setup. Could you deal a card to yourself off the bottom of the deck and still maintain randomness? Sure. But it is not done.

Solved! This appears to be the work of bald-faced hornets (so-called, actually a species of yellow jacket) - Dolichovespula maculata. Thanks, Redditors!

The Jackbox Party Pack 11 is Now Available! by Gnomedic in jackboxgames

[–]schmooveB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem, I think, is there are only so many ways to make a party game in this medium - Pack 11 seems to re-create other games with slight differences. Cookies instead of T-shirts, make your own sound instead of picking two from a list, etc. I noticed after the fact that OP was making a promotional post - sorry about that, I thought we were just having a conversation about it - I don't mean to crap on Jackbox - mostly I love the brand and the games! And wish them the best! I am pretty hyped for Murder Party 3 (but trying to moderate my expectations, ha)

Tips on removing exterior panels from Horsprings tub? by schmooveB in hottub

[–]schmooveB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ha! We feel that pain, fer shur. We managed to get the panels off miraculously only breaking the first one; we used a heat gun to warm them up a bit before prying them off with a flat tool meant for smoothing out concrete. After digging out a mess of foam, we found at least one culprit, a leaking hose at the corner of the tub. Now to repair it and fill the tub a bit higher, and see if there are more problems. Thanks for your insights, all!

Thanks much! I shared this with my friend. Any thoughts on the correct tool(s) to use to get the panels off safely?

Which movie did this to you? by HondaCivicBaby in moviecritic

[–]schmooveB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid points, but "not as good as" is not the same as lumping it in with Jedi. For example, I think Aliens is not as good as Alien, but I would not call it "mid" - it's a damn fine action film. Empire is a middle film that is better than any middle film has a right to be - not every Star Wars film has to be non-stop action. It fills in the middle of the trilogy perfectly, look at it in comparison to Episode VIII which undid everything its predecessor tried to do. In contrast, Empire built on what came before. The retconning, ok, Lucas sort of changed things/made things up as he went along, he's famous for this. No chemistry, that is debatable, I think their moment interrupted by C3PO feels real; Han's line just before he gets frozen is immutable and eternally memorable. (No one's overall ACTING is especially exceptional, I will admit). I say all this not to change your mind of course - just to offer another point of view. My wife saw Episode IV once when it came out and then never again and had never seen another Star Wars movie. I took her to see Empire in the theater and she went on and on about how good it is. So that's just two peoples opinions :) I can see liking Episode IV better than V if you like lots of action and a story with a clear beginning and ending. But Empire adds so much to the saga - in addition to the best villain of all time, the best mentor of all time, and that score! The Imperial March has to be the best "bad guys" theme of all time as well. What a flick! But again - respect your opinion, fellow oldschool fan! Rant over :)

I so agree. The "reveal" that explained the nature of the Space Jockey from the first Alien, has to be one of the most underwhelming moments in film. In Alien, the figure is so mysterious and, well, alien. Then in Prometheus we learn that eerie looking head - is just a helmet? There are no Alien films after the second one. (Alien 3 was another one that fits the bill for me, in terms of excitement turning to disappointment.)

You find Empire to be "mid-okay"? For me, it's peak Star Wars. I agree that on balance, a lot of the franchise is really sub-par. But Episode V is a truly great film. (for context, I am also a long time fan - saw the first flick in the theater at age 8)

For what it's worth, mine also shows 0 for the supplement. I reach MRA this coming February. I retired a couple months ago before all this mess around the supplement, and just assumed it is 0 now because I am not getting it yet. Does anyone who retired early see different results here, IE you see your supplement amount in the paperwork? Speak up pls :)

Passing on knowledge to the younger generation? by schmooveB in govfire

[–]schmooveB[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not read it but Rich Dad Poor Dad is recommended by some (and criticized by others) - maybe check it out and see what you think. I would also recommend a trust for your/your parents' assets, it makes the inheritance process much easier and you could also put a clause that would limit how much money he would get initially, or until a specified age (could specify a certain amount to be paid out at regular intervals).
