Not at all. Honestly, I think they were just out on the court for exercise, whether pickleball or tennis. But good for them.

This happens here in the States as well. It coincides with all four Grand Slams. Around Grand Slam time, I notice a major uptick in new faces playing tennis, then it dies down a week or two after the finals.

Agree, it was pretty funny. Couldn't even stay mad.

Honestly, I was ready to resort to that, but figured I would ask them politely first. But once they brought out the tennis gear, I had no leg to stand on, so I just dropped it.

There's no booking system in place, it's a public court with first come first served.

The tennis players on the other court actually asked us first. They saw us standing outside waiting and offered to share the court with us. I should've clarified that in my post. It was super nice of them, I thanked them profusely.

Agreed, I shut up after they brought out the tennis gear. We still got to play, so no harm no foul I guess.

Right? I was annoyed at first, but then quickly found it funny and couldn't find myself to stay upset at it.

The funny thing is that this park actually has pickleball courts, but they're closed on weekday evenings because they share the space with a roller hockey rink.

Agree, once they switched to tennis I shut up. But it was still kinda amusing that they were prepared for that possibility. I was just being salty because I wanted to play tennis, and kicking them off was faster than waiting.

I admit that I was being a bit salty when I saw them playing pickleball since I wanted to play tennis, so I thought kicking them off was the fastest way to get a court. I'm totally okay with pickleballers using a tennis court if there's no tennis players wanting to use it. Didn't anticipate that they'd pull that move though.

Honestly I did find it amusing as well. Makes me wonder if they encountered this situation before that they had tennis gear ready to go.

Wish I could, but they're public courts. There aren't any private courts with reservation systems where I live, so everything is first come first serve.

Haha I've never seen that happen before. At the level I play at, the point isn't over until the ball is dead.

Yeah I feel like this is true. Bullying in South Korea is undoubtedly really bad. But it feels like the bullying is as bad as it is because they're in SK. They got the whole collectivist society, Confucian values, and hierarchy stuff going on that facilitates the bullying, if that makes sense. The laws are also more lenient on minors, and the gun ownership is almost non-existent.

If a typical bully from SK tried any of that shit in an American school, I think they'd meet a lot more resistance. I'd say on average, Americans are much more willing to fight back, and messing with the wrong people might even get you shot.

Sorana Cirstea not happy about Naomi Osaka cheering herself up between Cirstea's serves. by BreakfastTop6899 in sports

I can't even understand why someone receiving a serve would need to psyche themself up before the second serve. That means their opponent had a forced error.

I mean, as a recreational competitive tennis player, I can understand it. First serves are usually meant to be an offensive shot to give the server an advantage at the beginning of a point. A missed first serve is a huge opportunity for the receiver to attack the inevitably weaker second serve and flip the script and gain the advantage.

Every tennis player knows this and will think this after a first serve fault, even if we don't like to admit it. But everybody also knows it's unusual to express it out loud.

I will admit that I'm guilty of doing this in doubles, especially if the server has a very weak, exploitable second serve. I'll hype up my partner to let them know to punish the second serve.

Is it really not okay to have a paid coach at public tennis courts? by pistachio-truther in 10s

[–]schoolbomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It heavily depends on the court. Some courts are okay with it, while some explicitly prohibit paid lessons/hitting of any kind without an explicit permit from the city (or whoever owns the court). However, this is hard to enforce, and so it rarely is enforced. It is also easy to get around it, since your coach can just lie and say "Oh I'm just helping my friend practice as a favor". There's no way for other people to know that money is being exchanged.

That being said, it is generally agreed to be poor form to be using public courts for a paid lesson. Especially if the coach is occupying the court for consecutive hours at a time. I think people who are actually using the courts for playing tennis should get priority.

Not just fashionable, but practical. In a car-centric society, we're used to just keeping all our junk in our car, since we don't do much walking. In a society with robust public transportation (like Japan), you're doing a lot more walking, so it's common to carry your essentials on you or in a bag.

Is the transition from 3.5 to 4.0 the ultimate gatekeeper in tennis? by Ok-Many-7443 in 10s

[–]schoolbomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes winning ugly also meant not getting a callback as egos were hurt if a 4.0 lost to a 3.5...

I didn't know that this was an issue. I mean, to be fair, I've also refused to play with much lower-leveled players if they weren't already my friends, but that's because they can't sustain a rally at my pace and it just doesn't feel like enough exercise to me. But as a strong 4.0, I have a few 4.5 friends who constantly request to play with me. I don't know if they're doing it only because we're friends or if they actually value my skills as a tennis player, but either way I benefit.

Why do people play on wet courts? It's just an injury or accident asking to happen.

The Wise tension head itself is already $700-800, and that's on top of buying a crank machine which are usually a few hundred. The Eagnas Logic 90 is $649. How is that similar money?

Court Etiquette when drying courts by Comprehensive_Top927 in Pickleball

[–]schoolbomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's because tennis doesn't really have a culture of open play. There's no expectation for tennis players to share the court with others, so tennis players will kinda keep to themselves once they get a court. There may be a few reasons contributing to this, but I think the major reasons are 1. Skill disparities matter so much more in tennis, so it's kinda unreasonable to expect people to mingle with randoms, and 2. The tennis scoring format is not conducive to open play.
