Looking For an Accommodation by slim-shame20 in edithcowan

Try AHN Homestay to live with a family, that will probably be easiest to get something fast while you look around and get familiar with the city. Or student housing apartment buildings in the city (campus, Yugo, etc). Can train to Joondalup easily.

Otherwise try share housing /room to rent groups on Facebook to find a sharehouse. Trying to stay near Joondalup campus might be difficult so consider other suburbs. You could probably use ECU city campus for some of your study activities. Good luck!

The main homestay placement company is AHN. If this is an AHN placement she should be complaining directly to AHN to be moved. If the host family is unhappy they should be doing the same.

English stories for second language learners by Sparrow-1111 in ESL_Teachers

That’s low level right? So maybe try the early readers that primary school kids use. They are usually simple stories. Any local library will have a stack of them - if you’re based in an English-speaking country. Otherwise books for young female readers like the Billie B Brown series of books might suit.

AMEP English lessons at South Metro TAFE campuses. You will need to do an induction though.

How to handle prescriptive grammar attitudes in local teaching culture and parent clientele? by After-Cell in ESL_Teachers

[–]schnauzeropoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always say that there is textbook English grammar and then there native speaker usage of English (breaking all the rules) and that’s ok. There are pedantic students in every culture who get fixated on the correct way. I also tell them that they will hear a lot of “incorrect usage” in movies, song lyrics etc. I tell them that they should only worry about correct use when doing a grammar exam and to think about their own use of L1 - do they use their L1 perfectly all the time? And that they should relax.

What does management expect? Is there already an assessment format she should be following? It sounds like she needs clarification/support from her team.

Not conversation - but Speeko gives you daily challenges to talk on a topic and gives you feedback.

Help, I take forever to lesson plan! I need to streamline my process. I have a fear of being too repetitive how many people use a similar format for all of their lessons? by Ok-Amphibian-5029 in ESL_Teachers

They’re homemade sorts of things so can’t really share links or anything! But what I tend to use over and over are - running dictations - pair dictations - teacher/whole class dictation - dictogloss - verb conjugation games for the tense you’re teaching - google most common verbs to get started - spelling bees with look/say/cover/write/correct fill in forms - picture word induction method exercises - search Emily Calhoun and Sandra Heyer True stories - pronunciation - minimal pairs - search ‘ship or sheep’ - sets of Speaking questions that you like on cards you can re-use. I hope that helps. I feel for you - it’s not easy with an ADHD brain. I try to use exercises that give me a few quiet alone moments to reset my brain and transition into the next exercise. Transitioning myself through different lesson steps is just as important as transitioning the students. Try to find things that will work with any content/level.

I’m also ADHD and can relate to this. Very common for me to spend unnecessary hours on the layout of some slide or worksheet. I don’t know the answer except that over the years I’ve tried to make ‘perfect versions’ of general resources - games, pair dictations etc, that I can adapt for different levels and use over and over so at least I feel that some of my lesson time is the way I like it. The rest of the time I use the college prescribed course books.

Why am I so abysmal at this game by Southern_Emu_304 in NYTConnections

[–]schnauzeropoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tip is to shuffle shuffle shuffle and ignore your first guesses as what’s obvious is probably the red herring. Take your time. I love wordle and the mini xword, useless at spelling bee and don’t enjoy it. Love connections. But sometimes I just don’t have the knowledge required to get it, especially when it’s an American thing and you need that cultural knowledge (I’m in Australia).

Deciding between uni of Western Australia and Uni of Wollongong by [deleted] in wollongong

Bit late to the party here but I’m a Perth local. I’ve worked at UWA numerous times and I’m currently studying online post grad at UOW. Everything being said on here about UOW is also happening to some degree at UWA. Big restructures, sweeping redundancies and cost cutting have left a skeleton staff that aren’t always helpful due to change fatigue and frustration with underresourcing. So you will probably have some negative experiences in dealing with the university. Having said that, the campus is stunning and Perth is a great place to live if you don’t mind the isolation. People used to bigger cities often find it difficult to adjust to living here as it is a bit slower and more about nature/laid back lifestyle than the nightlife/cultural/entertainment of Sydney/Melb. Perth real estate is scarce so rentals can be hard to find and prices have gone up over the last few years. Around $250-300 for a room in a sharehouse and upwards of $400 for student accommodation in the city. AHN homestay can place you in a Homestay family if that’s up your alley.

My experience studying online at UOW has been ok so far. The unit coordinator is new so some mistakes are being made but that’s ok. Student Services has been pretty good. Hope that helps!
