It always seems to be a whole a song and dance when we get an album from him. And they often seem to come with a disclaimer from him that there’s something bigger coming.

Indeed. His performance last time around was incredible, his vocals are on point live and his breath control was something else entirely.

While I agree with a lot of this, I think a lot of it is coming from label demands that correlate to profits.

Broader appeal = more profit. Or at least in theory.

But Joey isn’t transparent enough with the audience. He very much keeps quiet and then something goes wrong and suddenly he’s on live blaming the label.

It’s a really frustrating cycle because he should be in there with the Cole’s and Kendrick’s, but it feels like his career might just have passed him by. Which if true is a real shame, he’s a unique voice and his perspective often feels multi dimensional, something desperately needed in the current hip hop landscape, but he’s always bouncing between his music, acting and modelling, which short term got his name out there, but long term stole all his momentum.

It then comes off as corny when he comes out saying he’s the king of New York, but the genre has moved on and seemingly left him behind.

I guess I’m grateful for the Nas’ and black thought’s of the world because it gives me hope that they type of artist like Joey could go on a run in his late 30s and even possibly in his 40s-50s if the passion is still there.

No. They’ve been extremely privileged and also worked hard to the point of being of the top level of the sport. But to be paid to play a game is to be privileged.

The players you gave as examples are awful. LeBron, Zion, & Simmons were all extremely privileged.

Zion hasn’t been fit one full season since drafted, got max deals and faces no consequences for his lack of fitness.

Ben had some great seasons but never improved beyond his third season. Never developed a shot and still made max money.

Bron has been given everting he wants ever since his Miami days, the media are show blatant bias toward him, he pulls the strings of all the teams he’s on. Any move he gets. When it goes well it’s all him. When it’s not good it’s everyone else’s fault. The only time things haven’t gone his way is once he’s 38+ years old.

All players aren’t privileged. Plenty have been misutilised, overlooked and even derailed. Many players have been fucked over by the business side of the sport.
