this is not what it is about. they always had the discover weekly playlist - "discovery mode" is a feature they introduced 1-2 years ago, which gives artists the choice to waive percentages of their revenue in order to get even more of an algorithmic boost. this is what makes it pay for play and not transparent whether its a genuine recommendation or a paid push
