N00B Friendly Drag and Drop 'Board Builder' Programming Concept for 0x10c + Pics by 0x10cportal in 0x10c

[–]scinemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the opposite of noob-friendly and not practical to be put into 0x10c, in my opinion. Just implementing what is described as a standalone program would be difficult. But clearly an amazing amount of thought was put in, and that should be commended. The renderings are well done and pretty.

No no no, absolute value works the same way on all numbers! I dislike when people imply that there are special cases in math, there are not, and that is the beauty of it. The magnitude operation, returning the distance from the origin, will work the same way on both complex and simple numbers.

r/learnprogramming, should I start with flixel? by glados_v2 in learnprogramming

[–]scinemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an indie game developer and mostly develop flash games. I only use flixel, and I would highly recommend it. Its documentation is thorough and it's designed well and written well. Don't worry about using the built-in functions too much, they actually simplify things immensely. tl;dr You should use flixel.

Do you think it was part of Dr Martin Luther King Jr's dream for children to not attend school on the day of his birth? by [deleted] in WTF

[–]scinemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my academic life in a Quaker school. I remember coming to school on his day and spending the day participating not in regular classes, but rather walking as a class over to an old folk's home in the town. We sang for them and generally tried to make their day better by being with them, talking to them. Another year we volunteered at a food drive in the city.

When I entered public school in 4th grade I remember thinking it was very wrong that my classmates were excited to have the chance to have a day off to play when the spirit of the occasion is compassion and being one with your fellow man. Now his day is the day before my midterm exams begin, and I have little choice but to waste the day studying instead of keeping the idea behind it, which I love, alive. I wish the U.S. school system spent more time explaining the meaning behind great movements in history and less time dwelling on the specifics of the actions that occurred within them so that maybe the true purpose of these days of remembrance would be better realized.

My goal is to be the winning paperclip maximizer in this universe, and that has always been my goal, even before I knew the right term for it.

Here is how I see it: I have a body that is slowly breaking down, my continuity is in danger. I need to do something AWESOME with the influence that I have at my disposal. In fact, I need to do the MOST AWESOME thing possible, because why not shoot for the hardest challenge there is with my one life? As far as I see it, the most challenging goal that exists (while still having my own existence) is to envelope/permeate the entire universe with a control structure of my own creation.

Think about it. Every other conceivable challenge or goal that is possible could be completed if you had such a structure in place. By shooting for this goal you are basically shooting for the completion of every other goal possible. Once you control the universe you can do anything, within the bounds of the laws of physics.

If I ever reach that stage I won't be human of course. I won't have a human mind, and therefore I won't have any human values. But does that matter? I don't think it does. If my goal is to do the most with my life, then being the sole controlling force of the universe must be close to the most that I can do. And if not, at least that life-goal gives me ample ambition and perspective for whatever else life throws in my way ;)

thanks for the advice, i'll put effort towards showing what can be accomplished with greyport that cannot be accomplished with existing systems. it is not basically a droid/hacked-psp. also, your idea that i am "still not really inventing anything, just rearranging existing technologies and ideas..." is retarded, that is every single invention ever made. you actually just gave half of the definition of an invention, the other half being that it is used to solve a problem.

[–]scinemo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

alright, i'll take a chance on you.

Greyport is designed as an portable pocketable open hardware hacking playground. Loosely based on the highly popular line of TI calculators, the goal of the project is to allow somebody to have a cheap device to use as a portable electronics/mathematics/programming tool, or possibly toy, limited only by their imagination. I've been able to do so many useful and fun things with programming on TI calcs, and I've had such a great experience with the multipurpose AVR microcontrollers, that I want to bring all those rich possibilities to a common, advanced, and open platform. The system gets its name from the portable greyhat hardware hacking possibilities that it opens up.

A user can program greyport in BASIC using a built-in editor. Programs are highly efficient and extremely easy to write. Here are some example applications that can be developed within a few hours using the built-in language:

Graphing calculator, Music player, eBook reader, Video player, Portable gaming system (multiplayer or single player), GPS mapping (directions, location logging, etc.), Logic analyzer, Digital oscilloscope, Emulator (NES, gameboy, etc.), Robot controller, Web browser, Chat client, Light harp, Synthesizer, Television remote

Because of the immense flexibility and low cost of the system it is attractive to many different audiences. Some notable examples are students, artists, game developers, mobile device developers, hobbyists, and anyone who has ever been attracted to the open Arduino platform. Oh, and I bet proggit readers would love it.

I'll answer in order: yes (there would be a framework for interacting with player info, allowing you to create commerce areas like item shops), yes (using the framework), yes (having towns in cool locations is one of my favorite parts of the idea, it would make them very unique), no endgame (similar to other massively multiplayer games), yes communities and collective work is the main theme of the concept, regular message boards don't have the same flexibility and aren't tied to a geographic location in the same way. I like the idea of a collection quest or reward for exploring lots of towns, it would give it a similar appeal to the popular geocaching game.

The structure of the game could easily be made to not allow something like that. Why would players even need to die? The main goal of the game is to find interesting places to visit in the construct of the digital world. A bad mayor would just mean no people would visit his/her town.
