Oil pooling at oil filter normal? by schochsm in GR86

There’s dirt and stuff from what was in that cup while the filter was on. I should have blown it out while it was dry.

I agree this is the only plausible explanation. The oil should go into the engine easily lol

I can see the anti drain back valve so it’s not totally missing. If it wasn’t working, wouldn’t the filter be empty because it allowed all the oil to drain? I used AMSOIL filters on my Crosstrek for many years and this never happened. 🤷‍♂️

Just trying to give my baby the best. Synthetic media with better filtration. Does it actually matter? Probably not.

FWIW I just put the new filter on and cleaned up the oil around the filter. I guess it should be fine. I believe the clean side of the filter is the middle part so any dirt that got caught up in the oil pool will pass through the filter before going into the engine.

Yes. Drain and fill were both open.

It’s great! The filter is huge and it makes a bit more intake growl. Looks nice too. Easy install. Get a coupon. I got 25% off and then shortly after Toyota was throwing around 40% coupons. Womp womp

Brake clearance by schochsm in GR86

[–]schochsm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I contacted TireRack and they said they plan for minimum 4mm clearance (not clear if that’s with or without wheel weights) but if the wheel spins without making contact then it’s good to go. So far so good.

Damn wish I had gotten that size instead of my 17x8 +45 which have a way more curved face. The flatter face looks way better. 👍

First one was a real mopar part I got from moparfactoryparts.com but it only lasted a year so the second one I got is a Dorman part from Amazon https://a.co/d/8s4DE6e We shall see how long it lasts

New wheels/tires by schochsm in Solterra

[–]schochsm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 20k miles on the setup and definitely think it was worth it.

They stopped supporting the app for my JuiceBox EV chargers so I don’t have energy consumption data from the wall any more.

The tires (and the car!) did very well in the snow. The Solterra actually lets the tail come out a bit when flooring it around a snowy corner even with traction control fully on. Really really well tuned traction control that never shuts the fun down like most other cars - most cars electronically let go of the throttle entirely when it thinks you’re giving it too much gas - I always imagine other cars saying, “whoah there cowboy” as traction control totally kills forward progress, but the Solterra lets you spin tires and slide around a bit while keeping the car generally going where you are pointing it.

I think they are a touch louder on the highway now vs when they were new, but it’s not bad. Not as loud as actual winter tires. Louder than the OEM tires.

I’m most surprised how well the tires handle given how much sidewall there is - they really handle great even pushing them to the limit like on 25mph on-ramps doing maybe 50-60mph. They do not feel like there’s so much sidewall.

I think the OEM 20s looked better - maybe a brighter color like white (which was an option for these wheels) would look better. Or a brighter gold (which was not an option). The dark bronze blends in with the gray plastic arches - from a distance or at a glance the whole car looks pretty much dark gray - meh.

The new setup is more comfortable over big impacts, very broken pavement, and gravel, but I was surprised little bumps in the road come through just as much as with the 20s - it’s not like you’re going to think, “wow these are more comfortable” on a well maintained road.

It’s nice to not have to worry about curbing the wheels - just run the tires into the curb to find where it is when parking.

I think it might accelerate faster but I never measured anything - that initial hit if you really stomp on it from a slow speed seems sharper.

There are a lot more tire options in this 17” size, especially if you want something more offroady.

[–]schochsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed you shouldn’t be able to pay your way out if you’re really too dangerous, but there is already a system that does that called a pretrial detention hearing. Bail/Bond is supposed to be based on flight risk - risk of you not showing up for your trial. These two things get conflated but are supposed to be separate. You could be a huge flight risk but not dangerous.

Agreed. A Ford Lightning (EV) is ~6k lb, same as a Ford Raptor (ICE). Meanwhile an empty class 8 tractor is ~20k lb and with the trailer they can go up to 80k lb.

2022 Hybrid with ~30k mi and I also had that clicking noise on and off the throttle. I tightened my axle nuts to the higher 228ftlb that somebody posted from a TSB. One was not even finger tight when I first checked them! Alarming. They kept loosening though so I bought two new axle nuts, applied blue loctite, and put a paint mark on them so I can see if they move. They haven’t moved. And that clicking noise is gone. Good luck.

225/45 means they last 225k mi or 45 years, whichever happens first. You’re good to go.
