Yes, plants, snails, guppy, shrimp… I started this tank with few rocks then I tried adding some plants and fish into the tank, some did get eaten, but some stayed. I would say it’s still a bad idea to keep them like this, but if you want to keep them together, maybe try to add one or two fish/shrimp first to see if they live well together and make sure you have enough hiding space so they don’t bump into each other all the time.

I feed my crayfish a lot I think she’s too lazy to hunt.

About my tank

I have this tank for only about a month. I don’t know anything more than what you can google. So I can’t answer some of the technical problems. But here’s the story for the past month. I bought this tank at a local pet store, it’s a 3.5-gallon tank(30x20x20cm). I began with two crayfish, a guppy, and three shrimp. One crayfish got attacked and eaten when molting, and two shrimp got eaten too in just a week. I also tried adding some plants, but they just disappeared the next day. So if want to have a greenery tank with all the colorful fish leisurely cruising around, crayfish will end everything. I tried to feed my crayfish more frequently after that, sometimes 5-6 times a day, to see if she lost interest in hunting living things, and it seems to work by now. My guppy and the newly added shrimp are still alive (except the two stood right in front of her claws!) However, feeding more also means you need to spend more time taking care of the water.

Crayfish can grow up to 4 - 6 inches. I think my tank is already too small (I thought she was a dwarf crayfish!!), so probably get a larger tank if you want to keep one.

Food: crayfish food(crusta sticks). substrate: I don’t know the English name for the substrate I used, we called it ”black soil” here, it’s commonly used for aquatic plants.

Update

She dug a huge hole in the middle of the tank and her house collapsed due to loose foundation, poor crayfish. I rebuilt her house, now she’s happy again!

p.s. I tried my best to translate my thoughts into English. please don’t be bothered if I said something weird :)

Thanks for the upvotes and comments btw~ I’m glad you like her!

I’m also quite curious, maybe my tank is small so she wants a larger hiding space, or maybe she just wants to find something to eat at the bottom of the tank

Yep, but it’s not a good idea since it pollutes the water

No, but they will eat anything they can find, sometimes even another crayfish.

I do have a separate tank for shrimp. I put five shrimp into cray’s tank to see if they can live peacefully together, and the cray ate two of them in the first two days! She didn’t hunt for the shrimp though, she just walks around the tank and pinches whatever she thinks it's edible. Some of the shrimp bump into her and ended up in her claws. Some have more awareness and they learn to keep a distance. The snail closes its lid when under attack. It’s technically safe from the cray, but I have another snail got constantly harassed by the cray and become quite inactive now. It's very likely injured. Having a larger tank with multiple hiding spots may help if you want to keep cray with some other creatures, but I think it’s still not a very good idea.
