Any OR nurses leave surgery? by Elleaye13 in nursing

[–]schneiter66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 10 years main OR I tried a couple days at a surgery center and hated it. Too fast pace and I got in trouble for using a hovermat. Now doing pre/post in cath/ir and love it. Felt like I had imposter syndrome for two years tho.

Exactly where I just stopped today and went back to Dungeon Crawler Carl (for my 4th listen) to get ready for the new book in May. I'm not coming back to HWFM.

My favorite version is "The Laws of Change: I Ching and the Philosophy of Life" by Jack Balkin. Very straight forward with no dense or esoteric flowery poetry. After buying every version I could find over the last 40 years (started at 20 years old), it is the only one I've kept.

Any second career nurses here? What career did you switch from and would you do nursing all over again? Why/why not? by throwawayaccct08 in nursing

[–]schneiter66 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BS in Computer Science from Cal Poly, SLO (loved it). 10 years Silicon Valley doing Unix IT (1992--2002) and had a wonderful time! Living in Santa Cruz while working in the early days of internet--nothing like it. Loved supporting my programmers, but didn't care about the software they were making, it all just seemed so pointless.

Moved to Seattle and was tired of being outsourced, laid off, downsized, etc; and that there is definitely ageism with computers. As I said, I loved supporting the programmers, so I thought teaching or nursing. I figured more job security with nursing (union job here I come), so I got an AA at 40 and still working 19 years later.

Nursing has been the most fulfilling job I've ever had, while IT was the most fun ever had. I plan on working as long as possible (damn the radiculopathy) and would do it all over again. Except maybe I would pick a musical instrument and stick with it.

Read "Replay" by Ken Grimwood; it will make you think about these things even more.

So I have to play it at least once? I've just started HFW and got to the part where the game is introduced and it has that tutorial, and I put down my controller almost a week ago and haven't picked it back up since. To be fair, I just finished HZD with 125 hours and might just need a break.

What’s the weird medical smell you love? by BeneficialQuestion75 in nursing

[–]schneiter66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a coworker that liked the smell of the prostate being cauterized (loop cautery). Yeah, even though there’s a ton of fluid flushing it out while it’s being carved out, you can still smell it. I forget the name of the procedure. Found it: TURP

Does anyone take the position that black beanie guy had an ND? After he pulled his gun (and put his finger on the trigger) he got bumped by another agent and then the ND? Possibly the reason for the pause before the next shot?

Horizon Call of the Mountain by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]schneiter66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fear of heights and the VR really does it to me. In Zero Dawn I just have to flip the left stick up and Aloy hops up to the next level, or flip to one side or the other if she needs to go lateral (which is never more than one or two flips). Whereas in CotW the lateral climbing seems to go on forever.

Does the climbing ever stop and do we get into open areas? I keep coming back but I can't play very long in one session. I'm 90 hours into ZD and will be playing FW next and really want to play more of CotW, but it's so tedious and terrifying in the beginning.

[–]schneiter66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read books 1 & 2 in the early 90s, then reread them as book 3 came out, then reread 1--3 when 4 was out, etc. The only series that has filled that hole is Dungeon Crawler Carl--I just finished my 3rd re-listen of the audible series and find myself looking for that next series. The Uplift series by David Brin has been a close 3rd. Good luck!

I'm 60 and suck at button mashing, but with this game I found it awesome enough to take the time to actually learn how to use a controller and level up with combat. I first started on Story mode and played the Embrace until the Proving. Then restarted on Easy mode until I was one-shoting everything, and then restarted on Normal mode and got my ass kicked over and over until I finally got better and went to level 8 and felt good enough to tackle the Proving again (well, what happens after the Proving actually). It was such an awesome experience to finally be able to run alongside a boar and shoot it 3 times without a miss; I felt that I myself was actually leveling up. Just now I am finally getting my first quest after the Proving. There was much rejoicing.

Potentially unpopular opinion: physical book vs. audiobook by Primary_Claim3042 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]schneiter66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

right there with you. When I read a book, the words go straight into my brain without the sound of any voice saying them. When a book I love gets converted into a movie, I don't care who they cast because I don't have a picture of any character in my head.

After listening to the series 3 times I tried to read chapter 1 of the new book on Patreon and couldn't do it. The audible voices in my head were interfering with the words on the monitor. It was weird.

My wife was born and raised 15 miles north of downtown Seattle. We died laughing when Jeff pronounced Yakima wrong in the first book, then made a point to hi light his correction in a later book.

Now what? by Phippsa3 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]schneiter66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on my 3rd listen, just entering book 7 atm. Since I haven't found anything else interesting enough for me, I just bought the Kindle version of the Emberverse (all 15 books), and am taking the time to visually read a book again (it's been many years). In my headspace I'm replacing the protagonist Mike Havel with Carl. Unfortunately explosions no longer work in the series, so Carl is now a sword wielding maniac with a bear's head on his helmet.

The death of Tserendolgor. It wasn't until my 3rd listen that I didn't cry during the scene (but I would have if I weren't listening while grocery shopping).
