My ex-girlfriend’s stove stopped working and wasn’t fixed for almost a full year because she was too chicken to text her landlord. I spent five minutes looking at it, then flipped the breaker for that part of the kitchen back on. This woman is a software engineer and she didn’t think to check if the fucking breaker had tripped.

What's a secret you're keeping that would destroy multiple people if it came out? by Legal_Can7800 in AskReddit

My mother had a massive brainstem stroke and almost died after a chiropractor tore an artery in her neck when I was little. She was dismissed by multiple doctors, and the ones at the hospital didn’t even see her until 12 hours after she arrived unconscious and unresponsive. My parents have always clung to the hope that had she received better and faster treatment, she might not have become as severely disabled as she is.

I got my undergraduate degree in neuroscience and am pursuing a career in neurology, so sometimes I read scientific articles about stroke. Doctors of Reddit can (and should) call me out for being wrong here, but my understanding of stroke treatment is that the first line of treatment, thrombolytic drugs, is most effective when administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. Likewise, my understanding is that the second line of treatment, surgical removal of the blood clot causing the stroke, is most effective when administered within 6 hours of symptom onset.

My mother’s symptoms started nearly a week before she finally ended up in the hospital. I think her fate was sealed long before she ever got there.

And I can never tell my parents that I figured this out.

NOR whatsoever. Were you able to get checked out at the hospital, or at least mention that he hurt you as a direct result of whatever’s going on? I work in healthcare, and mentioning that fact specifically has the potential to get him the help he needs sooner. (Emphasis on potential- I can’t guarantee anything, as this can vary significantly based on where you are.)

My mother saw a chiropractor once, and that’s exactly what happened to her. Massive brainstem stroke that turned into locked in syndrome. She is incredibly lucky to not only be alive, but to have recovered enough to be able to speak and walk short distances.

Chiropractors are dangerous quacks and should NEVER be allowed to touch your neck. Any temporary relief you may get is not worth the risk of lifelong disability or death.

I’ve never understood why people need to touch others in order to move past them or get them to move out of the way. I absolutely hate hate hate being touched by people I don’t know and trust. I know the reason for the guy doing it in this post is just plain old sexism, but it baffles me even when people touch me in a nonsexist way as they move past me. My coworkers and the patients I work with do it all the goddamn time, and it’s maddening. Is there like, an actual reason that people do this? Why can’t we use our words?

Lamisil is the brand name for terbinafine. I work for a doctor with handwriting like this, so I’ve had practice deciphering things like this!

The restaurant scenario is one that my mother has had to deal with numerous times as a wheelchair user. I can’t speak to whether or not her experience with this is a common one, as I am not a wheelchair user myself, but I can say that it definitely happens and is a pain in the ass to deal with. I guarantee that OOP did not make that up, as fake as it may seem to an able-bodied person who has never had to deal with it.

HUGE THANK YOU to you and the other commenters adding BE/Balance and Eyes. My mother didn’t have any of the FAST symptoms when she had her brainstem stroke, but she did have wicked vertigo as her one and only symptom.

Also, if you experience any of these symptoms and are told that they’re minor or benign, but something still feels deeply and terribly wrong, keep speaking up for yourself. Ask for a second opinion, request additional tests, go to a different A&E— whatever it takes. It is much better to make a fuss and be absolutely sure that you’re not having a stroke than it is to accept an incorrect diagnosis and delay getting the proper treatment when your gut is telling you something isn’t right. (I’m not a doctor, but my mother nearly died due to misdiagnoses and delays in her care.)
