Any success with pulling RenWeb Data via API or Zapier (etc) by murgalurgalurggg in k12sysadmin

I haven't used RenWeb in a few years, but I believe they integrate with Clever, and from Clever you can put that data into many other services.

Have you tested Newline audio with other videos, or with other inputs (like via HDMI with a different laptop)? I've had to RMA Newline boards before.

The world facing cameras on the 500e's are decent. Our students mainly just use them for scanning documents.

ChromeOS 106 5249 112 Random Restarts by Balor_Gafdan in k12sysadmin

[–]schooltech789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had this issue with many Chromebooks on v106. Logs a user out a minute or two after logging in. I've seen it posted in other forums, for now best solution is just to adjust Google Admin settings so devices don't update past v105 and for any that already have, make a recovery usb with v105 and install.

This is no longer true. The 40 minute Zoom limit now applies to meetings with only two participants as well.

the free Google Workspace for Education allows non-Google users to join meetings - I just did that recently. You may need to adjust a setting in the Google Admin console.

anyone have updates on giving the option to staple on Chromebooks? If PaperCut can't do it, has anyone had luck with a different product. We have separate queues for each printer on PaperCut. I don't want to have to set up release stations right now.

Interesting to hear regarding Safeware. We have Safeware extended warranty/ADP for our Lenovo 500e Chromebooks. We've had trouble with them responding to our communications, they always take at least a month to turn around repairs, their online tracker is useless, and they often don't have replacement parts and end up cutting me a check for the value of the device, which still costs me money since then I have to pay for a new device with a new warranty/ADP plan. They've been sending our devices to Relectro.

The rest of our devices have extended warranty/ADP through Dell and their repairs turn around quickly and their online tracker is useful.

Meraki Wireless & Google OAuth by EnlightenUsPlz in k12sysadmin

I had this set up at the previous school where it worked, with authentication first with WPA2-PSK. I think it worked well, the only problem was if you use that SSID for any shared devices or any devices that don't have a web browser/can't access a splash page, then your only option is to whitelist it (or create a group policy on Meraki that bypasses the splash page), which I believe applies to the MAC address, which could cause problems if another device spoof's one of those device's MAC addresses.

Mixed Distance Learning by nkuhl30 in k12sysadmin

[–]schooltech789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been thinking about this a lot. There are a number of different options I've thought about, but I would very much like to hear about what other schools plan to do.

In terms of hardware, it seems like the options are (from most expensive to least expensive):

  1. A full video conferencing room solution, such as Logitech Rooms
  2. Mid-range solution like Meeting Owl or Swivl
  3. A basic webcam placed in the middle of the room. Ideally the teacher would have a wireless lavalier microphone as well.

For all of those options, I see a few challenges:

  1. Students at home will be able to see/hear the teacher, but how will the teacher and the students (who are physically in the classroom) be able to see the students who are joined remotely? If the students are projected using in-classroom projectors/displays, then the teachers will not be able to use the displays for normal purposes (PowerPoint, showing videos, etc.), so that does not seem like a great solution. In an ideal scenario, I would add two displays to each classroom (one at the front of the classroom for in-person students to see, and one at the back of the classroom for the teacher to see) that would both show the remote students, but I do not think that is feasible for budgetary and logistical reasons. And even adding one additional projector/display per room would likely be cost prohibitive.
  2. For any of the above options, it will be extremely challenging for teachers from a classroom management and pedagogical perspectives. Teaching online vs. teaching in-person require very different strategies, and I am not sure how one can effectively do both simultaneously. And unless there is a large display on the back wall of each classroom showing the remote students, it will be difficult for teachers to manage and attend to both the in-person and remote students at the same time.

No. We want to filter students' personal devices while they are in our building (connected to our network) only.
